Just for the sake of playing devil’s advocate – even if they showed a bar representing who was winning at the time, there would still be no way to prove that it wasn’t rigged (ie. that they just decided who should have what % of support at what time, and not using the players votes still).
The point is, if they really want to rig the election, having a bar showing who’s winning at the time will not make it any easier to notice. That said, it would be pretty stupid and pointless of them to rig the election in such a way. Why would they want to alienate the majority of the playerbase by rigging the election?
Before anyone brings up the key discounts, I’m going to point out that they can have a discount for them for whatever reason they want – they wouldn’t need to jump through the pointless hoops of having a rigged election.
This is never a good idea in elections. They never give you a rolling count while balloting is in process.
Exit polling is a common practice in (at least US) politics at this point, which normally gives an accurate representation. Election results are often ‘known’ before the actual voting or at least only part of the way through the voting.
Reality aside, I sort of expected to be able to see rolling counts (or %s) in game from ANET, to help spur on people to farm more for their candidate if it is looking like a close race or otherwise. I was actually surprised by the amount of forum discussion on the election, and would have expected this sort of voting feedback to the player base to only spur it on
The use of Exit Polling and media “projections” of results should NOT be a common practice and should be made illegal. While it’s nearly impossible to prove they make a difference one way or another, nobody can deny that if they did not happen they definitely COULD NOT effect the outcome (in fact that’s the only way to make sure they do not). Only official count numbers should ever be reported (after ALL polling places close).
The entire control of how this “election” turns out is in ANet’s hands so I for one am not considering it a valid vote by an stretch of the imagination. The fact that so many players ARE seeing that way is slightly amusing to me.
