I would like to personally and most cordially extend the biggest middle finger possible at whatever game designer decided:

1. You need 3 wins

2. Make it cost 50 silver.

totally agree. I have nothing against time-consuming achievements like Halloween and Christmas. hell I even made every achievement of every update…

but this is just kitten. I won’t waste my gold on something like an achievement -.- I understand that the moa-race wasn’t made for this but then at least don’t make a kittening achievement where you have to WIN! It would be something totally different if you had to participate in 3 races but WINNING 3 races could make you lose so much gold. That’s the reason I definitely won’t even try it.

first update I’ll probably let a few achievements open. probably even skip the holo-shatterer-wings even though they look cool. this update is just unfunny gold-sink and time-waste unlike the special events before.

Ive spent 26g total to get the mini. Got the achievement with around 12g.

Tip: always bet on the same moa.

I usually just bet on the first one , place a bet go use the toilet, read book, eat something and come back check your mail…lol thats what i did and got my achievement.

You have really bad luck then. On average, you should only be losing 6s per race. Also on average, it should take you somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 races to win 3, for a net loss of 90s.

BTW, you don’t NEED the achievement.

yeah still doesn’t justify that you have to use your gold to get an achievement. Arenanet was able to avoid it before. why not this time?

Seriously though, some people so like to get all the achievements, I’m a bit of a completionist myself so feel like its way to expensive. The most I’ve ever had is 60-70g so if I wanted that mini or the achievement 10-30g is insane.

I think the most I’ve ever had is the 21g I got when I sold a holographic wing cover, so I could spend the money on the moa races to get the mini.

If you’re a completionist who is determined to get all the achievements then you commit yourself to doing things that are hard or time consuming or expensive to achieve that. Same way I commit myself to doing things I find boring, or going without gear for longer because I’m spending the gold/other currency to get the minis I collect.

There’s plenty of titles that require gold, I don’t see the problem.

Why are u guys spending so much gold just to get the achievement. Use the winning token to buy the bags and get your gold back. I dont think I lost any gold at all. I bought the 7 token bag and got 1 gold from each bag. I actually make some silvers if u minuse the couple times I’ve lost.

Pro tip: Bet on Mortt.

It’s all pretty RNG. I finally ended up getting my 3 wins, one of which thankfully due to a bug where a guy who came in second gave me credit. Another guy expressed similar cash drain for his wins as well. I’m sure there’s others who ended up probably making money on the deal.

I would have rather they kept the cost and winnings lower, such as 10s to bet and 4s/12s/28s payouts.

Agreed. 50 silver may not seem like much to some people…but to others….especially if they are just starting out, is a huge amount. It’s especially problematic if you don’t win.

I had to spend 4g to win my 3 races. Some people may have that much to throw away but others may not. I was fortunate that there were people betting that made suggestions on which moa’s to bet on. If they hadn’t…I’m sure I’d have spent way more than 4g for that achievement. I can’t say whether or not their claim is truthful or exaggerated, but it is conceivable that sort of streak could happen. As with any betting….the odds are ALWAYS in favor of the house.

Just got disconnected from the game AFTER placing my bet. This is unacceptable. It’s no secret they have been having issues ON THERE END with users getting disconnected. Submitted a support ticket for a refund, and I better see it. This is complete horse kitten.

I kept betting on Monna, after 5 races I had the achievement and had earned a gold or two. Don’t keep switching who you bet one, it’ll save you a lot of grief.

I just stuck to the same moa and ended up winning after a handful. Just about broke even after trading the wins in too. Id recommend sticking to one for, as I understand it, statistically they each have the same probability of winning and the more you switch around the smaller those chances get. At least thats how it worked for me, though I graduated with a degree in fine arts so take that with a coarse grain of sand…

Except then a lot more people would want the minis and the prices would jump up dramatically. All the people who currently insist on having at least once set of full exotic/ascended gear and either maxing cooking or paying out for food buffs would suddenly want and least one of each type of mini boost as well and they’d all be rushing to buy the new ones.

i bet on two moas i bet one til they won then bet the other took me 23g to get the mini. i bet monna and mortt all the way. i had my achievement pretty quick

After all, despite i’m a freaky completionist and need only this crappy achievment to complete all achievments from dragon bash event, i don’t even have the money to get this one….I’ve been playin this game for about 2 weeks now, and i was able to gather around 3,5g which is clearly insufficent money to grant me 3/3 wins….I wonder how in the world am i supposed to spend 2 weeks of gameplayon this and even so don’t getting any assurance that i would win the achievment?
Please, make this achievement cheaper or simply remove it from the game….

I came out on top. Made 1g and got the achievement in like 8 races.

Gold for achievements already existed. I don’t remember reading a single complaint, either. If people didn’t want to spend gold on them…. they didn’t.

1) Well you made a lot more money than I did my first two weeks.
2) technically you have roughly a month to do it
3) “on average” you lose 4s per bet, i think it took me 16 races and i lost about 2g (on 19 races total, after selling back my winnings)
4) I would like to see the price come down so it can be more accessible (even if the reward is just a small amount of silver instead of a voucher. 5s cost, and X silver rewards to make it equivalent to the current rewards)
5) why do you need to have the achievement? (if it is to just get the wings, it is quite easy to ignore moa racing) If it’s because you “need to have every achievement”, just no.

there were titles in gw1 that would take years to get (as at first you could only work on them for 4 days a year). And those titles actually had an in game effect, not just add a number. Others were mutually exclusive until much later (years) patches. I don’t mean to sound rude, but why should it be removed from the game just because some people can’t get/afford it? Especially, since it has no effect outside of adding 5 points to a counter.

Actually i found the Moa Race pretty simple. Only lost 80 silver to do the achievment.
Spent 6g always on Meep. Made 5,2g.

Always bet on the same Moa. The revenue you get from the races will almost cover your expenses. You’ll need a bit of luck of course, but not that much. Statistical math wil take care of the rest.

I don’t really see your point. If you’re that new or that strapped for cash, don’t do it. Also if you’re new you already have massive blanks due to all the other events that can never be filled, so get over it or let your OCD die.

If you don’t like it, don’t do it. Don’t complain about an optional activity.

Minipets alone… At least you can re-sell them afterwards… and then start using that to pay for cultural armor… shudder

I spent 21.5g ish on 3 wins but I had a lot of fun really, while my mate managed to profit 1.4g getting it.

Just chiming in that I also find this stupid. Been betting on the same moa trying to win and wasted about 10g already. Wouldn’t be so bad if you could make your own wager and have the reward dependent on that.

On the assumption that it IS completely random, the EV of each Moa race is -6s. On average it should take 15 races to get three wins, for a total loss of 90s. Of course that’s the average, it could easily take you three races (took me four because I’m stupidly lucky apparently, sorry folks!) but it could just as easily take you 100. I’d probably not recommend trying for the achievement unless you had at least 10g to cover a bad swing, though I guess it’s really down to how much of a gambler you are.

Of course if the result of one race does somehow impact future races then my numbers are all off and it’d be beyond my limited mathematical ability to work out.

tl;dr: over enough trials Moa racing isn’t profitable (unsurprisingly).

I’m currently a lowbe (lvl 15) and i’m 1 achievement away from the wings, getting 50silver at this lvl isnt easy

This is a bad idea, I lost a lot of gold betting on first moa only, I lost about 10g so I started betting on every moa in order and I won more tickets so I bought mini and I recovered every gold I’ve lost.

It was nice for earning money but now mini is too cheap and risk is too high and it’s time consuming but you can always betting and doing other stuff on computer checking every couple of minutes.
