If you don’t mind ruining the Fervid Censer or the Sclerite Shell backpieces, they’re account bound AND come with an infusion slot.

The backpack sets in the gem store come with a basic account-bound back piece that you can use for this. It isn’t exactly cheap, but it is the only viable option at this time. If you’re going to buy it from the TP instead of the gemstore, make sure you by the backpack SET item, not just the backpack skin.

Pink Quaggan Backpack Set, for example, has the account-bound strap as well.
Pink Quaggan Backpack Cover only has the skin.

I want Anet to know it’s wrong to give out a item for attending an event. That the player has to spend gold or destroy another item to transmute the gift. Just so the player can use it.

You are not given any items for attending aside from perhaps the helm.

I think the wings are handled just fine. Instead you should be glad that they are not a one use item, but that there are mechanics in the game that allow it to be re-used on new pieces of armor. Maybe not as easily or cheaply handled as warcrafts system (which can’t be used across characters), but you just need to remember you can’t bounce the item between items like you are changing underwear.

I’m not destroying an old event back piece.

It would be nice if ANet could put the same stat-less strap they supply with Quaggan/Charr backpacks on an LA karma vendor. It would help a lot in these “I have a novelty cover, but I don’t want to commit it to a particular character just yet” situations.

Alternatively you get free back items as a reward for your level 33 and level 80 personal story quests (I assume these are soulbound though) and you can get others from guild armorers and commendation traders.

You can also buy them on the Trading Post by searching for ‘back’, ‘spine’ or ‘brace’.
