The fanbase resents the RNG chests
-Drops from every mob in the world.
-Given from every mini-game in the event.
-Drops multiple times from holograms in every zone.
-Can purchase additional chests from gem store. And people STILL complain. What a bunch of crybaby whiners, seriously. If it’s not a handout to every casual tryhard then all of a sudden it’s the worst thing ever invented.. give me a break.
Let me know how 6000 or so just appeared in your inventory with little to no effort, because some people are around that many and still no ticket. That’s alot of time and money on their part.
Listen to what you’re saying. People have opened 6000 coffers… THREE DAYS INTO THE EVENT. You have an entire MONTH.
“Waaaaaah I farmed all day and didn’t get what I wanted immediately!” Or is it something like “I was stupid enough to buy coffers in bulk at their peak price and was not rewarded for my stupidity!”
I love that assumption, unfortunately, not all of us have the luxury of a month. We have real lives to go to, I for one start work on Tuesday which is full time 5 days a week, and on my weekends I attend another job for those two days.
Sounds like you don’t really have time to be playing the game. That’s too bad. Why does that mean you should just get a thing? No MMO will ever, nor should ever, be designed to accomodate those small few who don’t actually have enough time to play it. If you don’t understand why that is, or feel that isn’t how it should be, then I really can’t help you.
Another assumption. I do not expect to just ‘get a thing’ I am explaining why I and many others are grinding non stop since event has started. I find it kinda sad and also rather detestable that you would lump hard working individuals into this ‘ungrateful and expect everything for nothing boat.’
You work hard, for your livelihood, I assume. I can’t imagine you would be doing it because you find it fun or amusing, since you obviously have a fun and amusing game you would like to be playing. Since you are working for your livelihood you don’t have time to work for your prizes ingame. Since you don’t have time for it, you are posting here in a complaint thread, in favor of the complaint, therefore complaining yourself. You are complaining about the fairness of not being able to acquire a prize with extreme time constraints on your side.
How are you not lumped into the wanting something for nothing category. You are a hardworking individual, that is obvious, but it also has nothing to do with anything where getting a prize in the game is concerned. You don’t deserve it just because you want it, and you don’t have the time to go out and get it. The obvious answer is that it is fair that you may not get it at all.
I work 40 hours a week. I do, however have weekends off. I don’t play the game all day on the weekends though, so my time is limited, even if not as much as yours. In my case I’m choosing for it to be limited while you’re not, but it’s still limited. I can accept that if I don’t play the game enough I may not get it, by choice or otherwise. Why can’t you?

blah blah blah
I enjoy reading the forums. I post on many threads. Big surprise to you I’m sure.
I have simply stated why it is that I and many others are grinding non stop. That is a simple fact, not an opinion, not a complaint and not an argument of any kind. The person before me, asked why I and others would grind straight off the bat, he was complaining about it, he think’s I and many others are crazy. I have supplied an answer. You then go ahead and make the assumption that this is some kind of complaint, because to you, anything that isn’t in outright support of something is indeed a complaint. I don’t really care for your 40 hour week, nor do I care about how you think you can do everything or make time. I don’t care for your standards. And I don’t care to share with you my personal life, or how many more hours I am working than you. These things do not really matter, as I don’t care for your petty argument. I have stated why, I am grinding it out now, it is an answer to a question.
- I can accept that if I don’t play the game enough I may not get it, by choice or otherwise. Why can’t you?*
How am I not accepting that? Where did I say I deserve to be handed something?
I believe in hard work to achieve something. There you go. Shock and horror. That is why in the time I do have, I will grind non-stop.

So, I farmed the coffers for like 5-6 hours and bought about 15 G worth of coffers (from TP), opened them all and… NOTHING! God, this is frustrating me! Why don’t they add them in the Style tab for like 800 gems? I will not buy more gems for this, less buying gems with cash for stupid RNG crap.
I played a game that was only RNG-based stuff and it was kitten ing me off. If GW2 keeps creating skins with RNG crap, I will simply stop caring about stupid skins. I didn’t get any Fractal weapon, wintersday, flame and frost and still no dragon bash skins. God, why can’t I just spend my gems for a 100% chance to get a skin? Is that too much to ask for?
Or why not put the skins in the Zaitify merchant for Jorbreakers (like the wings)? I still don’t understand…
Ah, it was a matter of context. You made a statement with no contextual basis in a thread which automatically gave it contextual basis. All you were doing was giving a random reason that has nothing to do with anything, especially not the OP. By doing so, and by not explaining so, it seemed like you were lumping yourself in with all those who don’t have your particular situation. You’re not, so it doesn’t matter, and didn’t actually bring anything to the conversation.
Gotcha.

Just FYI, from the wiki…
Gambler’s fallacy
It is believed gambling addiction may, in part, be influenced by the gambler’s own erroneous beliefs about the nature of probability. If gamblers approach gambling with the intent of winning and they initially end up losing, the only way for them to break even or win in the long run is to keep playing.
Some problem gamblers have the erroneous belief that if they keep playing, they will eventually win. While it is logically correct to say that more trials of a probabilistic event increase the likelihood of the event occurring at least once, some hold the fallacious belief that previous failures influence the likelihood of future successes. If individual incidences of probabilistic events are independent of each other, then this belief is incorrect. To hold such a belief is to commit the gambler’s fallacy.
As an example, there is a 63.3% chance that a Vegas-style slot machine with a 1:100 likelihood of paying out each pull will have paid out once or more after 100 pulls.
There is a 39.5% chance that this same machine will have paid out at least once after 50 pulls.
A problem gambler that is susceptible to the gambler’s fallacy would believe that, if after 50 pulls the slot machine has not paid out, there is a 63.3% likelihood that the machine will pay out within the next 50 pulls, because there is a 63.3% chance of the machine paying out within any particular block of 100 trials. In reality, the likelihood that the machine will pay out in the next 50 pulls is still 39.5%.
The oversight made here is that independent probabilistic events do not actually influence one another. Gamblers are equating a posteriori probability with a priori probability. Gamblers believe that if there is a certain likelihood of a probabilistic event occurring after a certain number of trials, then as the number of past failures increases, the likelihood of the event occurring in future trials increases. The reality of the situation is that once a particular trial has been deemed a failure, we know a posteriori that there is a 0% chance of that event occurring, even if a priori there is a 1% chance of the event occurring. Within a particular set of 100 pulls, after 50 pulls we are no longer in a block of 100 1:100 events, but a block of 50 0:100 events and 50 1:100 events.

Apparently it’s too much to ask that a person be able to simply pay for what they want because it lessens the chances of someone feeling like a special snowflake for their hard work (AKA RNG luck).
Really, I don’t see how any player could object to there being a simple 100% way to get skins. You can keep your RNG and take your chances with get 0-to-5 skin tickets in your RNG gem chest … or just pay a flat fee for one. There, everyone wins. Gamblers can Gamble for the chance to get 5 tickets or nothing and people who wan the skin can just have it.
And no, I wouldn’t like a wings-like buying system with candy. If those wings are any example of how this system would work they would make a unbelievable cost for it.
God, why can’t I just spend my gems for a 100% chance to get a skin? Is that too much to ask for?
I will just say that you have to think about things from the perspective of the other side. Ncsoft needs money to sustain the no sub fee finance model. I don’t know how it all works or anything like that, but RNG has gotten them more money than just putting it up on the gem store. Also, someone else, somewhere said that one of these three outcomes could happen
1. They underprice the skins by a bit and don’t make as much money as they would make using RNG.
2. They overprice the skins and only a few people actually get them. Again, they don’t make as much money as if they used RNG.
3. They price the skins about right and people buy them. But they only buy the few that interest them. If they put it inside RNG, they can still make more money
This whole thing is very much underlined by every single “I bought a whole bunch of rich coffers and only got candy and fireworks” thread and post on this wiki. That person that bought 50 rich coffers may have only bought three or four skins if they were able to directly buy them. If the person bought 2 25 rich coffer pack (a total of 4k gems), but wanted 4 skins, the skins would have to be priced at 1,000 gems per skin just to make the same profit.
Cheer up, you’re playing an mmo for free.
It’s not free. They paid the initial cost. And then are buying gems. Is why most mmo go “free” to play. It’s makes them more money then monthly subs do. And when you are PAYING for something, you are supposed to GET something for your money. This is a game with features, in this case, skins, we are paying for. We aren’t going to a casino or buying lottery tickets. And if they want to model gambling, they can get a gambling license from every country they operate in.
Yes, we paid an initial cost. That initial cost got you the entire game that was there at launch. Then you got additional things added since launch (albeit most of it was temporary or seasonal but new things still have been added) also for free. You were not forced to pay anything. If you did buy things from the gem store you knew what you were buying, either an armor skin, extra character or bag slots, the pick/sickle, or minis, OR you bought boxes that had random items inside. You did buy a lottery ticket. What you got was the chance at getting things. So you did get what you paid for.
No where did Anet say “buy X boxes and be assured a ticket/skin.”
Now there is a big different between asking anet to put the skins in the store (in my opinion a valid request), and saying that you were ripped off by anet.
I know what you would like, but let me just pose two other alternatives to you.
What if the skins were in the store, but cost $100 per skin (leaving the boxes as they are now)? People would say that was outrageous and that they were just milking us for money, and only the very lucky or very rich could get them.
What if they didn’t sell any boxes and you could only get them via rnd drop, and there were no skins for sale in the store. Then only people could spend hours grinding would have any chance at getting a ticket, and only the very lucky or those with time to grind could get them.
While people say “I don’t buy rnd boxes, but I would buy the skin” there are plenty of people who buy the boxes. Within the first 4 hours of a 30 day event there were a bunch of people who spent over $100 in rnd boxes. Anet would not sell the boxes if they didn’t make money, and they apparnetly make more money then selling the skins directly. I don’t have a problem with this.
For free, we get a new LA skin, a fun (if you have both teams not afk), fast paced pvp mini game, and some new living story content. Also 3 free helms (1 for each armor type) a back item for casual play and another one as a rare drop. Would I like a jade skin or two? Sure I would, but if I don’t get it from dropped boxes, oh well. Also, while this doesn’t apply to everyone, as I’m sure some people will stick to the jade skins, look around. How many Halloween skins or Christmas skins do you see running around? Once the next event rolls around, most people will jump ship and try to get the new ones. Hell I’m still using my 1h fire sword skin from day 1.
For all those saying “you can’t complain because it’s free”, come over to my place and i’ll give you a free haircut… but you’re not allowed to complain about it because it’s free.

And where, pray tell did I say I bought a box, kitten I buy what I want. If I wanted a lottery ticket. I’d go play a lottery. Not a game.
The thing is they could make the odds much better to get a ticket and they would make more money.
Big spenders would likely spend as much as they do now, but with more of a reward for that spending and generation of good will, rather than ill will. It’s a virtual certainty that every round of rip-off RNG boxes has converted a portion of big spenders into zero dollar spenders. The current odds shred paying customers.
Much better odds would also encourage people with less money to spend to enter the fray, if there was a very reasonable chance of getting a ticket on their budget.
Another issue with these RNG coffers is that the value of the “consolation prizes” in these things has to be about as pathetic as we have ever seen. This greatly increases the ill will generated by these things and increases the odds that they will “shred”, i.e., lose a paying customer, who feels cheated after buying these chests.
People, lets put some perspective on things. We’re just on the 2nd day of the event here, yes some of us (me included) opened a ton of coffers and found nothing… YET… there is still what?, 28 days for the event to end? Plenty of chances to get a ticket!
.You don’t seem to see where people are getting annoy …
1 day or 2 days or 20, RNG is RNG and you could very well NEVER get this skin. Skins MANY people are clearly willing to spend money on.
It’s not good practice for players, it feeds on gambling and luck/ rng that drives people to buying coffers. I have gotten 7 rich coffers and I learned my lesson … never paying a gem for anything that’s not guaranteed again.
As for the people who PREFER RNG because they don’t want others running around with their special snowflake skin by buying them directly from the gemstore then they should really step back and think … if what you want is to be a snowflake then the BEST answer is to have more options. Heck, that’s half the reason I want MUCH more culture armor for Sylvari, to me my Sylvari only looks right with culture themed armor … and there are only 4 leaf armors in the game. Instead of wanting RNG armor or armor to cost as high as T3 I would just prefer there be a rainbow of cool and appealing designs that people could pick from.
Its all about perspective in my opinion. Just for clarification, none of what I am saying applies to rich coffers… I dont like real money gambling, never took part and would be pretty unhappy if that was the only way to get skins. But as it turns out its not. And yes you’re right there is a chance some people might not get one but thats a double edged sword.
If everyone was guaranteed one you’d run the risk few would appreciate it because it would have less value. Look at the toy weapons that everyone got multiple skins of cause they were so easy to get. How many people do you see walking around with those skins? How many complaints do you read on all forums how all items are impossible to get unless you pay tons of money where as every update had stuff you could get easily. But no one seems to care about the easy to get stuff. Even here you said it yourself, you might NEVER get a skin in this event yet there is 3 helmet skins that are trivially easy to get all you need to do is stand in LA for 5 minutes literally but you yourself completely discounted those 3 skins in your statement. Why is that?
I think you got it wrong, its not that people want rng so they’re a special snowflake at all. Its more of they want to work for the items so that they have meaning. Now it doesnt have to be rng, it could be like SAB did it, collect tokens and then exchange. But tokens or RNG it has to be something that requires a bit of effort to get else it will fall off between the cracks and not be as desirable. Its unfortunately human nature.

RNG really suffers from negative perception. Its just a different way of implimenting a token system. It just giving a dynamic price to stuff. It can either come very cheap (you get it on the 10th coffer) or you get it a bit more expensive (you get it on the 1500 coffer) … assuming an average of 1000 coffers per ticket. But look at the wings you feel are better implemented. You need 100,000 Zaitthingies for that. assuming a very generous drop rate of 3 Zaitthingies per coffer you’d need to open about 33k coffers. Do you think you’ll get 0 tickets in 33k coffers? You’d need to be very very unlucky for that really. The wings are a lot harder to get then the skins yet you seem to be more happy with them?
