Q:

I have read that using macros is not allowed unless it’s one click=1action. I assume this is the case, no matter what the circumstance.

Some of my guild mates want to use macro’s to program songs for their new Marriener’s horns. I want to know if this is allowed or if they are putting themselves in danger of being suspended.

You could write a macro using a program like Auto-Hotkey to cycle through a song when you spam the same key over and over again. This wouldn’t be against the EULA, because it’s one key one action, the action is just changing after each button press.

(Yes, now the problem becomes timing, but you can always include a delay into the Auto-Hotkey program to prevent it from moving onto the next part of the song, aka the next note, until it’s reached the desired length.)

Essentially, you’re hardcoding the entire song, a ridiculously long and meticulous way, so that you can bypass any illegal method.

And yes, it’s legal, since you’re just pressing one button for one action. (Use an unused button like PgDn or PgUp and unbind it from GW2).

I really want that to be the right answer, but I feel like it’s a bit sketchy (no offence intended). I just want to be able to deliver the most accurate and safe information to my guild as possible. I hope a dev. confirms what you are saying because that would be great!

A dev will not confirm nor deny what I have said. The rule is “one key, one action”. I wrote my response in accordance to that. If you’re just going to sit here waiting for a dev, I would suggest getting a tent and a fishing rod, because it’s going to be a long wait.

I’d be careful with that. I’ve always interpreted the one key – one action rule in a way that the action is not allowed to change every time you press the key.
If that was possible you could basically program all you attack on one key and spam the one after the other, which would probably give you an advantage over others in combat.
So I’d be really careful with that.

I would be interested to find out about this, too.
Wouldn’t the context of the macro come into play, or is it something which would be detected automatically? Given that the Macro wouldn’t give any advantage to competitive play or influence the economy in any way in this instance, I can’t see it being too much of an issue from Anets point of view (unless it is an auto-detect-instaban sort of thing). Having said that though, if you have any doubts, don’t do it.

the moment anet condones the use of any specific macro, everybody will be bombarding them with queries asking “what about this macro? or this one? are these ok to use too??”.

arenanet simply does not have the manpower or time to answer such petty inquiries.

use them at your own risk. if it is something that doesn’t give you a clear advantage in terms of progressing in the game and gaining money, it is most likely fine.

If you’re afraid of that, you can always just setup your entire numpad (if you have one) to play the song. Each key will be a different note, and then you can mash your numpad to a pulp, with a third party program throwing away all the excess keystrokes so you end up with the song being played with you kill your keyboard (minus the holding of keys, which you’ll have to do yourself).
