Why can I not play the game for rewards?
Technically you can just play the game and get all the rewards (except the 3 minis which are sold directly with no gambling, and the one made from them).
You’ve just got less of a chance of getting the weapon skins than people who buy the RNG boxes.
But I’d try farming the free boxes if I was you. Quite a few people are saying they’ve gotten tickets from boxes they got in-game, and I know a lot of boxes are dropping.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
There is no challenge in that, I am not helping anyone with that. That’s just killing random enemies and hope you are lucky.

It’s also just playing the game and getting rewarded for doing so.

Then where are my rewards?
GW1’s Black Moa scavenger hunt took time, but there’s very few players who didn’t like it. I did it about 10-11 times myself.
And it was just about going to places and getting stuff. The really interesting part was going into Sorrow’s Furnace.
Imagine if they did that GW2 style.
Yeah, it’ll take way more time and resources to do that some random box that you grind waiting in front of a spot because if you walk the enemies will get killed in a blink.
But it’ll also be way more fun. The kind of fun that you’d rather have every 2 months instead not-fun RNG boxes every two weeks.
Agree with OP. We play the game regularly when there isn’t a special event going on. But when there is, we’d really like to be able to do what it takes, earn in other words, a reward. There’s no earning with RNG – not if it takes exactly one very lucky kill to get a rare chest and then a rare ticket. OP got it right – there IS fun in working towards a goal that IS reachable. Not just statistically possible.

Isn’t that exactly what they did for the Halloween back item? (though it was on a smaller scale, I haven’t done the black moa scavenger hunt in years so I don’t remember it exactly). the main things that they’ve done for the events is reskin the towns, make various new pvp games and occasionally throw in a jp.
don’t get me wrong i’d love to have some nice quest chains. but remember gw1 was around for many years, all of those things were there during the first year. I hope that in the following years these events are going to keep growing, especially since they got all of the gussying up of the towns done.
The two Southsun backpieces (tentacle and flower) are also obtained through quasi-scavenger hunts, just like the Moa chick in GW1. The F&F fused gauntlets were obtained through playing the game. The shattered holo wings for Dragon Bash is obtained through playing the game.
Rewards for playing the game do exist.
