I have no interest in Dragon Ball, but figured it might be a little fun to bet on the Moa races, but found that you can only bet a fixed amount of 50s? WTF?

I’m a very casual player and although I’ve been playing since launch I only have about 10-15 gold across my account. Why should I have to gamble away a significant chunk of what little I have? Why can’t we place custom bets like 50 copper or 1, 5, or 10 silver.

It’s probably meant to be a partial gold sink. Hence the high number. Could’ve been other ways, like to reward less if you bet less, but eh.

I really think it was a last minute rush decision by the Q & A team
when you read the error prompt when you do not have enough silver you get:
“Sorry, you don’t have enough money to place a bet. Come back when you have at least a silver.”

Not trolling.

If they forgot to remove/ change this message from a silver (sounds like 1 silver) to 50 silver then we can assume that it maybe cost 1 silver before. WHY and HOW they came to the conclusion it would make sense to increase it up to 50 silver I cannot understand.
1 silver sounds like an increase to 1.5 or 3 or even 10, but not like it would make sense to increase it from 1 to 50.
Unless the “a silver” was just a placeholder for the right amount and has never been an option as an amount…

This game was obviously designed by their game currency economy guy. Its sole purpose is as a gold sink. As I was walking up I was sure that (obviously) it must be betting some form of event token or candy or something… Imagine my shock when I saw 50s… Still miffed about the whole thing.

Even with a gold sink as the purpose, they could have still had multiple levels of betting. The odds of winning would be are same and making the rewards equally proportional wouldn’t have been a problem either.

As others have pointed out, Moa Racing is a cleverly disguised gold sink. Although it’s possible for you to come out ahead, like any form of gambling, the odds are weighted in such a fashion that you WILL lose money to it over time. The mini’s are just there as sweeteners to lure you into using it.

As an achievement hunter, I will probably drop some money on it here and there when I have spare silver just to get the 3 first placings, then stop.

I’m surprised Tom hasn’t plastered his name all over the event by now, surely that’s what he usually does with betting on everything else?

The American’s are going WTF? by now, but look up Tom Waterhouse on google, he’s quite… infamous. He’s the PM’s best friend.

So clever. Instead of making the skins obtainable with gold and diamonds, he made a race and boxes.

Yep, it is possible, like in any game of chance. The math is set to make you lose money in the long run, however. Again, like in any game of chance.

To get the achievement, you have to sink 7.5 gold into it on average. Granted, you might get back most of it (or not…), but still, this and the 100k taffy for wings show a rather worrying trend on the side of developers.

Actions, not words.

GW2 is more and more becoming an accumulation of cheap time and goldsinks like in every other MMO and unlike in GW1. Actually calling this game GW is a joke.

This won’t end well…

50 silver is a significant amount of cash imo, however it seems the devs planned to cater for the ultra-rich with their thousands of gold and not us regular folks.

If left to my desires, take everything and /10. 50s becomes 5s bets, winnings becomes 2s/6s/14s for 3rd/2nd/1st respectively. This gives access to everyone without too much hardship cash-wise.

The way I saw this event was to obtain an achievement, three 1st places. With 1 in 5 odds of wining you need 15 races for the achievement. At 50s each race, asking for 7.5g just for completion is quite rude, particularly to those just starting in GW2.

It’s really not this expensive, unless you’re going for the mini (in which case you can look it as a cost to make the item and the achievement would be a foregone conclusion anyway). Yes, on average it will take 15 attempts at 50s each, but remember that you only lose 6 silver on average per game. So if we take the average case, 3 each 1st 2nd and 3rd place rewards, you end up out just under a gold.

Sure, you need some kind of bankroll to get going and weather early-iteration variance, but this is not exactly the biggest speedbump for all but those who are just starting the game.
