Edge of the Mists- Best Update Ever??!
If it lives up to the potential I think it has, then yes, I think it will be the best update since Gw2 launched. The only downside I see is that it detracts from old WvW (which is imo extremely stagnant). I will probably exclusively play Edge instead of “WvW” and I hope they use it as a new model to remake old WvW.
Zulu Ox Tactics [zulu]
I played in the beta, and I think it’ll be a lot of fun. There’s some interesting concepts Anet is playing with there. It’s good stuff.
Ya looks awesome. Anyone know when its supposed to be released?
February 4th, the next patch.
I have a feeling this is going to be another one of those updates that are great conceptually but executed poorly.
There is no group or guild queuing. EotM is also shared across all tiers meaning that all blue servers will be paired together on one team, same for green and red. It’s going to be next to impossible to get into the same overflow as your friend. Also while there are multiple overflows of eotm, there is no way to specify which one you want to join.
Basically you’re going in solo everytime with a group of disorganized strangers. Even if you pull together and get organized, if you dc there’s no way to get back.

It’s an overflow like any other. You should be able to join on friends. Not that that’s 100% perfect, but it does mean that groups, particularly smaller groups, are more likely to get on the same server.
And, this map really isn’t designed for giant zergs. I think these maps are far more suited to smaller teams.
Until it is out—it’s pure speculation based on personal preferences. For me, PvP and WvW—not even worth playing( ditto for the Moto 8bit junk). But if you like that kind of content it—enjoy it and have a blast.

Incorrect.
EotM functions like the mini-games. You get placed in a random overflow and you can not join on your group mates.

I’ll believe this when I see it. I’m not sure that anyone can make that statement definitively but the way Anet originally spoke about it, they spoke of it being a main map that can generate overflows.
The test server may well have not had that functionality enabled. If you have a source I’d be interested in seeing it.

Well this is something they should have fixed a long time ago.
Guild Wars 2 is the only MMO in history that does not let you play mini-games (like South Sun survival) with your friends.

In mini-games you can’t even try to join on your party members because the party display is replaced with your team. This is not the case in EotM.

I have the feeling that something about that concept wont work.
Just correct me on that one: When I join EotM I play with people from other servers who happen to have the same “color”, what happens if I log out and join EotM again will I play with the same people again or will I play with another bunch of people who have the same color as me?
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
You’lll be playing with people from your server and other servers. You’ll always be with people from your server. The matches last a week, so for one week you’lll have the same people….but you’ll always have a core group from your server…because your server will always be your color.
Hopefully, this will sit well with all those asking for ‘underflow’ servers or the merging of servers. All servers within a ‘color region’ will play together and fill a map! =)
If not, I guess they will see how such an idea works out. =P
The way I read the most recent update, is that the only way to get into the EOTM is from being placed into a que for a BL. I hope I am wrong, but I have a feeling that you will not be able to join on friends or be able to join directly to EOTM. If this is the case, it will prompt entire servers to all que for only 1 BL to generate a que for people to be able to get into it, then people will leave the BL when friends say there is a que and so on.
I could see this being a HUGE mess upon release, unless it is able to be joined directly and not only through a que. This could also make it very hard for lower pop servers to enjoy the content and make people all want to merge onto other larger servers. Though this could be a motive to reduce the number of servers Anet has to support. Who knows, we’ll have to see in a few days.
You’ll be able to go directly to the EotM map. You won’t just have to queue for a borderlands.
Best update ever? Please, explain why.
What kinda bothers me is that the LS will happen in a PvP map.
Best update ever? Please, explain why.
1) It’s a new map
2) It brings new Pve contend and PvP content, not that I like the boring idea of killing mobs but it should please both comunities.
3) For the first week or so PvErs will give us WvWers a bunch of free lootbags
4) It’s maybe a start in the right direction, less Pve and more Pvp content !!11!!

You must be new to PvP, because most PvPers I’ve seen both in game and on the forums despise all PvE crap in WvW maps. This doesn’t really please anyone.

Wasn’t PvP about challenge?
I am going to reserve judgement until I have actually seen it and played it myself, but my initial take on it is that you will now have 3 types of game play:
1. PvE
2. PvP
3. EotM (a blending of PvP and PvE)
I don’t see this as a bad thing. I am sure there are a lot of other people out there who are like me, and dabble in both PvP and PvE, but find that exclusive maps are just missing that little something to make it perfect…
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the hell out of both PvE and PvP, but the EotM looks like it’s right up my alley.
I likes a lot of PvE with my PvP.
I’ve often said before patches when people start complaining, they should wait to experience the content before making judgments. I say the same thing now.
The patch could be great or the patch could suck and we won’t know until we actually play it. And, as usual, some people will love it and some people will hate it. That’s life in the big city I guess.
But there’s no reason to judge anything but you’ve played it. So many things look great on paper.

There really isn’t going to be much PvE in this update at all. There might be some PvE mobs in EotM but it is not going to be the PvE experience that PvE players want. The complaining from PvE players will be nothing short of epic, especially since last LS update left them dependent on other players for achievements.
There will be a certain subset of players that enjoy both zerg battles and PvE that will enjoy this patch, but I fear the complaining from purist WvW players and PvE players will be a great deal of players. Also the ArenaNet factor is never to be forgotten! As awesome as an update can sound on paper they always find a way to completely ruin or marginalize it.

You are wrong. You can join directly at any time without a queue. You can also choose not to go to EotM if there is a queue (so you can go to another map or PvE).
Don’t think of it as the overflow map, but as the map that has overflows.
Who knows? The thousands of players who participated in the beta.

They drop the word “scarlet” and everybody just assumes it’s PvE. This map is no more a PvE map than any of the other WvW maps. There is no “blending”. Now, they have added some new mechanics to the map which previously have only been seen in PvE, but it is still very much a WvW map.
Btw, the three game types are: PvE, WvW, sPvP.

It’s a glorified overflow lobby. Temper your expectations. It’s a nice map but I don’t think it’s the ‘best update ever’. It’s sort of the cross between a content drop and a QOL improvement.
Thrilled to bits to get a new zone, can’t wait to explore this area
Also happy for all the QoL party and UI improvements coming with this patch.
“Best Update Ever?” Not even close.
Since I do not PvP, it’s a none update for me as well as many others.

When you talk about WvW, you talk about PvE people most of the time. WvW is nothing like tPvP – 1) You are required to level your character first and acquire the gear, through PvE obviously; hence, it makes pretty much any WvW player a PvE player at the same time.
If you want to experience something in GW2 that requires skill, go and play real PvP, i.e. tPvP. Get a team, play tournaments, get better.
Don’t try to sell me the bullkitten that WvW is anything like real PvP, ‘cos it’s just a PvE community that goes WvW for sheer destruction, nothing else.
Just like someone else suggested here, you seem new to the idea of PvP. The hardcore PvP players tend to focus on tPvP + they despise anything that includes traditional PvE only players.

I’m tired of this fake division between PvE, WvW, and PvP players. There are certainly some that only take part in one game mode, but that doesn’t make you better than anybody else.
The majority of players are going to take part in each game mode.
We’re all guild wars 2 players. Some “PvE players” have armor sets other than zerker, some “WvW players” have armor sets other than soldiers, and some “PvP players” have level 80 characters. Get over it.

Didn’t I say that? I actually pointed to the direction that WvW players are mostly PvE players, while the only truly separate group that’s not required to complete anything in PvE is tPvP players.
I couldn’t agree more with you.
I have high hopes for EoTM, but no group/guild queue, LS story elements forced into PvP, and server grouping system all has me really worried honestly.
Will withhold judgement until I actually play it though, but some of the concepts seem half thought out at this point in time.
Looking forward to seeing it!

Yeah, I was responding to both you and the person you were responding to. That probably wasn’t clear, sorry.
There is a lot of elitism (on the forums, I don’t really see it so much in game – on TC anyway) between those who consider themselves “WvW players” and “PvE players”. But it’s also between “PvP players” and everybody else, your “if you want real skill ..” comment. There are skilled players in PvP, WvW, and yes, even PvE. Different skill sets perhaps, but still skills.
Yes, some people probably will bring their zerker gear and build to WvW and get melted. Most people know that those builds don’t work in WvW and will adapt (welcome to a new fun game mode!) or leave (sorry to see you go, but not everybody will enjoy it, at least you tried it).

I’m really excited – medium scale open world pvp with pve in the background. No mandatory point capture and tiny maps of pvp, hopefully not as bland as the wvw maps. And best of all, server mixing = should be nice to play with players on other servers, on the same team.
Fingers crossed it’s going to be a solo roamer/small group roaming dream. Exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

I’m not worried about the LS elements. It’s true that they weren’t in the beta, so nobody really knows what they are like, but unlike previous LS elements inserted into WvW these elements are specifically designed for a WvW map.
Even if they do turn out to be terrible, they’ll only be a part of the map for a limited time.
The grouping system came from beta tester feedback, so if it doesn’t work … I guess blame us?

All these complaints about pve’ers in WvW will be forgotten. I find it hilarious that people would threaten to quit over such a small ‘issue’.

1) Nope, I only did the first training quest, from lvl 2 it’s only WvW for me.
Real pvp… oh boy you must be joking ! if you want real pvp disinstall GW2 and install GW1 man, you will realise theres a whole Real PvP world out there waiting for you, don’t be shy
BTW I will get back in tPvP only when Anet get theyr kitten togheter and starts implementing more serious game modes like tomb and GvG, but we all know why they choose this road, they prefer casuals over harcore gamers.
Best upgrade ever? No, that would go to Fractured! Oh wait… Sorry, I forgot: Fractured is a downgrade, not an upgrade.
Not really excited, have a feeling im gonna be dissapointed again ayways…like every other patch thats been released so far.Its just a holder for queue;s nothing else.It has no influence on wvw,you will be playing With people you normaly fight Against..something i dont really like tbh.The map should be for smaller scale fights, but instead there will be zergs allover the place, and the map will not be used how it should be used..and everyone will be yet again dissapointed.
Dont get this placeholder idea..why not a proper wvw map that atleast has some influecne on wvw, where it matters what you do ?

Move in the wrong direction—more PvE—new maps/quest etc at LvL 80 is required.

The grouping system may be great, the main thing I’m worried about is without any movement between the “teams” one team will end up stacked based off of which servers are in said team unless more randomization is added to the tiers, because as it stands most green teams are going to stay green 90% of the time currently. This may also influence future transfers based off of EoTM rather than WvW and end up messing up the WvW tiers further than they already are.
I would appreciate any sort of clarification you could add by the way if I’m wrong in thinking this might be a problem as I was not a tester. Thanks in advance!
I hope I’m wrong, and I do still look forward to seeing how this plays out as I said

I see your point, but in general, if they’re adding Scarlet and the Aetherblades to a WvW map, it says to me that there’s going to be a bit more PvE in the map.
And as far as game types go, WvW and sPvP are both types of PvP. They are different, but they’re still primarily PvP.
What you think it is:
Cool new WvW map! Great chokepoints, fantastic scenery, interesting objectives, asymmetrical design, something you’d like to play with your guild and server. The much-needed salvation to break the monotony that is 3 identical WvW maps and 1 unique one.
What it’s really like:
No cooperation, no warscore, random servers, “something to do while waiting for that WvW experience”. Almost like playing PvE living story events.
Then 6 months later:
Oh sorry guys we kinda goof’d up that EotM thing. Here’s a reconstruction that makes it how it should have been in the first place.
There’s a lot of potential in EotM, so I’m cautiously optimistic…
However, I’m still waiting for some content that really shakes things up such as:
– New playable race
– New profession
– New utility/elite skills
– New dungeons
– Player housing
– Raids?

Yea, that’s what most of us are waiting for I believe, but we take what we can get. Personally, I’m glad WvW is getting some attention for once even if it I think it may be detrimental to actual WvW.

I don’t think WvW is particularly skillful. All that matters is blobbing up on a commander and coordinating your blast finishers.

And its exactly and precisely those kind of people with that line of thought to whom the rest of us refer to as “lootbags” In addition, they are lootbags on whom we don’t even have to waste our high CDs or any finishers if they are PVE zerkers. Double that if they’re rangers, triple if uplevels.
Moar pls !!!!
As far as EOTM goes, the only serious drawback I see is being to que / enter as a guild. This is huge, since playing with random people often negates effectiveness of startegy, tactics, team synergy both by execution and build styles, etc. So all these elements will be undermined.
Also, playing with your own guild/community is what keeps many of us still in the game or we would have left it long ago altogether, I don’t think diving the said guilds / communities to different maps is a good idea and it will have a negative effect on that aspect.
