Language based chat channels for EoTM
This will however make tactics and such more or less impossible. How are you going to work together if people uses different channels after all?
From experience people tend to speak a language most of the people in the map understand when on overflows, so I don’t really think it will be much of an issue.

now then, back you go into my personal ignore list.
Krall is right, if people chat on several channels they will never coordiante. Many enough players speak English for it to work.
Just keep using your own language until Anet realizes this problem themselves.
I play on Ring of Fire. We have a fairly large community of Italians and one large Russian guild. They’re all big into WvW and we don’t coordinate with them now because they have their own TeamSpeak servers. The very few who can speak English will sometimes do so, but the rest don’t, because they can’t.
Should we talk about the French? They are as bad as the British when it comes to learning a second language, and there is a reason why the Spanish and German speakers mostly stick to their own servers too.
Now we can multiply this by? 27 servers? This is going work?
No, that sounds like a terrible idea. How can you not understand English….

Travel much? Seriously, my dentist doesn’t speak English.

You don’t seem to understand. EotM wasn’t made with EU in mind. Hell it wasn’t made with NA in mind.
Best of luck kicking up a big enough fuss to get a change made for you.
How is EoTM different to any other WvW map. You are fighting with people on your server, so if there are going to be language barrier issues then they will be the same language barrier issues that you already face in regular WvW…
@aspirine – lots of people don’t understand English… The only places where it is recognised as an official language and is spoken natively by the majority of the population are New Zealand, Australia, the UK, the USA and Canada.
Of course there are other places where it is an official language and there are a ton of countries where English is taught in schools etc – but those are all countries which have their own primary language that isn’t English. So expecting most of the world to speak English is just really ridiculous, because a lot of people are can’t speak it at all, or can only speak it a little bit.

No, all servers of a specific color are grouped together. So if your server is green this week, you will be grouped together with all other green servers.
To topic: You face the same problem in any overflow map. I also wonder how players are going to organize themselves (Teamspeak, commanders, …). But EotM is probably going to be more casual than WvW anyway.

My apologies, did not realise that was how it was working.
Regardless, as others have pointed out it’s not going to be perfect for anyone.
The NA servers are going to run into problems when you get servers with high Oceanic populations grouped together against servers without – because the servers with Oceanic players will be actively fighting at all hours of the day whilst those with only a NA presence will be quieter during NA nighttime.
I’m sure this didn’t occur to anyone at Anet but the EU is going to need more map wide, but language based chat channels.
The Germans, French and Spanish in particular have become accustomed to speaking their own language in /m and /t. This wont end well in EoTM, so I suggest…
/f Francais
/d Deutsche
/s Spanish
/i Italian
/r Russian
/e English
/d is /squad chat, /s is /say chat. Also, wouldn’t /e be for Español?
One suggestion I had for another game was to use a translation service (Google Translate/whatever) on the players’ behalf. This could even be done on the client.
I’m not sure how the translation services would deal with some of the acronyms/lingo that some regions use though – still, even poor translations would give players a general idea of what is being said.
In all honesty though, this isn’t a problem. European players/problems are notoriously ignored or poorly treated by all MMO devs – I am not holding thumbs as to any attention being paid to us regarding this problem.

People should speak English in EotM, that’s it.
If the won’t fair enough, I don’t think there will be much coordination needed tbh, I think people will mainly play with guildmates and other friends.

Well I might not speak German very well, but I can understand it just fine.

than there should be no problem when we germans just write german
I have no problem with that actually, I quite like German. But I also hope that if someone writes in English people will understand that too.
What I dont like it people using different channels and things go wrong because of that.

Oh this stupid argument again “HURR DURR learn my language.”
- By first language Mandarin wins (Spanish 2nd, English 3rd). – so in theory we should all be learning that.
- By ability to speak, be it first language or second language English wins (Mandarin 2nd, Arabic 3rd, this conclusion was reached by sorting by “Total Speakers” under the “Ethnologue” heading in the above article) which is really no surprise as it’s the International Auxiliary Language of the 21st century.
Get back under your bridge. It has nothing to do with who’s language it is; it has everything to do with international agreement.

Exactly its being ignored. So it is a problem.
Since a majority of European nations require American to be taught as a secondary language, I think everyone should be fine if they speak that in game.
Fun fact: Anet has already put the foot down on the official forum language. Its English. Says so in Code Of Conduct.
Why should EoTM be any different? If people cannot speak English, then they can speak their own language in more local channels – group chat or say chat, or of course guild chat.

*It isn’t seen as a problem, I worded that poorly.
Its English. Says so in Code Of Conduct.
[…]then they can speak their own language in more local channels
To be completely honest I see EotM presenting many more challenges than language – it should be fun.

Fun fact: The Code of Conduct for the german GW2 Forum says:
•Die offizielle Sprache dieses Forums ist Deutsch. Bitte postet und antwortet nur in dieser Sprache.
(Official language of the forum is german. Please only post and answer in this language)
So english is only official for the english Forum.
And since there are several language servers I wouldn’t be astonished to hear/see other languages as well.^^
That beeing said a language is a tool for communicating. So try to communicate, translate if you can, instead of insisting in one language or even getting angry at people who use another one.
The basic idea is good..
I’d change it simply to this:
/ger = German
/eng = English
/fre = French
/ita = Italian
/spa = Spanish
/rus = Russian
/dut = Dutch
/bel = Belgian
/por = Portuguese
/fin = Finnish
/nor = Norwegian
/swe = Swedish
/dan = Danish
Just with 3 letters, makes it also visually easier to recignize all of the countries and ther languages, because 3 letters are mostly ever used for something like this…
Simply an improved version of the general Map Chat. All what it needs is a Language Flag that a player could activate for the Map Chat by typing it the / and 3 letters for your own language andyou’d get into an own specific Map Chat, that is only active to all the players, that have activated the same 3 letter chat code and to prevent people from trolling/insulting ect. pp writing an other language than the activated language map chat could be reported and could lead into bans if that person doesn’t stop to write in an other language, after being warned several times in English first.
EotM needs to have/get improved Communication Channels when that Map will mix together all servers based on their shared colors, what will definetely not end very well, if Anet doesn#t change something about the Map chat to guarantee, that the communication in WvW won’t turn in that map into total language barrier chaos, especially due to all using their own TS-Servers ect.
Mixing all international Servers in an huge Overflow Server maybe looks on paper nice, but if theres no working communication among each other, it won’t work.
And it will be chaos, if everyone writes in one and the same chat all kinds of various languages, where theres a group of people, for example some french people, which despise to write any words in English and just permanently write in french, together with a group of russians with the same mentality of that from the french players maybe and a german speaking server.
Among all 3 sides maybe will be also some people, that will easily adapt to English, but you will always have lots of people everywhere, that simply can’t understand nor speak a single word of English, that will stick to their own mother language…
Thats then the moment, where communication chaos will arise and where I think, the first days after EotM release will quickly show that this is surely not a problem, that should be so simply underestimated.
You will ever see people, that will be angry at people, when they speak in a language, that they don’t understand personally, thats how humans in majority are…
Same as you will have always complete ignorant people with the mentality, that they never need to adapt themself to anything, also not the language in an international game, where understanding each othe is essential key of playing together successfully

Not even close to the truth. I should know. I live here. The dance club my wife and I go to? There are 4 English speakers including my wife and I. The local pub for happy hour, only one other guys speaks English.
My wife and I regularly vacation in France and Spain. In France they pretty much expect you to speak French, even in the tourism industry, and in Spain the hotel staff normally speak better German than English.
In a lot of European countries students are being taught German, because that’s where the jobs are these days.
And it’s “English”, not “American”. Seriously, you Americans have no clue.

To be fair many countries does actually teach American English rather than British English, so he is somewhat correct.

that’s quite sad that you block people just because they have a difference of opinion from you.
krall? he’s either a paid shill, or an answer bot.
I think lordkrall has been doing a great job remaining civil, despite you calling him out on two occasions. In comparison, you called out an entire country and stated that “you Americans have no clue.” That’s pretty inflammatory.
As zamalek pointed out above, English is the third most-used language in the world (behind Mandarin Chinese and Spanish). The information also specifically states there are approximately 365 million NATIVE speakers. I don’t believe this number includes the total number of people who may use it as a secondary language and/or have some passable knowledge or understanding of English.
With that being said, many Western languages share a good many word similarities. It is easy, sometimes, to get the gist of what someone is saying by being able to read just a few words.
I plan to communicate with my fellow GW2 players through smoke signals and interpretive dance. Get on my level.
Wish that there was an build-in translater that translates language to your personal choice language. :/
Unfortunately that’s impossable.

I’ll just use my quaggan war chants. Everyone should understands those.
If not then may Dwayna have mercy on you.
