You sold this game as “play how you want”, and it seems you don’t get it’s meaning.
We zerging all 3 knights (in an unintended way) and killing them 1 by 1 was us sending you a message: this is playing how we want, not how you wanted us to play.
This change just forces us to play in an specific way and not let us choose how… please adress that in the future updates. If the players are happy doing a massive event like this one 1 by 1 instead of the 3 at same time (wich was still very challenging to get the 6minutes achievement) don’t remove it, it was fun, and the best part of it: we could kill them at same time, we tried, but we did choose to kill them 1 by 1, how we wanted.
So… suggestion for next updates: provide 2 ways to do things, let players decide and don’t force an unique way.

The Zerg has spoken, we are one, we are legion, we are the sheeple
Phew, almost 24hrs without a “you sold this game as play how you want and I can’t play how I want so you lied Anet I hate you!” thread.
Was starting to get concerned. Now the world is back to normal.
I agree with the OP. I mean.. why we even gotta fight the knights at all? I don’t wanna play that way! I don’t want to have to kill the holo either. I just want the loot bags and the chest at the end. Why oh why would they force us to play this way?!
Oh wait… because games have rules you need to follow.
Darn you A-net. You win again.
“Play the way you want” was only ever used to refer to two very specific aspects of the game:
1) The fact that professions don’t have dedicated roles, so you’re not stuck doing the same thing in every situation because of the profession you chose.
2) The fact that end-game armor (exotics at the time these statements were made) is available from a variety of sources so you can choose which one you want to use to get it instead of following a set order of dungeons or raids or whatever.

Speak for yourself, mate. I hate the super-zerg. I’ll gladly split up a bit and fight this way and I know that I’m not alone.
The reason that everyone previously rolled with the mega-zerg was that it was the only option. Roll with the crowd and get 18 Champ Boxes, or try to solo a Legendary Knight yourself. It wasn’t much of a choice.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not to zerg it out, we are capable (and we did) split up and kill all 3 2 consecutive times in the past 2 hours. It’s just a matter of choice, if players wants to do it in an specific way that STILL provides a challenge, i don’t see why they should change it.

You always had the chance to do them 1 by 1 or the 3 at same time. In my server we did a couple of tries with the 3 at the same time, you just need to speak with the commanders and try it or be a commander yourself and try to make people follow you, this is a social game.
The point being that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Both leave a naked cat. But I see you built a battle with a time approach to the holo battle after, and the problem is that 1×1 style starts the timer too soon for the holo battle because it starts after the first knight is dead and in the 1×1 style you could not have enough time to do the holo fight. Which is why we were failing the holo fight.
One thing I don’t understand however is How o you get attuned before all 3 knights are down. I thought you could only do that after they all were down. I know tonight I stayed at the blue knight and never got the red attunement just blue and green. Eventually I got a chest for it with a core and some stuff. Very skimpy stuff. Also that battle finished my LS Achievement and talk about a skimpy reward. The only rewards I’m looking for now are ascended ones or dragonite ore. I had my level 60 in so that might be why she go no ore but that’s a pretty slimy excuse.
Good, the zerg was never intended. WvW was a good game mode until the zerg came and it just ruined it. Now you want to do the same to PvE?
Massively multiplayer shouldn’t mean a clusterkitten of enough people that you have the destructive power of a modern bomb.

Core is RNG, …..
The issue is… Zerging managed to at least get close to killing all 3 knights in time.
Now, even if you’re in a full overflow, it seems impossible to manage 6 minutes to Knightfall.
People don’t seem to understand the whole calibration mechanic.
“Oh, I’m hitting 0. No idea why that is. I’ll just keep standing here using auto-attack.”
While I enjoyed zerging (it was easy) I can understand the change. But the change went too far rising the bar too high for many overflows. And managing it in 6 minutes now is like this achivement is put as joke.

What do you mean I have to attack from behind the Warden?!? And why is my bear not doing any damage?
As always: Game mechanics > Play The Way You Want. You cannot make a game without rules.

And they’ll learn it. It’s not that hard. Yeah there’s going to be a day of two .. “Zerg…what no”..“no damage ..WHY…” .. but they’ll pick up and we’ll be managing this boss no bother.
I am really over the people complaining that Anet programmed in mechanics for a battle to make you have to use skill and teamwork and generally know how to play the game to win it.
I wish they never used that line and I am pretty sure that is the way they feel themselves (apart from being quoted out of context around here usually). So, know what, I love military simulation games, I WANT TO jump into an Apache Longbow and rain ASMs on Scarlet. What, I cannot do that? But you promised me I can play the way I want to! Unfair!

As somebody drawn to the concept of freedom of playstyle, even I am starting to feel like enough is enough.
Death to “play as you want!” It’s just an excuse for bad behavior nowadays.

Yeah but what’s wrong with rules?
As Danikat explained, you’re misquoting the “play how you want”. It was never given in the context you quote it in.
And the rules exist because without a set of rules, a game isn’t a game. It’s what prevents the trivial way to fulfil the goal, those rules.
