So Much Blur
Awesome!
So Much Blur
I voiced my concerns regarding the move to the Vigil in another thread, but as for the actual content and the action in Lion’s Arch:
It’s amazing! I couldn’t be happier with what they’ve done. I love that they torched the game’s main city, I love how the designers made it look like a war zone, I love the new creative pathways through the map. I love the events, the mob scaling, the champs. I love the fact that we have to save citizens, sift through rubble, etc. And I love the loot.
OH, and the backpiece! So good.
Amazing work Anet!
OK, its a Zerg Fest, OK, its a grind event fest, OK, lots of overflows, OK lots of bugs.
BUT THIS IS AWESOME!!!!
Grindy zergfests with overflow problems and lots of bugs (not to mention dealing with horrible FPS in the events despite having a powerful PC) equals not fun for me.
But to each their own.
Glad you like it. As for me, not impressed.
It seems that Anet has mistaken good quality content and strong story telling with grind.
I found the event pretty frustrating. Either stick with a zerg and enjoy lots of skill lag, or try and jump around the map to get to the ‘side’ events before they end, usually failing. The marionette was nicely structured, this was just pure chaos.
The only incentive is to get the achievements and the loot, but if they nerf that then there will be no inventive at all. My only hope is that this goes away in two weeks.
I agree this is awesome. IMO this should be a zergfest. We had our updates that strayed from this mentality. Wurm and Marionette focused on group coordination. EOTM was lore and a new WvW. This needs to feel like a warzone. This is what happens in a warzone. Massive battles. I think they did a great job at creating the chaos that needed to be shown.
Glad you like it. As for me, not impressed.

You are playing the wrong genre if you don’t like grind. Go play an RTS or FPS…
I too am really enjoying this update. It’s got zergs but not just a single mindless mob swarming a route thru the city. To succeed at the highest level, organization is required. This will come in due time.
I love the backpieces because they aren’t relegated to a single meta achievement reward. They have multiple tiers suitable for all characters. They have avarying appearances. They have selectable stats. You can have many, so it’s alt friendly. I like the look of the basic model with no blades so I’m gonna make an extra.

Um, no.
My guild is having a blast – and we have more players online doing this content than we’ve ever had before.
Yes, it can feel a little zergish, but its an INVASION (led by a lunatic, no less). Its supposed to be chaos.
It may not require the coordination/organization of something like the marionette or Tequatl, or the strategy involved in something like Twilight Assault – but it does create a fun mid ground that most players can enjoy (and those who just hate the zerg have things to do as well – moving through the city in smaller squads rescuing civilians – which can be alot of fun).
Most importantly, for those who were there, it’s hard not to draw parallels to the last major LA invasion – the first Karka event – and see that Anet is learning from their mistakes/making the game better each time around. I’m genuinely excited for what may come next.
finally! the smell of war in pve! kudos A.Net I am enjoying this update and the action +1

I think his point was that every (and I mean literally every) MMO has grind, and if you are not a fan of grinding, then MMOs are not the genre for you.
I think we need to all take a break from the “OMG grind in GW2, that’s unacceptable!” stance. It’s an MMO like any other, despite what their intentions were years ago, the game is what it is now, and at this point you either like the game or you don’t. Pick one and move on. I and many others are so tired of the “Grind Wars 2 lol” topics. We all get it, you heard/read there would be no grind, you see grind, and you want the “haha, gotcha, there IS grind when you said there wouldn’t be! Haha Anet sucks!!1!” moment.
It’s a dead horse, and you guys are beating the ever-loving kitten out of it.

War/Invasions are not organized sterile events. The planning of it might be, but the actual reality of it…nope. Loud, chaotic, sometimes terrifying….oh yeah.
Amen.
Am I the only one that, after two runs of this, felt mentally exhausted? That hasnt happened before to me, I had to take a break from the mental exhaustion of dealing with it, lol!
But I agree, this is how it should have felt, it being an entire invasion.
And I haven’t lagged. Not once.

The problem is most of the events end so quickly you can’t get there in time to help. All of the escort/rescue events need to ‘wait’ until someone shows up to escort them. Getting around the dark torn up LA takes to long when the events only seem to last a minute or two. I got tired of the ‘save the children’ events which are very long so I tried through one whole invasion to do rescues and spent the entire time running around getting nothing done.

Try coming in from a different door?
I can understand making some of the events a little longer; however, I don’t think they should ‘wait’ until someone is there. Fleeing npcs trying to make it out whether someone is there to help them or not adds to the immersion, at least to me. It makes sense that people are going to try to get the heck out of dodge before they end up killed.

What I’m getting from you is that you want new content every day, every hour, every minute. You don’t want to do any sort of content anymore than once, because that constitutes grind.
I hate to break your fantasy setting, but the real world doesn’t operate like that and you will never get a game that has that type of structure.
Maybe wait a few hundred years and then you came make design your own VR game where you can do what you want to do.
Until then, suck it up or quit MMOs.

You sure read a lot into things. Allow me to clarify. I understand that there is going to be grind in this kind of game. I get that it comes with the territory. However just because there is grind doesn’t mean that the story line and the content have to fall to the wayside. Which in the case of GW2 is exactly what has happened.
The plots and the twists and the characters of the gw2 world are just not that interesting. Mostly one dimensional. In a word, boring. This is not a book that you can’t put down. It’s a poorly told story that makes the grind even more unpleasant.
And no I don’t have any suggestions for fixing it. It’s just a shame that the developers have decided to go with a weak story and lots of grind when they could have opted for a strong story and grind.
Glad you like it. As for me, not impressed.

Do not put words into my mouth. There’s no need to white knight for anet. They are perfectly capable of speaking up for themselves.

This game wasn’t this grindy at launch. Arenanet already proved that MMO’s do not have to be grindy to be fun. It was the Living Story that changed the paradigm.
Yes, there were grindy bits in the base game (for example, collecting tokens for dungeon armor) but these elements were not time-limited and you could work at them at your own pace. In contrast, two weeks or even a month to grind 250 heirlooms is simply not sufficient.
A bit of grind is expected in MMO’s but this is just ridiculous.

Well if there was a chance the marines where going to show up and escort you would you wait a minute before running for it? Maybe the event could spawn a bit earlier so people have a chance to respond to it rather than waiting around for it, doing nothing?

Son, if this is “ridiculous” grind in an MMO then I suggest you quit the genre.
It only gets worse in other games.

My problem is I’ll have to make two for the character I ultimately make it for. Possibly 3 if I ever choose to go Ascended. One to upgrade, and one to transmute onto the upgraded one. Since you can’t upgrade them if they’re transmuted. So then I’d need a third to eventually get to Ascended to transmute again. But whatever, it’s not like the parts are hard to get.
I just wish I’d realized the result was just another part, and not a recipe.

I could definitely live with a little dialogue before the events, like what happens with the Lighthouse.
“Alright kids, get together, we’re going to get you out of here.”
“Yes sir!”
“Meep, Mott, Mokk, everyone here?”
“Squak!” “Squak!” … “Squak!”
“Keep up you stupid Dolyaks, we’re getting out of here. I’m not leaving any of my wares for looters. If I’m lucky we’ll run over Kiel’s corpse on the way out.”
Then there would be warning that something is going on rather than mobs just appearing and making a break for it.

Depends on the chances of survival during that waiting period. If they aren’t any better than making a break for it, yeah I’d make a break for it, but that’s just me. There is also the factor of possibly making it to the rescue sooner. Lot of variables depending on the situation. Then again….considering some of the issues with friendly fire….those marines might be just as likely to shoot me as save me. =/
However, some of the events feature animals – dolyaks, moas. Their base instinct is going to simply be ‘run.’ Even the most intelligent of animals fall back to primal instinct when in a panic and terrified. Making those types of events ‘wait’ for rescue doesn’t fit, where rescuing the children it might fit. But even in that case, I can still see the adults trying to save as many as possible of their own accord, as it would simply be an instinctual response, especially with the toxicity of the miasma to take into consideration.

This is inaccurate, if slightly. You don’t have to grind… you have to grind if you waht the heirlooms and the stuff that comes with it, but you don’t have to get that stuff, and you won’t be losing the game, as all the stuff being offered is cosmetic.
Thus… head in once for the storyline, save the citizens, then go back to what you were doing before. TADA, no grind! And since the gear being offered isn’t necessary, unlike gear releases in other MMOs, you lose nothing.
