Citizens screaming
The citizen runs to get away from what they can only presume is a raving lunatic.

My Sylvari necro must be one scary sapling. She encourages people to flee just by clearing her throat at them.
About time some mentions this.
It’s more distracting than disturbing right now in my opinion.
LOL at female Sylvari encouragement that sound like some monkey calling.
10 people enourageing 5 citizens standing close to eachother and you start to feel like you are in a jungle or Zoo with all that animals moans around.
Our shouts of encouragement are like how The Sims speak. Gibberish.
Your sensual grunting and shouting heals them and gives them vigor to allow them to run away, even tho it wears off pretty fast.
I don’t think Arenanet cared about this. This is not the first time they have done it like this, and it will not be the last time.
My guess, saving cost on voice actors…… just one generic Ah! Ahhh ahhh! Errrr ahhh! ahhh would save thousands of dollars in voice acting fees…… since they don’t need to hire any voice actors to begin with….
Funny thing is that all citizens seems to understand what you moan about.

You know, they dont really need any special voice actors for the job, they could just record few developers voice acting, its not that hard to act some short sentence, infact many game companies used their own developers voice acting for some less important characters in their games.
they could just make the character do a /cheer or something
they could just make the character do a /cheer or something
This would make the most sense. Instead we get this mildly erotic grunting.
I guess I’m going to have to try rescuing citizens on something other than my two Asura. They just go, “HEYYYYY! YA! YA!!!”

Sometimes devs even voice important characters. Metzen immediately comes to mind with his pet characters Varian and Thrall.

haha! My daughter played The Sims Online and would stand there and make pizza. I’d hear madness in her room, and walk in, asking her what the mad chatter was coming out of the speakers.. oomblaa essta ramano! She’d inform me it was Sim speak for pizza orders, as if I should be fluent in that stuff. Seems she was !
Madness, lol! I still have dreams sometimes where I hears Sims babbling in the background…
This encouragement stuff.. disturbing.. thoughts in this here thread!
I consider this a wasted opportunity to add a little bit of personal rp to the event. Each character has a personality choice. A small rotation of text statements that pop up during encouragement interactions would have been a lot of fun and easy to add in because they wouldn’t have to be voice acted.
Examples based on initial personalities:
Charming-
You have to get out of here but don’t worry I’ve got your back!
You can’t give up now, besides you’re far too clever for them to catch you. Make a run for it!
Try to be strong, just a bit further and you will be out of the city.
It’s you! Oh, I’m so glad you’re alive but you have to get out of here right away, the miasma is getting thicker by the minute.
I know it looks as if all is lost right now but you still have something precious left, your life. Please leave now and save yourself!
Honorable-
You cannot hide from them forever, eventually they will find you here and kill you.
It is decidedly unwise to linger in this place, the miasma will surely overpower you.
Don’t give up now! Your continued survival means there is still hope for Lion’s Arch.
They’re evacuating Lion’s Arch! Make haste and you shall be numbered among the survivors.
Die in fear or live in hope, the choice is yours. If you choose life, I can help you escape.
Brute-
Do you want to die a coward? No? Then get moving!
If you don’t start running right now I’ll make you wish Scarlet’s minions found you instead of me!
Rarrrggghhhh! If I was working for Scarlet you’d be dead now. So better to run, you’ve nothing to lose!
The blood, the screaming, the broken and burning wrecks of a once proud city…how can you huddle here cowering when there’s so much revenge to be had!
I’m going to count to three and if you’re still here by the time I count two you’re never going to make it to three. Ready? One, tw-yeah, I figured you’d be one of the smart ones.

Vespertilionidae, that is fantastic!
You’re right, it really would have been nice to see it done that way versus our odd forms of encouragement we’ve got going on now.
Heck, if they’re hiring writers, you maybe ought to apply too. Well done!
I guess I’m going to have to try rescuing citizens on something other than my two Asura. They just go, “HEYYYYY! YA! YA!!!”
I think there’s a song in that, somewhere.

Dag dag! I’ll have you all know Sims speak Simlish. It’s kind of adorable once you get used to it.
Apparently, my asura is blowing an imaginary horn too.
Why didn’t they use our /beckon? That would be exactly what our characters are doing, surely?

lol, Ceri! My daughter still loves the Sims, my son teases her mercilessly over this. She was so sad when TSO shut down.
I wish she’d play GW2 with the rest of us, but this girl plays some other weird game, and believe it or not..still dabbles in Ultima
I feel like my character has turned into Tony Abott.
“Eh, eh, eh, ah, I, eh, mmm, but, err, ah.”
I thought this was really, really dumb. Honestly, they couldn’t reuse any of the dialogue already recorded? Even the shouts the characters make with different buffs would’ve been more appropriate. “Run like the wind!” “Feel my turbulence!” “This rose has thorns, here they are!” all of those are better encouragements than Err! Ehhh! Errrrrh!
It would be great to get a dev comment on what the thought process behind this was. Budget limitations? Like the infamous “Go on” – dialogue?

Are you saying you don’t enjoy fist grunting the citizens to safety?
Yak’s Bend

Lol, it really does sound like something out of the Sims. I keep expecting the citizens to wave and respond “shoo flee?”
Should have put in the “Retreat!” voice instead.

And then instead we would have people complaining about how their character suddenly doesn’t sound like there character anymore?
Krall Peterson – Warrior

We make the people we encourage feel better about themselves.
“If this moaning dimwit can survive this mess, I sure can!”
sigh, why does someone always mention “the cost of voice-acting”
like it’s some un-written rule on the internet that you must mention voice performers paychecks or something.. and shouldn’t a mmo of gw2 caliber be able to scrape up some extra “resources” that is to say, talented people willing to contribute for nominal fees?
anyway, there’s quests in the open world that utilize “encourage this npc”
maybe it’s time they build an /encourage emote

Heehee, it’s quite alright to play Sims, really it is. There’s some real innovators in the custom content design area, and the Apocalypse challenge (Sims 2/3) is not for the faint-hearted! I spend my time just building for it these days, however. It’s a personal fallout from when I used to mod Neverwinter Nights years ago.
My daughter does both Sims and Guild Wars 2 (sort of…), but is currently really into Minecraft, modded with My Little Ponies! The only way to make her even happier would be to combine the lot (e.g. by day, save LA citizens from vengeful vegetation, by night, build houses/families whilst defending from zombies! – all whilst using The Dreamer as a multi-purpose weapon).
I agree, this was a terrible decision on ANETs part – really ruined the immersion for me. For crying out loud, how could they not have done this differently.

Wuba des nah…..
I think the screaming lends to the terror we are suppose to feel in the environment. It is a horrible event with people who are terrified and need rescue.
Screaming is very healthy for you. Go outside and try it. Scream as loud as you can.

My wife would say “Soo Soon” to me and “flicka flicka” when calling the cats sometimes just to mess with me.

The topic was changed so are we to assume that they are meant to be the screams of the citizens we’re rescuing?

It’s probably a mod that wasn’t sure what the OP meant, and changed the title.

I don’t know if my college still does this but when I was there in the 1980’s there was a long standing tradition during finals week of a campus-wide primal scream. I think it was at midnight. Everyone would step outside and let loose with an ‘AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA’ at the top of their lungs. It was surprisingly refreshing and mind-clearing during all the tense studying.
I’ve been more amused than annoyed at the inarticulate mouthings of our encouragement, though the idea of using pre-existing skill use shouts is a fine one. I have hope that they’ll be reworking the use of personality traits in the future, based on the horizontal progression CDI responses, but I’m sure there just hasn’t been time yet to implement such things for this season of LS.

Worked in a company that had a small sound proofed room, with a sign on the door “please scream here”.
It was well used.
Evidently there’s something to it, the squirrel in the tree over the garage joined right in…though he could only chitter. Thankfully no traffic was passing on the highway at the time.

GW2 now with Freakazoid’s “Scream-o-Vision”!
(Scream)
AHHHHHHHH!
The title of this thread has been changed – it was about the strange sounds that our characters make to encourage the citizens to leave, ie all the “aah, huh” noises (which lack words so that they work for all language versions of the game.
As the title has been changed to “citizens screaming”, none of the earlier replies make any sense, so this really needs to be locked to avoid confusion or half of us sounding just plain weird or nasty.

I like this idea. At least when I’m in voice chat with my friends while rescuing citizens I’m already subbing in more character appropriate lines. Although I’m not sure my necromancer is much more encouraging than the weird grunting, “I am death and I am here to save you!” “No, no, don’t fear the reaper!”
I find the weird noises your characters’ make at citizens much less strange than the animation.
You get an animation for blowing on a warhorn, but it happens no matter what weapon you have equipped. So my Elementalist is sitting here blowing through his dagger like a nutcase.
Should have really been the /beckon animation or something.

Yeah.. creepy indeed!
*edit-Ceri- Your daughter sounds too cute! I love The Dreamer as well, and if my any of characters could use it, I’d wield the heck out of it, too!

I kind of see it more like a “Ugh – another person just standing around” facepalm
I really don’t get the warhorn thing; they seem to have copied the warrior skill Call to Arms’ animation and its blast finisher but I don’t see why.

… That picture disturbs me! Definitely we needed a different look as well as sound for our “encouragement”.
(yeah, she’s pretty epic. sickening proud parent moment)
i love the screams, creates the mood.
hahaha, Ceri! That picture freaks me out!
I had my camera at an odd angle while I was digging though my desk and my son was behind me and said, “mom, you’ve got issues”. I look up and, “Hi freaky necro”. Son yells, “oh you gotta screenshot that, freakshow”. Done., lol.
Ahhh..kids, they have such terms of endearment, lolol! But it’s all good.. I know where he sleeps at night, bwahahaha!
