We voted her into office, and now will be her time to shine! We know Ellen was a dedicated and skilled Lionguard agent, and her training hasn’t simply vanished in the few months she’s been sitting in a councilor’s chair. Kiel shall rise, to lead the people of her city to safety! She will help us stop the invasion, as only a hero can!
Plus, she has a giant holographic Ellen Kiel ready to destroy the Marionette! It’ll be like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla!
Besides, what’s Gnashblade gonna do? Bribe the Krait? Neckstab the Marionette? Those are pretty much his only skills. Fleabag is useless.

Yay Kiel!!!
I can’t wait to fight side by side against this lovely lady. Her battle prowess will be needed tremendously during these hard times.
To arms Lion’s Arch! Prepare to protect the city and our lady!

Yeah, she’s been voted onto the Captains’ Council… so they can ignore her.
The only power and authority that she has is what they give her. Love Evon or hate him, at least he would have had more pull with the council due to having influence of his own.
There’s no way she can save Lion’s Arch. However, she may be able to help save the people of LA. And then, when this is all over, the Captains’ Council will publicly claim that she failed at her job to warn them of the incoming danger, and hang her out to dry to cover their own failures.

What influence does he have within the council? Bribes won’t work as they all rich and can simply take his business if they wanted to. He already knows threats won’t work, even if its “I’ll shut down my business”. So he would be in the same position, knowing of the attack but unable to do anything to stop it.

That’s probably exactly what will happen, albeit I see Captain Ironbeard coming under fire as well since he’s her Boss amongst the Lionguard.

Boom. I’m so excited to fight by her side and see what she’s prepared for the invasion (see: her latest dialogue). She has tenacity and conviction, plus abilities to research and organize talent. “kittenes get stuff done” never felt more applicable. Can we recall the rest of the LA Council after this?
And… I think Gnashblade isn’t totally useless. Just not useful in this particular situation. He could hand out free supplies to the citizens, but we’ll see if he’ll let his empathy win out over his desire for coin. But of course that’s not the kind of nuanced argument the Kiel vs Gnashblade topics embrace so. Rawr, down with the opposition?

They can’t simply take his business. They could take part of it, shut down the BLT in LA. But if they did that, THEY would lose a lot of money as well. Nobody would want to come to LA anymore, now that they’ve seen the Captains’ Council just take the goods and money they want. They’d go elsewhere. And you can bet your kitten that some smart asura would set up a new gate hub elsewhere, and start raking in the money when people move their goods through the new hub to keep away from LA.
Trade is a big part of LA, and Evon’s the biggest trader of them all. Unlike Kiel, they can’t just replace him with someone else. They may not like him, but they need him as much as he needs them. Kiel? She needs them, but they don’t really need her.

It all depends on how they went about acquiring the Black Lion Trading Company. Seizing openly could potentially cause traders to avoid Lion’s Arch however it is normal for a company to be brought out by a larger and more successful company, particularly when said company experiences problems.

Actually it would be very easy to replace Evon if he proves to be a great annoyance or threat to their authority. All they need to do is move key pieces of their board in favor of setting up Evon’s business to unexpectedly fail. No one would suspect anything if a few centaurs or even bandits ransacked Black Lion caravans, the bulk of the Lionguard is after all searching for Scarlet. It is even expected there would be an increase in bandit activity in such times. The fact Evon would appear the fool for not expecting this would discredit him and his business. The losses will quickly mount as the people loose their trust in his ability to ensure the safety of their purchases.
As the Black Lion Trading Company collapses due to the strain of the times, the Consortium rises. The consortium are more manageable, for all the council has to do is convince them a decision they don’t approve of will be bad publicity.

Sounds like someone has been too well spoiled with good books, movies, and shows. I hope they can put in something like that.
However I expect something a little more in the shallow end of the pool.

The Lionguard’s job is to keep the roads to and from Lion’s Arch safe. If they start to fail in that, then guess what happens to the authority of the Lionguard and the Captains’ Council? Plus, Evon could hire his own guards, further reducing the authority of the Council. Any short term gain would be met with long term loss.
Furthermore, Evon at least works with the Council, somewhat. Anyone that gets part of his business? There’s no guarantee that they’ll be as reasonable. Plus, as Evon’s trade takes a hit, everyone else will expect to be targeted as well, and less trade will go into LA.
And as for the Consortium? I think the Council already realizes that they’d be a bigger problem than Evon ever would be. Evon would work with the Council. He might pull or push them as he sees the need, but he’d still be dealing with them. The Consortium, given half a chance, will oust them and take over LA, if they can make a profit while doing so.
Kiel a hero?! don’t make me laugh. She’s done nothing since becoming part of the council. Ohhhh did research into the fractal… big deal. How’s the trade agreement with the Zephyrites – haven’t seen them lately, maybe Kiel barked at them in her overbearing tone like she does to everyone else.
Maybe she can take credit for freeing the workers like she did after finally understanding what Canach had known all along, then send him to prison while soaking up the glory.
I can’t wait to see what underhanded crap she pulls when Scarlet attacks LA. Chances are she’ll changed sides to save herself. Don’t count on Kiel being a hero.

It’s cute how Kiel has a similar, albeit smaller, thread. But the truth is already known. The one who was voted onto the vacant Council seat is inefficient, and lacks the necessary skills to be a leader.

Plus, Evon could hire his own guards, further reducing the authority of the Council. Any short term gain would be met with long term loss.
Their job also is to keep Lion’s Arch safe. Lion’s Arch has been attacked by an individual with several armies under her command. It is expected for the Lionguard to direct resources towards stopping Scarlet from threatening Lion’s Arch again. Trade routes aren’t as important as the city they lead to, after all what good is having a safe trade route if the city you going to conduct your business is destroyed or threatened?
Also as I pointed out Evon could of used the situation to establish a “caravan escort” service to alleviate the strains Scarlet has placed on the Lionguard, which in turn will bolster the defenses of Lion’s Arch when she does attack. There should be plenty of Gladiums the Charr High Legions can loan him, provided he still a member of the Ash Legion and there is still an interest in Lion’s Arch well being.
Furthermore, Evon at least works with the Council, somewhat. Anyone that gets part of his business? There’s no guarantee that they’ll be as reasonable. Plus, as Evon’s trade takes a hit, everyone else will expect to be targeted as well, and less trade will go into LA.
Then why isn’t he backing Ellen’s claims? If he does work alongside the Council in any degree then he would be obligated to warn them of an immediate attack. I know some of the Evon fans will say he has already and was ignored, which means he just as powerless as Kiel in regards of moving the minds of the council.
Also since Lion’s Arch was attacked several times already it is likely trade has already decreased, if not then it seems so long as the city emerges victorious traders will still trust in the council’s decisions. So as Evon is not a member of the council if his business mysteriously fails than no one will become suspicious since they will assume it was from his own bad business decisions.’
And as for the Consortium? I think the Council already realizes that they’d be a bigger problem than Evon ever would be. Evon would work with the Council. The Consortium wouldn’t make such a obvious power play, the bad publicity they already received from their other endeavors alone is enough to make them cautious when dealing with the Captain’s Council.
But I think we sort of derailed the conversation a bit. Evon wouldn’t resort to threats of any kind, since he is depicted as perceptive in his short story, as he knows it wouldn’t work. Bribery is likewise an ineffective tool when dealing with the Captain’s Council. So what else could Evon utilize that Ellen can’t?

True, we have derailed a bit. So, I’ll stick to a small answer to this last question.
Public Opinion. Evon’s free to manipulate it, Kiel isn’t because she works for the Council as well as being a member of it. Evon has people in every major city and several smaller towns and outposts. His reach far exceeds that of the Lionguard and the Captains’ Council.
The problem is, that’s a slow process and he knows it. I like both Evon and Kiel, but they’ve both let themselves get caught flat footed. Kiel can’t do much, and what Evon can do he can’t do in time. He can get people to demand air defenses, but not before Scarlet’s knocking on their door.

Because arguing over whether or not Evon is a hero is more interesting than arguing if Ellen is or isn’t a hero. She basically screams Paladin material where as Evon comes off as the clever rogue. A perfect example that was brought up is what both did with the stolen loot they liberated from the pirates. Ellen as any paladin would automatically chose to return the stolen goods to its previous owners while Evon picked the Rogue option which was to keep the goods and split it amongst his comrades.

And if Evon actually was more popular, he’d have been elected.
Who’s to say he wasn’t?
If the election wasn’t rigged, the Skritt King would have won, and the people of Lion’s Arch would have many safe burrows to hide in. But bad people stole election, and now the Skritt King can’t help. Now many bad things happen.
So very sad. But maybe that means many shinies to gather after fighting, yes? Hmm, maybe the election went okay after all.

raises hand Ok you caught me I rigged the election to make sure the Skritt king looses. What he stole my stolen…I err…mean liberated cookies, yeah let’s go with that. Of course in my haste I wasn’t paying attention where I stuffed the pilfered votes.

That’s simply because Ellen Kiel’s heroism in indisputable! Meanwhile, there are individuals making near 20 post’s on that other thread trying to make Evon appear to be a hero. When you have to try that hard to define something, maybe it just doesn’t exist in the first place.

We’re not really trying hard. It’s just such an indisputable fact, that so many people just happen to point it out :P

It’s always like that. The people complaining on the forums are only a vocal minority. Kiel’s supporter just enjoy the game.
Well… your Kiel is apparently not doing her job very well since Lion’s Arch will burn.
“Boo hoo, it’s not my fault the council doesn’t listen to me even though I have all the f-ing evidence in the world.”
Lolwut?
They didn’t listen when Cobiah wanted a fortress on Claw island. He got it done anyways and it has proven very useful throughout history.
Kiel doesn’t have what it takes and now Lion’s Arch will fall.

Cobiah is one of the founders of the city. Kiel is “just” the newest member of the council. Obviously, her voice doesn’t have as much weight yet.
Funnily enough, I actually agree with the Gnashblade supporters that Kiel shouldn’t have become a Councilor, despite being a Kiel supporter. Kiel’s not cut out to be a politician. She’d have served Lion’s Arch better as a general or other military commander. But between her or Mr Gnashblade whose “incentive” was just a barely disguised ploy to get us to buy more of his rip-off goods? I voted for Kiel. :P

And Evon doesn’t deserve the extra headaches and paperwork that comes with being a politician. I think his supporters should be glad he could sit back and simply tally profits for the day instead of having to put up with a bunch of pirate captains arguing with one another.r
Hero of Lion’s Arch? Her inability to foresee what Evon saw months ago has resulted in Lion’s Arch being unprepared for the invasion.
Written from the perspective of a Kiel supporter:
Kiel Supporter: Oh, Gnashblade. Looks like you got some free time ever since Kiel beat you fair and square.
Evon: I hope you’re happy with your idiot of a councillor. Don’t come crying to me when she leads this city to ruin.
Kiel Supporter: You’re just sore she kicked your tail in the election.
Evon: Stop being ignorant and pay attention. Kiel’s boss, Magnus, has the best Lionguard out in Caledon Forest while she’s playing in the Mists. We’re undefended here.
Kiel Supporter: Undefended from what?
Evon: Where have you been? First, the karka hit. Then sky pirates killed a councillor in front of everyone. Now, Scarlet. That bag of crazy hasn’t hit here yet, but she will.
Kiel Supporter: Lion’s Arch can handle one person.
Evon saw Scarlet’s invasion coming long before Marjory told Kiel how to do her job. If Evon had won the election he could counterbalance Magnus’ influence on the council and the foolish decision to send Lionguard so far from the city and he wouldn’t have been bullying Dessa when he could have been preparing Lion’s Arch.

Kiel didn’t stop Magnus from sending Lionguard to Twilight Arbor leaving Lion’s Arch weaker, Evon at least has an issue with that (Kiel is too loyal to Magnus to question him). Kiel only started preparing for Scarlet’s attack two weeks prior to it happening. Evon was warning us of it back in November.
Fun fact: a GameStatistics site did a survey of the GW2 community polling them on the game from April to August (http://www.gamestatistics.fr/Guild%20Wars%202%20survey%202013_Full%20Report.pdf) and while Bazaar of the Four Winds was the most popular release, the follow up Cutthroat Politics was the least popular (is it possible elections are polarising and not that enjoyable?). It’s also worth noting the other two releases in the bottom three are the Southsun ones – coincidentally featuring Kiel as the primary protagonist.
I think that last bit has more to do with the fact that players as a whole don’t really like Southsun Cove. It’s packed with very unfriendly monsters that mess with typical player builds:
1. Reef Riders steal your boons. The Vets steal your boons AND reflect your attacks.
2. Reef Drakes stack lots of confusion and reapply it very quickly. God help you if you fight more than 2 at once.
3. Karka have a high spike damage build, OR take a very long time to kill thanks to their double health bar.
During the Living Story most that didn’t matter. The massive MF and GF buffs ensured the island was a tag fest (at least on my server) because it was a good place to farm. It was similair to Orr loot drops on steroids.
Southsun isn’t much fun when there aren’t giant zergs of players running around, but at the time that wasn’t the case (at least not on my server).

Why should she stop Magnus? Magnus is the leader of the Lionguard she just a captain within its ranks. Magnus is more experience than she is and as such it is only natural she would defer to his judgement. Magnus is taking a hands on approach to the Scarlet problem, he not waiting for her to strike Lion’s Arch again he wants to strike back. A very understandable reaction to the damage Scarlet already caused Lion’s Arch. Also even with the Lionguard at full strength the city will still fall. She has five armies under her command, one of which can easily be replaced. Scarlet would win simply through a battle of attrition.
Evon may have been stating an attack was coming but took no precautions against it himself. This is because even if he was a council member he would be just as powerless as Ellen is. Scarlet’s resources are vastly superior to anything Evon could muster.
I am curious though why do Evon’s supporters want to burden their favorite Charr with the mantle of politician?
All I can say is that Evon has been warning us about this attack since Wintersday. Kiel? Not so much… she was just a holiday greeter.
Ellen Kiel as the hero makes sense.
Every plot moving character in the living story since southsun, all of them women.
New band of heroes, all women except for Rox. Rox has mommy issues: that’s all we know about him.
All of the main villains? Women. Scarlet, Mai Trin, Karka Queen.
The men characters in the story: buffoons like Lord Faren or cowards like Logan. (Both of these characters did brave things and could have been treated better).
Can anet even write credible men characters?
As for Evon. He showed up for one patch, didn’t do anything, and wouldn’t be at all memorable except that his voice actor is awesome. Does he get the lord Faren treatment because you have to be a woman to matter with these writers?
We voted her into office, and now will be her time to shine! We know Ellen was a dedicated and skilled Lionguard agent, and her training hasn’t simply vanished in the few months she’s been sitting in a councilor’s chair.
Lionguard training? lol The lionguard hasn’t ever been able to do anything without the help of other military groups. The best she’ll be able to do is hit a minion once then die in two hits :S
