When you see a zerg in Guild Wars, it truly is impressive to watch and experience. It’s like one second you’re fighting single monsters by yourself and suddenly this HUGE wave of people come (and I mean HUGE) and help you kill what you were trying to kill by yourself and basically destroy everything in their path. It’s like one huge giant ant army killing everything in its path.
I love it! It’s glorious! Unstoppable! I feel mighty!
It definitely makes me feel part of the group in accomplishing something.
I feel exactly the opposite. A zerg rolls in and suddenly I feel like a faceless number among hundreds. My contribution becomes diluted and meaningless. I don’t even have to use different skills or tactics of any kind, I just have to spam #1.
So tastes differ. As do games. I am a happy zerger. GW2 cares for me.
That said, I am happy that they try to introduce zerg mechanics which lead to more than “all together now! 11111111!”. The Marionette was a good attempt and the current attempt tries the same, though sadly not as successful as with the Marionette. A zerg fight where the zerg has to split strategically and comes back together would be heaven for my little zerger heart

Here’s my thoughts:
1. I don’t mind the zerg so much… but with all the sfx spam it’s really hard to see whats going on.
2. Targeting sucks and I usually lock onto a mob across the plaza or whatever instead of the one near me, and mouse-targeting is hard because of point #1.
3. Anet is obsessed with knockbacks and stuns and aoe spam. This is not action game play, this is just annoying.
4. I would like this a hell of a lot better if we didn’t have to deal with multiple hell gates + orbital strike blasts + the aforementioned stuns and whatnot. Add on to that, sometimes we get 2 orbital strikes plus hell gate bombardment on top of each other in the same spot. This is not good game design and it’s definitely not fun.
5. It’s not the zerg that I dislike, it’s the headless chickens running around (lol). Everything goes great for like 5 minutes, then people scatter and you’re lucky if you get in a clump that sticks together for the whole time.
6. I do like the open world better than the personal story parts because I’d rather be in a group of people than trying to survive a bunch of knock-back-stun-mobs, because “lol its an action game”.
It does get boring after while, game definitely needs some stuff that isn’t combat oriented or crafting (like fishing)… but that’s a whole ’nother matter.
I also want to point out that unlike other mmos I’ve played where zerg mentality on the part of the devs occured, the players in this game are quite helpful. Usually (maybe 90% of the time) if they see you downed, they will (attempt) to revive you, and then help you kill the surrounding mobs. It’s really a good feeling to see such helpfulness (despite my headless chicken comment).

Once you experience the feeling of being part of that and working together to bring down enemies, there’s no returning to solo play in an MMO open world Living Story event. It just doesn’t compare. It’s like me going back to play Skyrim…I keep asking myself where are all the other people like in Guild Wars?
I say keep the HUGE ant army rolling. I enjoy it a lot.
You’re cute, you probably still cast your skills in a meaningful manner instead of just auto-afking Wave of Wrath to collect loot while spamming shouts on recharge. Believe me, your contribution and that are the same.
Your “ant army” means the death of gameplay, simple as that.
