So I made a new character a week or so ago, and with the revelation that LA would be destroyed I opted to wait to see how that worked.
Watching the kids playing Destiny’s Edge in front of the destroyed fountain was a little weird. Watching the Vigil troops practicing marksmanship with no practice dummies, or even walls in front of them, with Scarlet’s drill in the background is just straight up freaky.
What other LA specific Personal Story instances just come weird and wrong thanks to the changes? How does the Whisper’s sneaking the girl out LA work, or the meeting of the three Orders to take back Claw Island?
I hope they have a final burnt down version of the map ready for the aftermanth. It would be silly if same wooden structures still burn 1 year later.
Could anyone post some pics? I wanna see it
Sounds really cool- it also kind of leaves no doubt that you are experiencing something not in the current timeline
Looking forward to my level 30 order Story on a new character

I went through the OoW story instance “Thrown Off Guard” yesterday afternoon. It was definitely bizarre; and also a bit broken. The weirdness of casually running through a devastated LA aside, I couldn’t take a straightforward route toward the docks on account of a flaming bridge.
Instead I had to jump off a cliff and do a little swimming. It’s a good thing this instance had a shortcut or I don’t see how it could otherwise be completed.
Still, I did get a chuckle out of arriving at the docks only to discover the ship I escorted Tybalt to was in no way seaworthy. It was partially submerged, scuttled, and had tattered sails. Those OoW accountants are stingy about expenses. XD
Hmmm… I kinda thought these would have taken place in the Lions Arch from before the invasion.
It would be no more jarring than anything described here. The idea of Destinies Edge meeting up to have a chat in the middle of an invasion seems more weird than the idea of going “into the past”.
It’s a pity, the game being able to support two versions of the same map could be very useful in certain cases.
As soon as I saw this, I realised we’ve had it backwards the whole time. The problem isn’t that the PS is locked in time, the problem is that they never designed the game to support the Living World.
This is definitely going in my final review, even if it isn’t truly related to the story.
They absolutely need to overhaul the core instancing system, so that this kind of stuff doesn’t happen anymore.
The PS takes place one year ago, back when the map wasn’t invaded and Scarlet wasn’t even on anyone’s radar. The PS instance hence shouldn’t take place on the new LA map, but on the old one.
This patch has revealed a lot about how the game systems underneath work. It’s interesting, but it also shows how early small design decisions can really ruin your plans in the future.
Now I’m excited to take my newest alt through his personal story. The meeting of Destiny’s Edge by the lion is going to be creepy as hell.

It took you that long to figure out that the livingstory was designed AFTER the initial release of the game?
Anybody playing attention should know by now that the Anet is pretty much making up the livingstory mechanics or format as they go (not talking about the story itself but how it is presented). Since it is a new experience and we are simply along for the ride.
So destroying Lion’s Arch did indeed mess up the personal story.
Even after the player base spoke of their concerns on the links between the PS and the siege of Lion’s Arch, seems Anet didn’t care. Not surprised really, I think it speaks volumes on how much they respect that portion of their own game. Oh well if ArenaNet doesn’t care then I shouldn’t either, I certainly hope the next, and last, living story update is worth a broken personal story which I will add is not really “personal,” and a destroyed Lion’s Arch.
My expectations are high seeing as they described what Scarlet is looking for to be better than an expansion. I’ve finished the PS twice and have plenty of level 50-70 characters that I stopped after their racial stories and before that meet up between Destiny’s Edge in Lion’s Arch, going to play them to see how messed up the PS is myself.
I had one of my characters do Retribution post patch. The 3 orders meet together for first time at Claw Island to see about forging a pack and they end up taking down a the Plaguebringer.
I thought the destruction in the background was awesome while the meeting was taking place, before going to Claw Island. What I found hilarious though was how after you kill the Plaguebringer everyone is saying how Lion’s Arch is no longer in danger, I just about died laughing.
Wait, they didn’t keep the undamaged Lion’s Arch map for the PS instances?
That’s just awful. I would have figured the old untouched Lion’s Arch would load for these instances… :/ I guess Anet didn’t have enough time to work something like that in with the silly pace they want the LS to be.

Nice!

Remember the tower of nightmares in kesses hills? I bet Lions Arch will also be fine after the siege.

The weird thing is, I’m pretty sure the game DOES have two versions.
There’s a reason that when you enter the attack on LA map it doesn’t show you the full world map – it’s only partial with a red border, and I think that’s because the old version of LA still exists somewhere.
I think it’s kind of disappointing that that is how they chose to do the personal story steps that take place in LA. It actually screws with the timeline quite a bit and ruins the experience for new players who aren’t really going to understand that the city isn’t meant to look like that while they’re doing the personal story.
After hearing about this, I decided to see for myself. If anet wanted to prove they’re doing “quality content,” they didn’t do a good job of it. This looks like a situation where the game is loading the wrong data.
Times like this make glad I decided to wait til after the end of season 1 before I make a new toon

..someone must be going ‘oops’…heh.
Found it odd doing Claw Island part 2 where everyone decides that they’re going to meet up in this miasmic kittenhole to start an assault. Sure, it’s the closest pier to your target, but everyone’s likely to die before you finish trading insults.
I think it’s interesting, not disappointing. I’m also not surprised once I think about it, because when I did a PS during Wintersday there was snow all over as well as decorations and the snow globe forge.
I doubt I’ll have my newest alt up to LA PS levels during this release since I’m doing a lot of event stuff on my 80’s but I’d like to try it. He’s going to be Whispers so I can try the Demi rescue in the flaming ruins.
I can remember way back when I first joined, the first Wintersday actually didn’t transfer the environment over to the Living Story. Wintersday LA outside, basic LA instnaced inside the PA. But doing it last year on an alt, they did transfer over the environments, so it was Wintersday all around. I assumed they would use a separate map of LA for the living story.
I’m just going to wait until this update is finished before I go do the living story again.
somewhere dessa is gritting her teeth z_z
that’s not how you establish a tangible chunk of the past
I wonder if in a way dungeons load the current map you are in as well. I’ve noticed that during the Claw of Jormag world boss event in Frostgorge Sound that if I’m in Honor of the Waves dungeon, I have a lot more lag and I can also hear Jormag in the background.
It’s even funnier if you’re doing the Personal Story steps that involve Risen attacking LA too. “Oh great. So we have Scarlet, Dredge, Flame Legion, Krait, Nightmare Court, pirates AND undead here. When are the Centaurs, Branded and Sons of Svanir getting here?”
I thought they would have left the old Lion’s Arch, since the PS is thought to be a year prior to the LS. I just tried the Reconnaisance PS, and had a difficult time getting everywhere. And yeah, it was funny with the risen everywhere along with the burning city around.

The Personal Story is a year – nearly two, actually – before the Living World story. Sadly, it seems that ArenaNet isn’t capable of having the personal story instances use different maps than the open world.
However, I recall Bobby Stein stating a while back (last Halloween?) that they’re in the process of making such possible – so soon enough we should see the personal story happening in old-LA/Kessex rather than modern.
Now, whether they’ve given up on it, because tbh, it’s been a kitten long time, or if it’ll be part of the future feature update coming… in a month and a half I think? Or next month? Not sure… is up in the air.
I would have thought they’d impliment it for Tower of Nightmares – if not this content.
As if the DE’s pathetic squabbling wasn’t already bad enough, now they’re casually doing it while LA burns to the ground all around them. I went into this quest with one of my alts today expecting that maybe it’d take place pre-invasion, but no. Really can’t believe this was overlooked (or, even worse, simply ignored) but I can’t say I’m suprised anymore.
Kinda takes away the immersion having Logan spitting his dummy out whilst LA burns.
