So... how do you maximize citizens saved?

So I think I see what they were going for in this update. Basically they added a “citizen’s saved” counter as a sort of high score system with more loot awarded for better efficiency so random pugs wouldn’t get frustrated like they were with the marionette but more organized players would want to more efficiently save citizens and get better rewards….
Problem is I never see that…. because honestly I have no idea how that “citizen’s saved” counter goes up. It’s not really communicated very well ingame at all. (It also doesn’t help the counter is broken on main servers right now).
So far I figured out that events save a bunch of citizens and if you walk up to citizens you can save them but the finer details are hazy. Does making sure all 3 miasma events go down save more lives then the escort events? How important is doing all of them? Do some of the rare ones give you more rewards then others? How do the events scale, which ones do you want to send small groups or which ones do you send in bigger zergs?
Personally I think the marionette pulled this scale of an event a lot better, it was harsh but it was usually obvious what you were doing wrong, like leaking champions or just failing the warden event. This event I just feel lost the whole time.
It’s still a fun event and I enjoyed it for a while but I feel the Marionette was a more well designed encounter and had a lot more staying power compared to this.

I thought that stalling the miasma just gave you more time to save citizens through events. I’m not sure if they give you rescues themselves because I wasn’t paying attention tbh. Also guessing that how well you do in x event saves so many people. No clue though. Highest I’ve gotten in an overflow was 500-600. In a main server it was almost 4,000 but I think it’s bugged and does not reset after each attempt. Unless it resets daily.

Main i believe is bugged and does not reset at 0 at the beginning of the event. In other words, you start off with the same amount from the previous attempt.

It seemed easy to figure out, actually, but I am sure there is more to learn.
Successful completion of miasma events will buy you more time. When the bar reaches full, everyone gets forced out of the instance (even if you outheal the miasma killing you). If you fail a miasma event, I believe you can kill the miasma container spewing the miasma, which probably slows the bar’s rise.
It looks like there is plenty of potential for small groups to go around to odd areas (such as the caves in the northwest, or the bar northeast of the center) and revive citizens. Once revived, they walk a short distance to a nearby whispers agent. As they arrive, the counter ticks up one. Citizens that aren’t dead sometimes have an orange icon above their head. Run up to them, press F to ‘encourage’, and they will begin walking out. The counter ticks up one. Citizens are spread out all over, at different waypoints, not near any of the events. A group of 2 could have one person kiting mobs while the other ressurects. As a thief, I could shadow refuge, res a citizen, and he’d remain stealthed and would usually have no problem getting out.
One advantage to working with a small group like this is you can search those piles of rubble lying around and get more heirlooms. Also, the veterans away from the zerg die fairly easy compared to the scaled-up vets and champs that the zergballs are trying to kill, so you’ll still get some loot.
Some of the events will give a boost to citizens saved, such as escorting the children out of the city. I’m not sure of the numbers (20-30 maybe?), and I would also assume escorting the dolyaks or other NPCs out has something similar.
Is it worth it to have 60 people escort the children out of the city, spawning champions with massive HP pools because the event scales up, while 2 miasma events fail and no one goes around ressing citizens? Probably not. Are people going to do this anyways because they want loot, and communication is hard? Probably yes.
In the marionette event, people organized by spreading out into each lane. I think something like that would work, with maybe 10-15 people at each miasma / escort event, and small parties roaming around reviving citizens. Who knows how long you can keep the instance open if you just never let a miasma event fail?
I can’t tell if the main instances are ‘bugged’ because the ‘citizens saved’ count never drops (we had over 7000 on FA main this morning), or if this is intentional and never resets as a way to track each server’s progress on their main instance.
I’m guessing you’d probably get a ton of heirlooms if you manage to save 1500.

From patch notes:
*Stopping the miasma deployment by defeating the enemy troops will allow players to rescue five nearby survivors.
-As a further bonus, if all three miasma deployments are simultaneously prevented within ten minutes, an additional 35 citizens will be saved.
*Some groups in Lion’s Arch require an armed escort in order to successfully escape. Assist them by clearing their escape route and increase the rescue tally by five.
*As the miasma nears lethal levels, champions will attack Fort Marriner and the Lion’s Shadow Inn. Elite enemies will land at the Grand Piazza. Defeating each boss event will save 10 additional citizens.

Theres another thread about this. If its true, thats really unfair. Those lucky enough to get into their servers main instance are unfairly rewarded. Unless it is only counting those saved in that time frame (ie. difference in ending number from starting number, and not from zero).

The rewards only went up to 2k. We did receive the large reward for that milestone, but anything over that does not award anything. On one run we did very well and were able to save 1.1k. Although after that main got sloppy and we were only saving about 200-400. But that happened after people noticed that you do not get any rewards past the 2k so a bunch of people I know were trying to get into overflows.
Well, split zerg.

Was in an OF last night that apparently bugged out early. Ended up saving ~3,180 citizens.
Only 25 bags for rewards. So, not really worth the extra effort.

Ahh thanks, why didn’t I see this before.

Don’t you get like a small “team effort” reward every time you hit a milestone or something? Although I will agree that is quite small.
Well, split zerg.
But how?
Do I split it into thirds to do the miasma event or make more groups for the defense groups as well? Do I assign a res all the citizens team?

The main doesn’t reset the count, but it does keep track of how many were done during that attempt. I jumped in and didn’t pay attention to the count until the end because I was having fun. I looked and noticed we had over 4000 citizens saved, but it only gave us 25 bags and no other rewards. There were no spinal shards, no huge amount of bags, etc.

No extra “team effort” rewards. Probably because we were already over the defined max threshold.
And I could have sworn I was in an OF last night when this occured, but based on reports I am hearing today it could have been the main instance.
