at the moment i dont blame the tengu for firing indiscriminately into a warzone, everything is a threat so they are taking whatever measures they can to protect themselfs

also who to say some of the miasma didnt get passed the wall and killed a few of them making them really upset. if so, they are taking their anger out of anything that gets in range, so atm it seems to be a case of “shoot first ask who’s fualt it is later”.

third is its sometimes hard to tell who’s side everyone is on, they coulda thought you were one of scarlet’s henchies if they know scarlet is behind it

inclined to agree with crosknight ^

whilst I may be slightly biased (Tengu are my absolute favourite race and I want nothing more than to play as them)
I don’t want to see the whole of Tyria hating on the Tengu….

they are merely protecting their border, with extreme prejudice (very similar to “Butcher what isn’t us.” ~Magnus the Bloody-Handed, no?)
as of yet, they oprobably don’t know who to trust
and we can be fairly certain that no actual refugees have even tried to go down there, just us players

We also have no idea what is going on inside the dominion of the winds as of yet
for all we know the entire palce could be being ransacked by destroyers
or the citizens inside could be in their own uproar about not helping LA, with a select group making the decision not to get involved

as for the other races hating them forever – I doubt this will be the case
the Charr and the Humans were warring for hundreds of years, and eventually soted themselves out
and just look at how the Asura treated the sylvari upon for meeting them

that all said and done…
this more feels like… a way to just keep us awway from the DoW rather than an actual meaningful plot-point
just a way of brushing the Tengu aside to avoid actually bringing them into the story… so we can’t read too much into it

We invaded their homeland(insert Native American reference here) and forced them to built a giant wall to keep us out. Do you really childishly think after all, they will help us?

We invaded their homeland(insert Native American reference here) and forced them to built a giant wall to keep us out. Do you really childishly think after all, they will help us?

The Dominion of the Winds isn’t their homeland (its their refuge). And the races of Tyria never invaded the Dominion of the Winds (they let the Tengu build their refuge and just left them alone). So I don’t think the Native American reference really fits when it comes to the walls of the Dominion of the Winds.

As far as Native American history references in the history of the Tengu, I think Tengu Wars in Cantha comes closest (which may be a reference to the American Indian Wars). However, the walls of the Dominion of the Winds were not a direct result of the Tengu Wars.

I think there may be a couple stronger IRL historical references with the Dominion of the Winds…

1) The Tengu were forcibly driven away from Cantha, which may be a nod to the forced expulsion of the Jewish population from Spain in 1492.

2) Due to the events that drove them from Cantha, they’re incredibly isolationist and distrustful of anyone who is non-Tengu (understandably so). So when they sought refuge in Tyria and built the Dominion of the Winds, they built a great wall to keep Tengu in and all non-Tengu out (out of a fear that the past could or would repeat itself). And the level of their isolationism that we see with the Tengu is very much akin to the Japanese isolationism (Sakoku) between 1633-1853.

Given the Tengu’s history, their isolationist attitude, and severe distrust of non-Tengu, it makes a lot of sense that what few Tengu were out-and-about in Lion’s Arch would pull-back to their safe-haven and shoot anything and anyone that isn’t Tengu.

I’m betting that the Tengu care about what’s happening in Lion’s Arch since it’s a direct threat to the Dominion of the Winds (based on the arrows, they’re obviously keeping a close eye on what is going on ). And I speculate that some Tengu may even feel a certain amount of sympathy toward what is happening to the citizens of Lion’s Arch. But given their distrust of non-Tengu and that most of their population has lived isolation for a long period of time, it is likely difficult for them to determine who is trustworthy and who isn’t in this particular conflict. Protection of the Dominion and its citizens are absolutely the top priority for the Tengu’s leadership and opening the gates for non-Tengu who they aren’t sure are trustworthy is likely viewed as just too much of a risk for such an isolationist community.

I thought I recall walking up to their wall one time, and one of them said something along the lines of “the first sign of trouble, and we’ll not hesitate to shoot you down”.

If that’s indeed true, I can’t say I really expect anything different then them… shooting down anything outside their wall.

Of course, there’s the fact that about 250 years ago people coming from Lion’s Arch used to indiscriminately hunt and kill caromi tengu for their feathers in the lands that are now the dominion of the winds, they might still have a bit of a grudge over that.

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
