Could I play with my friends please?

We enter LA and we’re all scattered accross overflows. The time for us to confirm that we’re all on overflows. We select one of us and everybody tries to join that overflow. Full. We try with another one of us. Full too. All the overflows were full. So we did the event everybody separated.

This is not friendly. At all.

I implore you, find a way to make your overflow mechanism friends-friendly.

Agreed. This isn’t the most memorable event, but it’s not bad as far as zerg-fests go. I’m at peace with that.

What I don’t like is that the event immediately starts with an RNG overflow. There is 0 time to really coordinate commanders and parties. I also cannot play with people I want to play with.

Pick your poison
1.) Current overflow system where there is only 200 people on the map but no network lag

2.) Proposed overflow system where there is an unlimited number of people on the map, with intense network lag, making it impossible to accomplish anything.

If you wait a moment 9/10 times the overflow they were in will have room. My party of 5 were put in random overflows and we eventually got in the same overflow easily by just waiting 5 minutes into the event.

Patience, I believe A-Net did it so that overflows will max out so people will have enough players to get to 1500~ refugees saves.

I noticed this, too. It reminded me of the party/overflow system when the game was first released. ArenaNet’s dev team improved that dramatically and quickly so I’m pretty confident that by the time this event ends we should usually be able to play with the people in our party.

Would you prefer to have only 1 map per server, and a queue line to get in?

The only other solution to your problem is to convince thousands of players to stop doing a popular farming event. Tell them your BL in WvW is in trouble, and maybe they’ll leave to defend it.

Everybody: you can fix the problem with overflows without removing overflows. You do it the same way Personal Stories are kicked off. You have this option:

Join in Lion’s Arch (Overflow) <—- exists now

Instead of just saying the world is full, it pops up a new option: Invite Party to Overflow

This pops up a box (like the one for the Personal Story) that lets each party member accept an invite. Everybody who accepts is moved simultaneously to an overflow with room for them.

It’s not IMPOSSIBLE to solve. There are more than 2 options (overflows that split party and queues.) Be a little more creative here.

Are you playing the same game I am?

I played for 5 hours after the patch yesterday and experienced no lag. This was in a TS of over 200 people and I read no complaints on map chat. In fact, a lot of people on TS gave credit for Anet that this didn’t turn out like the Karka invasion.

Unless you are specifically referring to the network lag that happened for the past 2 weeks – that is an entirely different issue that is of no fault from Anet.

It is very, very unlikely that all overflows were full. Unless you were there 10 minutes before the event finished…
If you are all there in time, there is no way that overflows would be full so fast. That’s how overflow maps work. So yeah… pay attention next time.

I went through the portal at the same time as my girlfriend. Immediately when we loaded, I tried to join on her. Full. Then she tried to join on me. Full.

The overflows were filling within 10-15 seconds of creation, as best as I can tell.

Sounds nice in theory but you are ignoring the repercussions from this. For one, each overflow acts as a server. The more servers, the more resources and costs involved. If you do not include a cap on the number of overflows that can be created, then this can be abused to bring down the game.

And we are also forgetting about the bots who would create their own private overflow. Out of sight = out of mind.

Also since you’re comparing districts to over flows which are basically the same thing, except you can’t choose what overflow you wind up in then there could be a hypothetical over flow with 5 people. So that renders that invalid. The player base is already spread out with overflows, allowing you to choose your overflow would at least allow guilds and parties to work together.

I fail to see how this increases server costs or is any more of a problem with botting, because overflows stay open as long as players are in them just like a District would.

Districts are overflows that you can choose.

How does this increase server costs? Because each overflow is considered a map on a server. They need to allocate resources for this. And how are overflows/districts going to be created? Fixed number? Unlimited? This can be abused.

And it will be a problem for botting. Think about it.

Let’s say you are a major botting tycoon that wants to keep characters undisturbed. You would create your own district and invite hundreds of your bot accounts to it. This way you can fill your own district and not allow any non-botters in there.

Nope! Let me elaborate: “Everybody who accepts is moved simultaneously to an overflow with room for them.”

Here’s the priority:

1. Existing overflows with room for party
2. New overflow created if #1 is not possible

This means that overflows will still fill up, people don’t create their own overflows. It just moves you to one with room. An overflow is only created if there are no overflows with room.

I’m fine with overflows, really. That’s fine.

I just wish the overflow "selection process went like this:

1. Main server is “soft capped” → Create overflow
2. Overflow first fills with people from your home server and/or party members
3. Overflow continues to fill with people from your home server/party members until full → Create new overflow
4. People from other servers are added to your home server overflows as the “query” process cannot find people who fit previous requirements.

But I’ll take what I can get and keep trying to get into the same instance as my husband.

As it stands though there is no technical difference between what we have now (overflows) and what I am advocating which is the ability to choose which overflow you wind up in.
Districts at least do not allow more players to enter once the amount of players in the district reaches a certain point when all players are gone the district is removed.

Not everyone can pile into the same instance, there’s technical limitations to that. They either have to use overflows or districts or create smaller instanced content.

Agree with OP. If we form a party in, say, Gendarren, it’d be nice to end up all in the same overflow. This LS event really benefits from 5-man teams roaming and being able to do that with friends would be the hotness.

To quote myself

If you don’t understand how Overflows work, I’ll give a quick rundown for you. Each server has a finite amount of slots for players to take up. Main servers, Overflow servers, all the same. Each can hold between 100 to 150 players. Now, if a server has more players than can fit into a single map, they are then instantly placed into a duplicate map called an Overflow.

In your case, there are more than the max amount of players wanting to do a popular event at the same time. Because of this, you’re placed into the same map, albeit on a different server. This is the better alternative to having a single map, and a queue to wait to get in.

Technology limits the amount of people you can hold on a server at a time. Sure you could have 1,000 people on the same map. Not sure you’ll like having 1 FPS, with a 20 second lag though.

But even if you increase the max amount of players per map, if you’re on a popular server, there are bound to be players who can’t get in. Case in point – Deso. If you increase the map size to 500, what’s not to say that 700 people want to play?

Once you learn to think beyond yourself, and see the situation from a different perspective, you’ll appreciate the fact that there is a limit per map. Just go do a 3-way Stone Mist battle with all servers bringing full groups into a small space, and you’ll see what I mean. And that’s only an estimated 240 people total.

Overflows were common place on Desolation before guesting was even possible. It’s a very high population server (both according to the description and in reality – a lot of people have that as their home server and log in regularly).

With this event encouraging everyone to head into the same map all at the same time it’s hardly surprising that it goes to overflow.

I doubt it would be due to people guesting because there’s not really any reason to guest to a specific server for this event. It’s not like it’s especially difficult to get the achievements, and the ones that people are struggling with it’s because they’re bugged. Considering Deso is one of the bugged servers it’s more likely people are guesting elsewhere.

Finally I’ve played this event on Deso but also guested to 3 other EU servers trying to avoid lag and disconnect issues (it didn’t work) and all of them have gone to overflow. You’ve got 3 maps full of people trying to get into one map, all at the same time. They’re not all going to fit so it’s inevitable.

What do you suggest as an alternative?

There’s only two alternatives I know of, and neither of them seems like an improvement to me:

1) Queues like other games use. If the map is full instead of playing in an overflow you get held on the loading screen unable to play at all until a space opens up.

2) Let everyone into the map. Sooner or later you’ll hit the limits of what either your computer or the server can handle and one or both will crash. Until then you’ll have extremely low FPS, lag and so many people running around that even without that it’s impossible to do enough damage to an enemy for it to count for anything before they’re killed.

My problems with the overflows is …why do we even have home worlds? Most events unless lucky your playing with mixxed servers. Its hard to get the party your already in on the same Overflow let alone most of your guild. Disticts were the way to go as in GW1. Or why not overflows of the main containing people of the same home server which is just the same as the districts. Then if those get filled mix match the servers.

Step 4 The over flow you are trying to join is full.

That means you didn’t taxi fast enough to join. Just wait to try on the next event. If you have 300 people trying to get into a map that holds only 150, you’re guaranteed to have upset players.

Which is exactly the problem here, and it shouldn’t be. What’s the point of partying up if you can’t play major events together?

Allow me to explain how an Overflow works. Each map can only hold a finite amount of players (estimated between 100 to 150). When that map fills, a new one is created. It’s a duplicate of the map you’re trying to get into, and is called an Overflow server.

So if you have 300 guildies trying to get into a map that can only hold 150 players, that means you have upset people who can’t play with each other. To put it in better perspective, if you have 151 guildies, and the map can only hold 150, then you’ll have that lone person who can’t play.

Edit – this is the inherent limitations of the game. If there’s a max ceiling, you can’t go beyond it. Even Anet Devs who play with our Guild can’t bypass that limit. It’s First Come, First Served.

I feel you, OP.

First, I love this update so far. Origins of Madness and Escape from LA have really just hit it out of the park for me, and I feel like feedback is getting to the devs. Each LS update is usually better than the last, which is all I ever really hoped for. <3 so wonderful.

My concern this time is that I can’t play with the person I’m sitting in the same room with. My boyfriend and I were in a group together with three other people, we did the entry event, I portaled in and… everyone of us got placed into a different overflow. Each one of us tried to “join” one of the four other members only to receive “full overflow” messages. We never had that problem in Marionette; one of us could almost always join the other (though of course if one of us got into main they didn’t want to, heh). I don’t care if it’s my server’s main instance or an OF, I just want to play with my group.

I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten into an overflow with him the first time I tried the event, because the three times after I was all alone but for the randoms I was placed with. I don’t mind randoms! I love the learning and teaching, and don’t mind meeting new people. In fact, the other players in our group who were separated from us were randoms we met while waiting for the entry event! We thought we were going to have an opportunity to hang out with new people, only to be immediately split.

Is it too much to ask that if I go in with a group, the game shoves me in an instance with them? Why can’t we choose districts like in GW1? The usual rhetorical questions, I suppose.

This is sort of true as there was no home worlds. That and Guilds would select a certain District and All meet there with very little effort. My Guild has Screen shots of the entire guild in one area. Try doing this with the current overflow system as of now its hard just keeping your party of 5 in the same map!

I do believe you could pick your district…

Do wonder if the servers could handle spawning a guild specific overflow, and prioritize putting people from that specific guild there first.

I know how over flow works if you’d bother to actually read my other posts in this thread you might have noticed that I get the concept and I even understand that there’s a technical limitation that requires an overflow solution. You can’t have 500 players in a map and expect there not to be a latency issue. If you bothered to read the link explaining districts you’d know that districts work just like overflows with one key difference you can choose a District and you have to get lucky with an overflow. What I am suggesting is that the players should have the ability to choose which overflow they want to meet up in as new ones are spawned. There’s no difference between the systems other than the ability to choose what instance you go into.

You could easily pick a different District in GW1. And those were shared by all of the same regions. American, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, European, etc. In GW2, it takes more effort, but you can spawn a new, fresh Overflow, and taxi people there.
