I wonder why they got removed. Not if it was announced or who’s fault it is for missing it, there are other topics for that. I just wonder why were they removed right after event ends? I can think of a reason why they would stay a little longer – during event ppl want to spend their time farming tokens and now they would have time to think on how to spend it.

People will tell you:
1. “it’s part of the story…it would make no sense for them to stick around.”
2. Because anet said so, and it would somehow hurt the value of my items if you were able to spend the things you earned.

I get that the LA event is over, but in a real world, a lot of things would still be missing after a huge disaster like what happened in LA. There is a missing persons bulletin board as of the new patch….people are still missing, but no one’s belongings are? Unlikely.

Why is it always someone’s fault when this NON recurring event has been running nearly a month and folk don’t think to ASK in Map Chat or look or ask on forums if certain things that are being collected are going to continue???

The answer to your question is precedence. There was a vendor you could trade in candy corn and zaitaffy forever. You could still trade in your fortune scraps to the BL weapons dude. For about a month after Christmas, you could still turn in wintersday collectibles. There was no reason to ask because there was a precedence that for event items, you’d still be able to turn them in after the fact.

Totally missing the point. The thread specifically NOT about reading the news of when they got removed. The OP is aware that they were getting removed, he specifically wants to know the rationale of why they were removed.

Is it for RP reasons? Balance reasons? Poor planning? Who knows.

Those are for RECURRING events this is a NON RECURRING event. Pretty much vendors for non recurring events go away and you are out of luck if you didn’t do what you needed to before the event was over. Recurring events mean those items most likely will be available again in the future. If you missed out it was because you did not check, either in map chat or or forums if you were not sure. Very sorry if you didn’t but it is on those who did not do that not an, “Oh, I screwed up so you should make it right!” kind of thing.

But you keeping on trying to change it for another disscusion about how it should be advertised or about bringing them back or not. Please stay on the topic.

Whoa there buddy, no need to be so hostile. No one in this thread has used the word “fault,”, however, I do feel that Anet should put these things in the launcher announcements or elsewhere in game. It would eliminate 90% of the complaints. I also feel that at least one belongings/heirloom vendor would fit well into the story at this point. How can so many people still be missing, but no one’s belongings are?

I am a new player; this was the second LS update I have played through. I was surprised at this development, but I will take it as a lesson learned. I will read the forums from now on. I don’t understand the animosity some of you are expressing towards the ignorant.

I’m interested to know as well. I’ve never before felt like it’s been a requirement to read this game’s forum to enjoy the it, and I always loved how compatible it was for my casual playstyle.

I’m rather disappointed about the loss, but if Arena Net can provide a good reason for removing the merchants, it would be much appreciated.

Because looting is now a crime. Before this update you were able to loot lost heirlooms and found belongings then trade them for items of value. Now we are supposed to dislike the NPC looters for doing the same thing.

I agree, I’d love to know why the vendors just packed up shop and left when LA was safe.

Also, I was actually completely unaware that the vendors were going away until I went to one of the camps and found only a standard kit/gathering tool merchant. But I shant feed the trolls.

You are correct, but it’s a semantics issue. What you describe isn’t much different from looting. The player didn’t own the heirlooms or found belongings, they looted them. It’s true the player didn’t keep them for themselves, they traded them for goods (presumably back to the original owners, but we didn’t hand their belongings back to them, we charged for them just like a looter will do on the black market).

Only now I am being told to throw these items away rather than try and find their rightful owner? That makes even less sense from a lore perspective! The items are already collected. I’m not asking to do more looting, just return what I already have in my possession. Please ANET, let us give the lost possessions back to their rightful owners! (and if we get a little something back in return…bonus!)

;)

Truthfully I don’t have much left to turn in, but for the people that do, I think it is only right that ANET include these things with the new bladeshard vendor that is coming.

Interesting idea. Maybe the vendors were realy from the black market, and just keeping the most valuable stuff for themselves. And now that things are getting calmer after battle they are afraid that someone would look closer at their work, so they flee and hide away.

Now that would have been a fun way to in-game tell people they were leaving. Have the Lions-guard wandering around asking questions and saying “the minute We catch those vendors, we are shutting down their operation” With them getting closer and closer…they could have even been seen talking to the vendors on the last day telling them “by tomorrow, you guys will be locked up in prison for a long time.”

I love creative ways to tell game-development.

I think that 2 is the explanation as to why some folks are hitting every thread posted on this saying “Why didn’t you stop playing to randomly ask in chat if your loot was going to spoil?”

Part “I got mine, screw you for not taking your gaming seriously enough to read every dev post” and part “If you lose all that loot, you’ll have to buy my stuff in auction…”

People will tell you:
1. “it’s part of the story…it would make no sense for them to stick around.”

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/escape/Blade-shards-and-found-belongings-really/first#post3777561 My thread about basically the same thing, except this one was much better worded. Just to quote myself from that thread:

Addendum: for reasons why some people might hold onto the special tokens until the event ends, well, here’s mine.

3. It’s just nice to go buy things when you know exactly how much you have to spend. I hate to buy things when the stuff is still dropping cause that easily makes one go “oohh I’ll just spend all of this stuff now and be done with it” and then bamm – you find yourself with another 100 tokens the next day.
4. As pointed out above, someone may still have been running the event when the patch went up, which naturally gives no time to turn any leftovers in. This wasn’t an issue in Tower of Nightmares: the tri-colors could still be used two weeks later, but they could only be obtained from the vendor. Same for Marionette: cyphers could still be used like a month after, but could no longer be obtained.

Related to #3, what somebody said: people are busy farming during the event. After the event they’re more likely to dig through their bags thoroughly.

But basically what I’m saying: any argument about this being a one-time event while Dragon Bash/Halloween/Wintersday is a recurring one is rendered invalid by how they handled Cyphers and Tri-colors.

Check in map chat you say? There were ppl telling me before 3/18 that there would be no glory vendors anymore and that i should spend all glory right away. And look, there still are glory vendors. So no i dont ask in map chat. And no i dont have half a day to search some forum for some npc sry.

ARENANET should keep these kind of npcs for few more days EVERYTIME some event ends.

ITS SIMPLY NOT FAIR WHEN YOU STILL CAN FARM BELONGINGS AND MINUTE LATER YOU DONT HAVE AN OPTION TO SPEND IT BECAUSE OF NEW UPDATE.

Thank you all for your posts, but please try to restrain from commenting if ppl should check the forums for anouncements or not.
So for now i think we saw some ideas here and other threads why vendors got removed.
Let’s summarize:
1. “it’s part of the story…it would make no sense for them to stick around.” – but as stated before why would ppl just stop want to get their belongings right after the battle.
2 “because it hurt value of items you gathered” – most of the things were account bound so that one is bad too.
3 “it was non-recuring event and they always dissapear like that” – as said somewhere already some other non recuring events vendor stays longer (also in other games it’s common for event vendors to stay a little longer for ppl to cash in leftovers)
4 “vendos were actually from black market and they wanted to dissapear now that things are calm and it’s likely that some guard would look closer at their activity” – my favorite one, haven’t figure out how to overthrow that one yet
5 “ANet will introduce a vendor for blade shards soon and they dont want ppl to just cash in all of their shards now” – that may make sense for blade shards, but not about found belongings, over wich we have no info at all; and this discussion is more about belongings

So what do You think? Any other interesting ideas? Lorewise or other?

Dang, conspiracy much?

One simple thing they could have done is have all the update info posted on front page or launcher, and people will be directly into the forum through the links, thus increasing the interactivity. And all the missing-out can be prevented.

Great, so they hid that bit in another forum announcement that is incredibly easy to overlook.

None of the merchants said anything about leaving.

There was no in-game indication or any logical reason that people would no longer need their belongings in the aftermath.

They could have at least put it in the launcher announcements.

Was it seriously so hard to do in one of the dozen updates they made?

I literally have thousands of belongings now with nothing do with them. They better give us the option to trade them to the new merchant or something.

If heirlooms and belongings can no longer be obtained, keeping the vendors available for some time after the event is over doesn’t at all seem unreasonable to me. This is not a case of people being able to farm them after the fact and greatly devalue the rewards. And as has been pointed out, with Lion’s Arch still in ruins and the recovery going to take some time, there is nothing immersion-breaking about somebody accepting found heirlooms and belongings.

ANet obviously sees some benefit to promoting divisiveness between those players that are really into them and their game — those play a lot, follow them on social media, inhale all the news that gets released about the game — and those for whom GW2 is just the game they currently enjoy logging in and playing. The entire limited-time-only aspect of nearly everything they did for the last year speaks directly to that. Make the hardcore fans feel special, because that’s where your bread is buttered. Everyone else doesn’t really matter. In fact, you’re more trouble than whatever you’re spending on the game is worth.

ETA: I turned in all of my heirlooms and belongings because I knew they were being removed. I happen to strongly sympathize with those who feel they should have been kept available.

Conspiracy theory just for fun: Vendors were removed with minimal notice as a deflationary measure. By instantly turning items that had value (found belongings and heirlooms) into items that have no value, the net amount of value in the economy is reduced. The more of these items still in circulation when the change happens, the more pronounced its effect. Providing minimal notice that this change will happen ensures that more items will go unredeemed than if more obvious notice was given. Providing notice only on the forums, which we are repeatedly told by Anet themselves are visited only by a very small fraction of the total player base, is the best way to technically provide notice while having it seen by as few eyes as possible.

Note: I don’t actually believe this, but it sure makes for an entertaining story.

Personally, I would prefer to play the game without having to check the forums to keep up to date with emergent, relevant information. Furthermore, I agree with the point made that asking for information in map chat is often misleading or wrong.

I do generally read the links that are posted in the launcher (which includes all release notes), I just don’t want to have to chronically peruse the forums to keep current with other, game impacting and potentially detrimental changes.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask that pertinent, time-sensitive information such as this be made available within the game client. However, I understand that ArenaNet owns the content and can choose to present it however they want.

In the end though, these decisions have consequences. Kitten people off enough and they will spend their time and money elsewhere.

While I agree that it would be better if they added the information in a link on the launcher itself, but be realistic. There’s FEWER people that read the launcher than the forums. Most people simply have “Autoplay” checked and launch the game and then step away from the computer to come back to the screen asking to choose a character.

Putting a link in the launcher would have changed nothing at all.

Fine. I mentioned it only because it would require virtually no additional effort on ANet’s part and would serve to increase (however minimally) the number of people who might see it. My personally preferred option would be for them to deploy it through the game client itself – which likely would require a LOT more effort.
