Just a shot in the dark (and a long shot at that), but if LA is attacked, will the Tengu get involved. Maybe even become playable? Dominion of the Wind does sit right beside LA….
Yuki Honestcrest does say: "We must soon determine with whom we will fight and with whom we will ally."

I sure hope so. I’ve been waiting and hoping for Tengu to be playable since the game came out.
At the least, it might be the first step to it.
But I fear Scarlet might need to unleash more than her regular minions to get the Tengu to respond.. granted, I hope I’m wrong with that..

I think that if this update was going to bring the Tengu, ANet would be announcing that all over the internet. A new playable race is a big thing (even if some ESO fans won’t admit it). I think we will get in an awkward situation where everybody is trying to escape from Scarlet’s army and the Tengu won’t let refugees into their city, leaving them to die in Lion’s Arch.

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but DoW actually does not border Lion’s Arch.
“The Shuttered Gate in Lion’s Arch is said by its tengu guards to lead to the Dominion of Winds, but isn’t likely to lead directly there as Lion’s Arch is not directly next to the Dominion of Winds”
Also if you look at the map the Wiki provides it shows that the two are no closer to each other than Lion’s Arch is to the Priory or DoW is to The Grove.

Like Gabby above said, I just don’t see them releasing a new race/zones without some leaked info coming out weeks if not months ahead.
An awesome thought that I’d love to see happen, but it is based on some false info and wishful thinking.
Tengu will be a playable race. That’s not a suspection, that’s a fact.
But not in next two patches. And not in feature patch. They’ll be added with Expansion, probably linked with Primordus.
And even if we don’t see opening of the gates in LA, I’m sure there will be some reaction. According to wiki, Scarlet already tried “alliance” between largos and tengu…and failed, for the first time.
Why will the Tengu be playable?:
-Lore – Compared to other “lesser” races, only dwarves come close. But dwarves are past now and Tengu are becoming more and more “major” race.
-In-game directions – Tengu are already trying to build an Asuran Portalin Caledon Forest. As OP mentioned, some suggest alliance. There are mentions about Primordus minions infecting Dominion of Winds and Wiki and logic suggest that after death of Zhaitan, Tengu look at the rest of Tyria with more interest. Remember, they had to get through Zhaitan forces when they came to Tyria and Sanctum Ray, now they’re dealing with Primordus.
-There are four districts, four winds in DoW, which perfectly fits character creation. Remember, every race has one step of PS creation when we have couple choices, often 4 (Sylvari, Norn).
-Tengu were about to be playable at release, but they were cut off from game release plans due to lack of time
-New MMOs are coming… We know that ANet has been working on “big projects” for over a year now. I smell an expansion in summer.
Only thing that really holds fast release of Tengu currently are their models. Atm, they share skeleton, animations etc. with Charr and it will be changed.

That most certainly is NOT a fact. You can speculate or rationalize all you want, but there is absolutely zero confirmation the tengu will ever be a playable race.

Well the Tengus are the wild card here and could really make a difference. Scarlet doesn’t seem to consider them in her masterplan and according to their proximity to Lion’s Arch, they could play a major role in future events. They could decide to shelter Lion’s Arch refugees in Dominion of the Winds if LA is destroyed or be the one to finally break the siege, which would be an awesome way to introduce them officially to the community. And, since I believe the Grove could be Scarlet ultimate/real target (see the Theory Crafting Post on the Story and Lore forum), they could also shelter the surviving sylvaris until they find a new home/new tree.

Why is everyone so eager to play a race mirrored after chickens? ;S

because i liked my phoenix back in guild wars 1. Because the internet is full of furry maniac who are phantasming over blaziken and because running a bird archer or a tengu blademaster likely is the dream of a lot of people around here… If you bring in the tengu pls dont forget to give them katana and other asiatic weapon as their tier for the people pleasure, we still miss canthan weapon style a lot.
Because Tengu have good, well-written story. Because it’s not obvious that they’re good guys who have some heroic destination to slay a lizard. No. In fact, they have more grim, adult story.
Let me mention that before Tengu Wars, one of the reasons why humans went to war against Tengu was because Tengu literally ate population of a human village. Tengu Wars lasted for a long time, involving much bloodshed. And when finally finished, Tengu expected a betrayal from humans…
Now compare it to recent GW2 story.
Also, Tengu were huge part of Cantha story of GW1, beloved expansion of so many players. It was probably the first and last game of this type which had so good Asian-themed story, totally over MoP poor story of regular anime crap. Factions story was actually more mature, interesting. Locations were beautiful and music…. Let’s say many, many people loved Factions soundtrack, including me. So everything even remotely related to Factions and Cantha will always attract GW1 players.
Also, Tengu share some connections with archetype of Samurai, Bushido. They may be relentless, merciless and brutal, but most of them care about honor and freedom.

I would be surprised to see Tengu as a race TBH. Right now, Charr are the least played race. They have the biggest issues with armor integration. They have the lions share of the clipping issues. Their models limit features that could otherwise be added to the game (cloaks).
That is despite there being a Charr protagonist in EoTn, the novels and Destiny’s Edge and a marketing push towards playable charr with more merch and promotional material than any other race.
If their first attempt at a beast race flopped, even with all of the exposure, and is more of a hindrance in the game than it’s worth popularity wise, then why would they try a lesser known, beast race post launch that will have identical issues?
The original Tengu/Avicara would have been much better. They were more humanoid and more defined. The new ones are slouching, scrawny, chicken looking nightmare fuel. I can’t see their new incarnation being any more popular than the least popular race in the game that they share a base framework with.
As I said, Tengu model is not ready yet. If you look at it, it’s Charr skeleton and behaviour model without wet sounds.
They share almost the same standing position, same gestures. Their faces are also not finished or better detailed. I assume current model is close to final one, but it’s not final for 100%.
It is said that in Gw2 tengu are rather “slim”, not as bulky as in GW1 but who knows.
Keep in mind, changes to model can be introduced in one update/expansion, it doesn’t have to evolve in-game.
Offtop: If you’re not yet interested in Tengu, listen to this remixed soundtrack of one of GW2 OST pieces – “The Tengu Wall”

This new update is the perfect opportunity to have the LA citizens taking refuge into the nearest city, the Dominion of the Winds. But knowing that Anet and NCsoft are allergic with Canthan arhitecture, we won’t see it.

I can’t wait for the relentless posts/screenshots about clipping if the Tengu become a playable race.

I have no idea, I dont want to be bigbird. I’d say leave that sort of things to other games. The asura and charr are borderline weird to me.
