Preface: I’m still enjoying the puppy (puppies > kittens) out of GW2, so don’t take this criticism on one specific aspect of the game as a gripe about the game in its entirety. I <3 ANet!

- Anyway -

I (playing a melee guardian – Hammer and Mace/Torch… no ranged EZ Mode for me!) did the Defeat the giant assaulting the Town of Nageling event in Diessa Plateau last night… talk about a snore-fest. He has two mechanics: a stomp that hit for about half my hp with a knockback and cripple, and a fear shout that didn’t do damage. (Speaking of which… got flashbacks to the Kol event in Harathi…)

Ok, easy enough – dodge/block the stomps (that is, unless my dodge bugs out and I get hit anyway) and suck up the fears….

… for a good ten minutes. While the 8-12 people with me whittled away his obscene health pool.

Do we really need to repeat the same, easy pattern over and over for ten minutes for a little bit of xp, karma, and copper? This seems to be the general idea for champion mobs (with a few exceptions… some of the meta event bosses are pretty cool), and just seems like lazy design to me. Have Mr. Giant toss a rock at the folks standing at range every so often. Make some buildings destructible so that we have to take him down in a certain amount of time (or each building that remains results in a unique merchant). I don’t know… something that isn’t dodge rolling every several seconds?

I play as an explosive engineer (grenades/bombs). Majority of the time Im range, and I noticed he does throw rocks at range, and also does a ground traveling knockdown (Like warriors off-hand mace Tremor). The giant will use the fear/weaken and stomp though if I run in with bombs if I am his target.
People still have a hard time dodging the stomp though I have noticed while throwing my grenades… oh well

Hm… I was constantly in melee range – maybe that’s why I didn’t see him do anything other than his one-foot stomp. Although I also kind of zoned out after about a minute of doing the same thing over and over, so I might have missed it. :P

Yes but your point is still valid. The reward for fighting him is so small and pathetic most people don’t stop to fight him. People will hear he is up in the zone and won’t bother to fight because you can do things to earn that same amount of exp, karma, and money in 1/4 of the time or even quicker.

This was one of the most anti-climactic events I’ve done in the game. You have this massive boss, with tons of HP, that takes FOREVER to kill! … and no chest at the end.

Over 1/2 the people after the event said “Where’s the chest???” and they are right. If you spend that much time fighting an event boss, there should at least be a small chest at the end.

I also agree that the Giant could do more attacks. What would really be cool is if he summoned “pets” of sort so that you get a little variety in the never ending battle. Also would help get a little loot into the battle as well as make it more challenging.

I agree this guy needs a chest to drop at the end. as do other boss fights.

Yeah, I fought this guy three times (once as melee, twice as ranged), and while melee is actually far more exciting (I get to actually DODGE something! I can set my ranger’s auto-attack on this fight and go make a sandwich.), the lack of reward after such a long and boring fight is a total buzzkill.

Personally, I would rather do an event because it’s a blast to play; but if you’re going to create boring and monotonous fights that put me to sleep, at least tack on a reward at the end so that I don’t actively avoid the event when it pops.

Personally, I would rather do an event because it’s a blast to play; but if you’re going to create boring and monotonous fights that put me to sleep, at least tack on a reward at the end so that I don’t actively avoid the event when it pops.

I think this is the big thing. I personally don’t really care too much about rewards – I want to play the game to have fun! Sure, tossing in a chest with all sorts of great items and lots of gold at least gives some sort of an incentive to pound on the same mob for 5-10 minutes, but it’s still not fun.

If they want to keep this sort of unworthy champion events, at least they need to provide achievement entries for each of them. There are only a few boss achievements but we don’t even know what to do from the titles. Currently spending 30 minutes trying to kill a champion only gives you +1 in your total event counts, which can be obtained much more easily with anything else within 30 seconds.

Heh… so I randomly saw this event start last night when I followed the separatists to Nageling. No way in hell the Underworld was I going to do it again. Then like 15-20 minutes later, I just had to laugh when some people asked if anyone was doing it and map chat was full of people politely declining since it’s just not fun.

I like to solo this boss for fun whenever hes up, and it doesnt take me 10mins but im also lvl 80 with decent gear, and im a war. But i do agree, for events that have champ bosses in them there should definitely be a better reward than 243 karma and 1 silver, be it a type of chest based on how hard the fight is, or just a kitten increase in karma and silver awarded. Something needs to be done.

Well, I’ve to point out one thing about Nageling giant.
He’s a giant, and I’m having hard time to find easy giants to kill for my 1000 kills. (Giant Slayer)
