I took a bit of a break from the game. When I was playing before, people were pretty spread across all content. Now, I notice some very obvious trends. Some events seem to be popular, with players camping out just waiting for them (eg pretty well all of Queensdale!); others are so un-popular, I have not seen them done once in the past few weeks (eg Krait Blood Witch). It is not even level-based, as I would have guessed. In fact, I see more high-level players doing low-level events than I do high-level events.

What are the super popular events, and why do people emphasize them so much? What are the events to avoid at all costs, and why?

Even with the downscaling, low level mobs die faster than the equivalent in higher level zones.

Well, a safe bet is that events with a daily bonus chest (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bonus_chest#Bonus_Chest) are rather popular. There tend to be groups hopping around from one to the next.

People don’t do Krait Blood Witch imo because: it takes longer to kill her; greater risk of death and damaged armor; a lot of people seem to dislike underwater combat; and if you die and try to return, you have to aggro multiple Veterans, some of whom summon minions.

In general, people are doing the events that are short, are near uncontested WP’s, which can be done quickly and which are can be redone in short order. Thus, Troll, Oak, Boar and Wasp in Queensdale get done, whereas the Krait Witch in Kessex or the one in Timberline Falls don’t.

Also, people gravitate to the meta events (Shadow Behemoth in Queensdale, Jungle Wurm in Caledon, Fire Elemental in Metrica, Shatterer in Blazeridge Steppes, Teqatl in Sparkfly Fen — all of which offer a guaranteed rare item once/day to characters level 39+ — which are more rewarding for the time spent.

a lot of people seem to dislike underwater combat

Because they have to use one or two different weapons, and a more limited range of utilities, than on land. Usually this means that whenever you go underwater your build breaks badly.

Never mind that depth perception goes out the window without a common reference plane (ground).

Also, leaching is even buggier underwater than it is on land.

I assume you mean leashing.

I can see that about builds. Bunker ele is great with dagger/dagger, but trident — not so much.

Basically, the average player doesn’t like challenge and would rather take the quickest and easiest route to the “end game” so they can whine and cry about how there’s nothing else to do. Er, that’s also quick and easy.

I think it’s more about risk vs reward. The high-end zones have almost been completely stripped of loot (and I can’t believe ANY dev would do that to their own game!) so people flock to whatever is the next best thing. If you get tired of running CoF1, you have world bosses that are stupidly easy to kill and guarantee a rare.

If people really wanted the easiest route, they would play another game. There are too many split second decisions in this game to be considered “easy”. As much as people wish to claim that it is, starting areas are the only place I can auto-attack mobs and go afk with little worry. Even then, I can’t do that to all mobs or even a group of 3+. However, there are other MMOs where I can auto-attack, actually get up and use the bathroom and then come back to finish fighting. That is what I consider easy.
