Something wrong with Balthazar?
This isn’t limited to Balthazar. It also happens to Warmaster Chan during the Arah chain.
The problem is that one of the mobs (Risen Noble I believe) casts an aoe that does massive damage.
When you have a bunch of these being placed on NPC’s, they pretty much die in 1-2 seconds. Players as well.
It’s so ridiculously overpowered that it’s foolish to think it’s intended – it will get fixed shortly, just like how Grenth immediately after the January patch was fixed.
At first I thought the damage was because of the nearby statues, which seemed like a genius idea! If you wanted to take out Arah, you had to take out all the other temples first! But unfortunately, that’s not the case.

We were having a similar problem with Jonez during the Grenth run. It doesn’t happen very often, but rarely when we have a very large group a bunch of those risen flesh knights spawn and just murder Jonez with that ground spell they have. It doesn’t happen very often at all but when it does it’s a shocker and there’s not much you can do about it. He goes down in like 2 seconds it seems.

That has been happening ever since release – the trick is to spam, put aegis and heals right away. I believe it’s the second wave of those knights.

Good to know Vol. Thanks!
here’s my cent, today i tryed to do balthazar escort 5 times and all of thos tryes was a failure; no manner of the group size the problem i noticed was always the same, at the first “right turn” of the pact forces after a spawn of some mobs with 2/3 veterans a big wave of mobs spawn beneath the pact forces and immediatly after spawn they cast aoes (erupion like size) on the rearguard of the escort wiping them instantly causing a loss of morale of 60/80% at least in 3 seconds or less causing the event to fail when the pact forces arrives at the stairs of the temple due the huge amount of mobs
We ran into this problem last night (in fact, I was just coming to the forum to ask about it). During the early part of the “Help the Pact reach the Altar of Betrayal before their morale is depleted” event everything seemed to be going smoothly and then suddenly, in probably less than two seconds, a half-dozen players and all the NPCs went from fully alive to dead (and the event immediately failed). I’m not even sure what happened.
It’s a little ridiculous to have things go south that quickly for the amount of effort put into the chain up to that point.
Well, I did end up having a success yesterday, but that was because we had a ginormous zerg (50+ people) at the event so things were dying fast enough that we could keep up with the ginormous pact losses in those areas. Barely. We reached the altar with like 10% morale left and it was all drained in those two areas where the enemies spam AoE all over the place.
EDIT: Problem is here:
“Updated skillsets for several krait and undead creatures to make them more entertaining to fight.”
Looks like some of those “updated” skills for undead are making Balth and Arah chains in Orr almost impossible to complete. Perhaps they should be reverted for now until Anet can come up with a better solution that doesn’t screw these events up?

Maybe since the beefed up the enemies they could just beef up the npcs a bit.
Or reduce the AoE spam in those events by a large margin. Those are what kills everyone.
Seriously, 20+ AoEs scattered on the ground at once during an NPC escort isn’t right.

It’s not the # of Aoe’s, it’s the damage you get from them. It’s ridiculously high that it has to be bugged.

as experiment i sacrificed myself to lure all the aoes at the first morale spike and it actually worked (failed anyways but not instantly) if a player is closer to the enemy spawn than the pact forces and that player attack as soon the mobs spawn all the aoes will be casted on that player (20+ aoe = instakill) maybe with a little coordination this can be exploited untill they fix up this event
ok a couple of days ago i managed to succesfully complete the escort event and capture the balthazar temple, as i’ve noticed the only way to do this event other than have a very huge group is to have someone who knows exactly when the aoe spike will arrive to direct some player luring them away from the pact forces to save them (i can confirm that aoes are cast on the closest player who attacks the mobs). Doing this way the morale loss was limited to 50% at the first spike, huge loss anyway, and at the second one we managed to mantain the last 5% morale remained ’till the altar.
