In Diessa Plateau, there is an event called Defeat the giant assaulting the Town of Nageling. It’s an event in which a giant (you may remember it from one of the GW2 trailers) is attacking a town, and killing all the NPCs who live in said town.

I really, really hate this event.

Because:

a) There is a single enemy in the entire event. In other big bosses, we fight the boss and some smaller minions. In this case, there is only the big giant, nothing else. The problem with this is that, if a player dies, he is not going to be able to kill the giant and rally; and there is no other enemy nearby for the player to kill, so he will just go to defeated mode. Someone could ask, “And why doesn’t someone just revive the poor guy?”. Simple:

b) The giant is mostly a one trick pony. Once in a while he throws rocks, but it’s very once in a while so it doesn’t really matter. He can Fear people with a very cool looking attack, but it doesn’t really make much of a difference if he makes people run away from him for 2 seconds. And he was a ground stomp that kills everyone around him in a single strike. His only dangerous attack in this stomp, which is rather relevant since it instantly kill people. Now, this isn’t very interesting – if you know about this attack, it’s very easy to avoid it by staying slightly beyond its range (it’s slightly less than a 900 range) and just attack the giant over and over; all his other attacks are insignificant. In other hand, melee characters who try to get close to the giant will die, and will be defeated – the stomp attack is used so often that it cannot be dodged more than two times in a row, and the interval between stomp attacks is shorter than the time it makes to revive someone. Since there is no other enemy to kill and thus rally, a player who is downed by the stomp attack will pretty much be defeated.

c) The giant has a very, very big health pool. It takes so long to kill him that I often see people asking where is the chest after he has been defeated, thinking he was a world boss like the Shatterer.

The result: fighting this giant is a matter of staying at 900 range spamming attacks over and over. No other strategy required, other than feeling bad for people who get too close to him. And it takes a considerable time for the giant to die, so it’s a lot of attacks to be spammed.

IMO, this is the worst Dynamic Event I have seen in the game. It needs to be more threatening, the giant needs to be less predictable and less of a one-trick pony, there should be more enemies so a downed player can rally, and so on.

What do you people think? Do you like this event?

He and his supremely powerful cousin Kol Skullcrusher over in Harathi Hinterlands could definitely use an HP decrease. It’s understandable that they’d have large HP pools being giants and also champions, but even then it is disgustingly large, especially when all 3 of the fightable dragon champions seems to have a smaller pool. The giant in Nageling is worse in this regards as he is incredibly easy, while on the flipside Kol’s stomp range is so massive you can’t even long bow him from a safe distance and the damage it does it almost certain to OHKO elementalists that don’t stack vitality or have protection. They definitely need some HP decreases and a difficulty up for the giant at Nageling (dodge or die if you fight Kol).

I know Kol Skullcrusher can be dodged with ease. Even as an ele. Roll twice, arcane shield the next stomp. Mist form the next one if you cant roll, rinse repeat. Easiest champion monster ive ever fought.

Ye it isn’t difficult at all for range classes i suppose but everyone that was in melee range was basicly sitting on the ground having a picknick.

He’s extremely easy. You can melee him and not get hit if you can actually dodge his stomps. I just stand there and dodge every stomp/block with Shelter(when no endurance), while other people who are not confident enough to melee attack from range(which is usually everyone, as people trying to melee him ends up dead within 5 seconds LOL!).

My only concern is, he’s a huge waste of time. He has A LOT of hp, yet the reward is barely anything, and there is no big chest.

He is more powerful then the Shatterer, but is in a lower level area. So he definitely needs some tweaks.

I’d agree that the giant just takes too long to die, and the fact he poses zero threat to someone using a ranged weapon doesn’t help. It’s a bit like the boss in Svanir’s Dome, equip a gun start auto attacking and ALT+TAB out and get gold contribution.

For me the worst thing about this event is that having missed the beginning of it four times I have no idea why a giant is attacking. Most events you can turn up late and get a general idea of what is happening and why, but this just seems to be a giant is attacking kill it. I’ve found no real explanation of why the giant attacks the town or where it comes from.

Personally I love the giant bosses. As a Thief I just use Death Blossom or roll and he can’t touch me. I wouldn’t change a thing about the fight mechanics. If you can’t melee him effectively than use range.

I do agree thought that the giant in Diessa Plateau needs a chest or something as it is a lot of effort for 80ish copper.

I personally was a bit dissapointed by his… speed.

I would love some running away from the huge boss, but he moves in slow motion :o

And yes- he has huuuuggggeeeee amount of HP… too huge ^^’

Found out that there is another giant in harathi hinterland(35-45). He seems to have more HP, while hitting for slightly lower(and I base this from % HP lost per stomp). He also seems to spawn quite often..

The stomp only kills glass cannons. I’ve personally survived two stomps back to back with my warrior, with only the healing skill used in between. (Don’t ask how could I miss two dodges in a row for such slowly telegraphed attack)

I was very excited when I first saw this Giant at Nageling, but very disappointed when all he ever did was slowly mope about stomping. Then I was disappointed again when it was obvious the HP were ridiculously high. Then I was yet again disappointed when no loot spawned. I cried out, “/say WHERE IS THE LOOT!??” A reply came, “/say He was ghetto”. That witty comment was a partial saving grace to the event.

Anyone seen the movies, “HULK”? You know, the big green comic-book hero?
Well THAT’S almost as fast and as dynamic as this giant at Nageling should move around. OK, maybe not that fast, but hopefully you get my point.

I agree, the mechanics are pretty easy to figure out and you can melee, but only if you have the right skills before running into the fight, but it takes sooooooooooooooooo long , I was just bored, once the mechanics are figured it goes from hard to incredibly easy.

Please lower his HP just a bit devs.

OR add another move and a chest, maybe a jump so he crashes to melee range quickly to make it interesting and reward to make it worth our time

I find it pretty funny that this giant moves in slow motion, but the Claw of Jormag is lightning fast.

This Boss was my first real large powerfull boss fight and the whole experiance was a blast. It was wild, confusing, people dropping dead all over including me, just a lot of fun. Went back yesterday after lvling to see him again but no spawn.

-If they wanted to make it harder, they should have him reflect projectiles and make you kids learn how to dodge at the right moment.
-They have big health pools so more people can experience them. I’m sure you notice people pour in, and others /map about the giant, allowing for more people to see it. Plus, he’s a giant. Giants have lots of health. I know because my dad is a giant…
-If you’re bored at range, get in melee range and have more fun. I love going into melee range on some fights just to prove to myself I can dodge abilities and such.
-Earlier events are meant to be more cool and less hard. I’m pretty sure, by now, every event has been asked to be made harder or more intricate. Honestly, that’s a bad idea, because then every event would take 30 minutes and wouldn’t allow for easy access.
-If you really want to suggest something, suggest an easier fix. Making the giant drop better loot, or have a chance to drop something cool.

I think the longer events that seem more mundane should have some type of interesting reward besides the norm. Maybe give any giant (because they all take awhile to kill) a chance to drop a Giant minipet or something. Low chance, like .1%.

I’ve found no real explanation of why the giant attacks the town or where it comes from.

I actually got pretty lucky in this regard: my first time doing the event I found the original spawn point of the NPCs that kick off the event. It starts off in a small cave in the hills to the southwest of Nageling if I recall. A small group of separatists begin declaring that they are tired of the constant fighting and wish for peace. They start heading towards Nageling while they keep repeating they only want to talk to the leaders in the town and to let them in to negotiate peace terms. When they arrive, the guards, being suspicious, refuse to let them in, but the separatists give them a peace offering anyway. I’m a little iffy about what happens after that but it’s only a couple seconds later when the giant suddenly appears and starts attacking the town.

Of course, this being my first time, I went “oh cool, there’s a giant to kill!” And promptly died to his stomp =(

Bahaha you think giant takes too long to die? Try doing it with 2 people. That’s right, I was “tanking” by evading all his attacks while a necromancer auto attacked from a safe distance. Before you begin saying, how could I tank all his stomps, let me tell you, I was warrior with signet that increases endurance regeneration and I was using Greatsword which has a evade skill. Took us 40 minutes to kill and I was evading maybe every 5-10 seconds.

I tell you , it’s very satisfying to “tank” this boss. Usually it’s just me meele-ing him while everyone just ranges from a safe distance and always nice to hear people go “pro tank, good job” etc etc at the end.

I also like doing the Kol the Skullsmasher chain in level 35-45 human zone because A) There’s actually a chest at the end By the time it ends you can start the chain again C) It’s a ton of exp/karma, I think maybe 5-6 dynamic events in total and that’s ONLY if you follow the Kol chain. If you follow the other chain that meets up at the end, that’s a LOT more.

the giant frustrates me so much. his attacks are annoying, his sounds are annoying (his roars haunt my dreams), and even if we defeat him, he comes back like every 15 minutes!

I feel really bad for Naegling. they probably want to just give up and move somewhere else by now.

Didn’t know we had melee-only classes?

If you wanna go into close combat, you can, for about 3-4 dodges which you have in total, inlcuding their recharge time.
And it gets better, you won’t take any other damage at all!

It’s a fairly easy task to survive if you don’t try to stay in close combat without your “invulnerability spells” recharged against a Giant who is 5-20 times as tall as you (depending on Asura or Norn Perspective) .
It’s common sense, I think? I mean, there are lots of other people fighting that Giant too, just take turns in “tanking” him, because that’s kind of what it sounds like you are trying to do.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the fight is very enjoyable from the gameplay perspective. Visually its a different story obviously and I like this kind of eye candy in GW2. Like other events.

I don’t think either that there is much to change in the behaviour of this Giant, he’s one after all.
Anet could add other mechanics though, timed or health based. For instance, the last survivors of this village are preparing to throw ropes at him to pull him down for…10 seconds? during that time the melee classes could hit him without worries.
Similar to some dragon lieutenants…

You are right though, there is barely any context to the fight for people who arrive late and this shows in other parts of the game too unfortunately.
