The adds in Orr events are off the charts
On Desolation a bit ago my husband had been working on Lyssa for maybe a half an hour before I called him in for dinner. We then ate, chatted, cleaned up and he still make it back before she died. Yeeeeah, scaling whatnow?
We finished a while ago the Lyssa event in Desolation…It was terrible! The summoned mobs (especially that big purple Gorrila Corrupted Illusion and the Champion Farmer) one hit people for 20k-25k. The fight was live for more than 1 hour I believe. Something went very wrong with the scaling of the event!
Yeah, not to mention that the champ pictured above managed to hit my poor engineer twice in a row for 33k…and while Lyssa was still alive there was at least one other champion around hitting for 24+k.
I know, I know, learn2dodge and all…but you can’t deny that is a bit ridiculous…
Nobody seems to be commenting on the pure insanity that is the Temple of Grenth event chain yet, so here I go.
Sure Lyssa and Balthazar are harder with the new adds, but I’ve seen them unlocked a couple of times. Grenth simply can’t be done. The Gates of Arah event chain sounds like it’s ridiculous now, too.
Has anyone else noticed that Grenth hasn’t been open and uncontested even once since the patch?
I had a massive group attempting it last night and it was still impossible to keep Jonez alive during P2 while he performs his cleansing ritual. I don’t remember it ever being that hard. After about 15 tries, I gave up. Too many hours wasted.
Everyone I’ve met while trying the guesting method on other servers was having the same problems, too. The enemies seem to be OP now. Upon spawn, they all seem to be using the same skill at the same time on Jonez, one-shotting him.
Sometimes it was the Spiders, sometimes the Wraiths.
I haven’t done Grenth yet, but thanks for mentioning it. I will avoid it till its been fixed!

I was, the new spiders destroy Jonez and the players in less than a minute.

Not really a solution
- when there are 4+ veterans/champions attacking you, you can’t dodge them all
- when half of them are invisible because of culling or not loaded fast enough by most people’s PCs
- when they’re expecting you to react in 0.5s when you have 5FPS
I wouldn’t mind the changes with veteran spiders and their hatchlings…if only they included loot.
What happened with this? Is this intentional or not?
It’s ridiculous to have to spend 2 minutes clearing all those veteran spiders yet not even get rewarded with exp or loot

I think anet added an extra digit to the scaling. That’s the only thing to explain such carelessness and lack of testing.
That, or they genuinely enjoy fighting champions who take 10 minutes to kill, with little to no reward.
Since this update has been in the works for awhile, I’m actually willing to believe they DO enjoy fighting champions!

Gets even funnier when the Champion adds are harder than the boss itself.
WTB devs who play their own game.
How hard would it have been on the test server to spawn 50 or so bots to see how much the enemy health scales, and how long it takes to defeat them?
How could they NOT test the new scaling with major world bosses?
Is this REALLY ArenaNet’s standard of “fun”?
Why will it be another month before (possibly) any fix? This seems like a very game-breaking issue…
(edited by Kain Francois.4328)
I’m guessing it’s “working as intended”. It seems to me that a portion of Arenanet have been working very, very hard to turn this mass appeal game with the potential to someday match peak WoW for success, into a niche title that suffers the same languishing fate as pretty much every MMO since WoW.
This game and this developer had something truly special that bucked established MMO paradigms and charted a new direction for MMOs that could scale content for level and numbers that broadened the appeal while not slipping into complete “easy mode”. It seems that since launch the revolutionary forces inside Arenanet have either left or have been stifled and now we are experiencing the resurgence of developers who want to make the game as much like every other failed, old school MMO that has ever been as possible. It actually feels like pre-launch Arenanet was just replaced with the SWTOR developers post launch.
Grenth pre-event was called on map.
I joined the fight at cannon.
We all wiped, like 9 players down.
There was so many AoE on the ground that there was just no chance for anyone.
Nobles can ground AoE but now it seems they added this ability to Vet Wraiths too.
Stacks of ground AoE, that’s what we get in events now.
Chain dodging can’t even protect you from them, all you can do is fleeing.
What players zerg need to do nowadays is running in large circles to avoid the ground AoE pulses.
Benny Hills tactic ftw!
I never go to orr ever. I was respawnt killt by champion wraith that drains all blood…

Until you get hit by the spider’s infamous immobilize/pull into AOE combo.
We’ve done Grenth on my server ( we did them all actually, even Arah). It really wasn’t that bad. There were definitely more downed players than usual though. I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as y’all are saying.
Melandru was just silly though.
Just tried Grenth on Deso. As soon as the mobs appeared on Jonez in the final phase he got destroyed.
Managed Melandru today, literally at the last second. It was a big push for monthly Veteran kills, but not fun at all. I haven’t even tried Grenth since the patch, and i won’t.
I am personally grossed out (read that, ANet: grossed out) at the sight of anyone covered in spider eggs (that hatch more Veterans). I will avoid doing events where Champion Spiders show up from now on. And i do not like to play games that make me feel physically unwell.
You have to remember, Anet has no QA and it shows.
The spider hatchlings spawning as veterans doesn’t even make sense…“I know you were just born, but today, you are a leader.”
Meanwhile, Frozen Maw still goes down way too fast….
Did Grenth really need a boost at all? It was already a pretty good challenge as it was. Some of the temple bosses could’ve used a slight boost (Dwayna) but Grenth and Melandru were fine as they were.

Sometimes it was the Spiders, sometimes the Wraiths.
The spiders just massacre him in seconds, and their hp pools are so large that even with everyone focusing on dpsing them they still overwhelm him. On Yak’s Bend last night I did the Grenth temple run at least 10 times and everytime we would kill the priest and the adds from the champion spider would eventually out number us 3 to 1. What’s worse is that they seem to focus Jonez far more than players. IE: Jonez being all the way across the cave from the grouped adds and no players near him, yet the spiders still go after him.
That being said, Melandru and Dwayna weren’t too bad to unlock.
Good. This is how it should be.
I did Grenth yesterday as an Elementalist and honestly it wasn’t too bad. Jonez part was the easiest imo, the black hard hitters were the phase there were most downed people. After succeeding with the Event, the giant spiders took a good while to down (their HP should be lower since no reward imo).
How to protect Jonez:
- Stay back, stay grouped and most impotantly, in front of Jonez
- I used the Earth AoE knockdown every time when the mobs spawned, then swapping to lightning hammer to apply AoE blind and stun field
For me it seemed that control is the key, not zerker dps.
edit: A funny thought just hit me while I was doing Flame Elem. a few days ago, I said to my friend “It’s kinda sad this is this easy now, I remember during the beta and after launch, having tons of players here wiping while struggling to stay alive, felt like a real achievement to down the guy.”
Fighting Temples in Orr postpatch is actually interesting now, personally I feel the difficulty is spot on.

How dare you tell people to not facerool their keyboards while pressing 112f112f112f on their zerker dps warriors? Everything should be doable with least effort and zero tactics. Ah and the devs should be flamed more. Jesus christ…

I really hope for your sake that you are trolling.
In the possibility you aren’t, make sure to read the actual thread, so as not to give the topic an illusion of conflicting opinion.
This is as matter of fact as it gets, the changes were not tested to any degree, and the last thing we need are the l2p morons coming in here and giving everyone else advice about broken content.
*Edit: the Risen Wraith ability was fixed, nvm (it was previously impossible to kill and instantly downed everyone in the area at 1200 range). However, the event scaling is still messed up for ‘all’ the escort quests, champion chickens hitting me for 20k, etc. It’s all been said before, and the most recent scaling change has just exacerbated the already existing issues.

Grenth temple haven’t been done today on Underworld server because of the increased difficulty. I think it’s silly that the reason we fail to protect keeper Jonez is that he can’t move away from the red circle on the ground that those shades(?) put under him. In my opinion that is extremely cheap way to make that event more difficult. Even with people using heals on him, and trying to take hits instead of letting Jonez take them, we still end up failing at 30sec-1min.
I don’t understand why they even needed to make this event more difficult. I think it was difficult enough, especially if you had some inexperienced players there who stood right on top of Jonez. Really wish they’d sort out champion spiders/shades etc. in Orr.
On borlis pass last night, we had the part 2 of grenth and failed at <30s. I think it’s possible, but the biggest problem is that everyone needs to know what they’re doing and working with each other. And the obvious problem with that is pug doesn’t coordinate. Having a commander lead things in temples help a lot (commander here).
Between shield & dodge, I was on melee range of grenth priest the entire time with exception of dodging aoes — often being alone with grenth. I had mostly zerk armor (chest & legs were knights) during this, so I do find the first part clearly viable as long as you time things well. But there’s no way everyone ran grenth enough to know what to expect when. In most part, I do complete part 1 of grenth more than I fail.
Part 2, the defense, is where it’s really really —-—-. Especially when you have lot of people. The mob will kill jonez in 1~3 hits and it’s lot harder to keep them off of jonez entirely than part 1. If you see a mob near jonez, and you don’t have a CC ready (b/c clearly lot of people carry this in pve…), you lost. Lot of people will also unintentionally pull the mobs to jonez and it’s game over. So a single person messing up will yield a complete loss for the entire group.
TL;DR: Play it like WvW. Carry CC’s and control the mobs’ paths.
My very simple suggestion is this: Make defense targets scale with the mobs. Not just the mobs.

I was going to create a new thread on the ridiculousness of some of the event scaled mobs in Orr, but caught this thread first.
I’ll let these screenshots speak for themselves, but first a bit of intro: Just finished defending Shelter’s Gate as part of the event. Had to deal with Vet Risen spiders that annoyingly spammed pulls and hit for 15k+ damage. Cool, whatever.
Event ends, just as a new Champion Spider wave arrives on the scene, and for whatever reason it does not despawn… For the next five minutes, the random assortment of players at Shelter’s gate fought this monstrosity, and it’s veteran hatchling kin. It took nearly as long to kill this single Champion as it did to finish the event that spawned it.
If that’s not broken, I don’t know what is. This applies to spiders elsewhere as well – Grenth is nearly impossible now as the new AoE spider pull is pretty much a garunteed insta gib on Jonez.
Vet/Champ chicken explosions are crazy now too. During defend Penitent Camp, a dead chicken took out about seven people at ridiculous ranges. I can understand making their death explosions more severe, but why increase the range too?
For the toast!
Congrats anet. Lyssa is now as boring as jormag and grenth undo-able.
Welp the camps certainly get interesting when champion wraiths spawn.. Still the porous bones are worth it.
The mobs in the Orr zones are ridiculous. I use to solo some Champs by kiting and now they 2 shot me. The Grenth Champ is ridiculous. When he steals your health, your health drops very quickly almost to the point you have no time to react. A group about 10-15 of us were working on him and we got him down about 10% then he healed himself back up. This happened a couple times then we gave up.
I use to solo all Vets and now they 2 shot me. I worked on the Vet Chickens. In the past, I had no trouble with them infact I use to take on 3. Now, when they explode 3/4 of my health drops and I continue to take damage then I’m dead.
I use to take on 6 regular mobs but now it’s a challenge to stay alive fighting 1-2. I appreciate a challenge that’s why my favorite past time is searching out Champs and Vets then soloing then. Now it is out of control. Once the fight is engaged I may stay alive for 10 seconds. I’m a ranger with a focus on toughness and healing. I can take on a large amount of damage, well use too in the Orr zones but not any more. I’m planning on avoiding the Orr zones until a good change is made.

The best update ever. Finally some challenge rather than spamming 1111111 (oh wait, you don’t even have to spam, you have autoattack).
Great job devs, I hope you won’t revert this back to it was.
Now it’s time to increase the reward for completing these events.

Because smacking champions with ridiculously large health pools that constantly spawn vets for ten minutes is fun.
And then the instadeath Well of Darkness pools… Bet many necros are jelly of the fact that they even do damage.
For the toast!

Not sure if serious….
Challenge would be layering in complexity and driving more group synergy work.
Challenge is not “hurr let’s just thow in more veterans and champs and have (often) unavoidable AoE instagibs”.
You did get the latter part right, because the rewards and loot are just way out of line with both the current mob damage in the events and what you can return by running “lf1m zerker” CoF1 runs.
Soo, just got instagibbed on may 2700 armor necro for 40k by a Plague Carrier invisible because of culling. Really?
…40k by a Plague Carrier invisible because of culling. Really?
I can explain that — get ready for the horror:
It was done by a Veteran Risen Plague Carrier.
…instadeath Well of Darkness pools…
Pretty horrific, and there’s no documentation of the new Veteran/Champion Risen Wraith since the update.
Nothing on Google Search about them… until now.
Orr events are unplayable now. I sincerely hope this is a bug, because these changes are literally to stupid to be believed.
I don’t know about unplayable…but if they are going to be WAY harder to do then CoF p1…we should get a chest at the end of each and be rewarded the same about of silver for completing each one.
I don’t get Anets logic on the HUGE buff to the mobs. If mobs are going to hit you for more HP then you could ever possibly have…they need to get rid of culling and there needs to be a CLEAR induction to the move.
Can we get a Anet response to these changes?
When a champion chicken can launch a 30k egg at you with no warning hidden in spell flashes.

Being killed by enemies you can’t see is not a “challenge” by any means.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
Did something change with the mobs in Orr? I’m always grinding there without too much of a problem. I can go down every once in a while, but I don’t recall those chickens hitting you so ridiculously hard… Did something change with the patch?

The update was a good shocker for me seeing how I did not read what this patch was. So when I jumped into the event at penitent camp and got a one shot and downed and death on the very next second. I thought wow I must have charged right into the champions nuke. After being healed and killed instantly again with out being able to roll out of it the event ended and I had 5 damaged armor pieces, no reward for the event because I never got a shot off. At first I thought it was me because I play an ele with a high crit build but when I so Warriors and Guardians dropping like flies as well then I knew something was up.
Needless to say the next event went about the same it gave me a good laugh at how overpowered then veterans are and the number of them (Spiders). I think I will move to staff and attack from afar and run if anything even looks at me while playing in Orr.

Just did Shelt and there was a sea of vet spider hatchlings. Players down everywhere. I don’t know if this is a bug or bad design but it’s pretty silly for a DE anywhere. I’d love to have some kind of response on this. Is it buggy code, a joke, or not working as intended?
I’ve been noticing this on Jade Quarry a lot lately, most often at Shelter’s gate right after the event. Champion Spiders with Veteran hatchling minions spawn along with a horrific champion wraith and pretty much wipe everyone there.
What leads me to believe this is a bug and not a feature, is that they’re neutral when they spawn (but someone always attacks them anyway) and when you do manage to kill them, they give no xp and no loot. You can’t convince me that’s working as intended.

Not convinced, it would make sense if the issue was just post event mobs, but it isn’t. Damage from mobs mid event when upscaled is through the roof and when you combine that with the fact it is often coming via an AoE or unseen form (thanks culling). Then it seems a bit more than a basic bug.
Champion Risen Wraiths wiping entire events of people – not dropping loot.
Being one shot by a VETERAN Chicken, at range, ‘shoot egg’, while on a warrior using Knight’s gear.
So my guess is they gave some of the lvl 80 mobs new skills to make them less one dimensional, without actually considering how the new skills scaled in events. AT ALL.
At one point before it was fixed, the Champion Risen Wraith was literally invincible, only Longbow Rangers could hit it without dieing instantly and healing it (1200 range Life Transfer ticking for 5k 2x~ a second).
Could a dev please respond to this, it really, REALLY needs to be fixed in order for people to continue dynamic events in the area.
This is NOT a discouragement to Cursed Shore farming, it’s a completely broken scaling issue. If the aim is to lessen the profit you can get from CS farm, then fix where the T6 mats drop so that the only viable way to get them isn’t from Heavy Moldy Bags.
