I am very new to this game, having only played a few weeks. My highest character just got level 23. Early on I kept hearing something about a train in Queensdale. I had no idea what people were talking about. I actually thought there might be a train somewhere. Turns out they should have called it a zerg or something else. Then I saw them, and they were in the same area as me. So I followed along. Next thing I know I’m helping kill this champion mob. Then they put some waypoints in chat and I followed along and saw what it was all about. I thought it was pretty cool. Then I realized that’s all these people do, and that they don’t actually have to “play the game” or experience anything else. They can level all the way up by doing that, and apparently get some decent gear. At level 19 I got a level 80 exotic greatsword. At level 19! That is absurd. To me the train is counter productive to what a game should be. It should be about getting out and seeing all of the game. You don’t have to if you want to just run the champ train in Queensdale. Don’t take the champs away. Don’t stop the level 80’s from coming to play if they want to farm them. But change some timing with spawns. Make them a lot less frequent. To me the champ train is just shy of an exploit with how easy it makes it to level and get loot.

Going around the world doing heart quest is a faster way to level then the champ train, people sometimes use the champ train to level because they do not enjoy leveling through heart quest.

As far as the level 80 exotic Greatsword, grats, it does not happen often. (You can still get champion weapons from white-yellow bags)

It is easier to level doing something else. If you don’t enjoy this play style, don’t engage in it. Players are engaging in this style either because they enjoy it or because the rewards provided by engaging in other aspects of the game are significantly below their expectations.

I understand your complaint, but “fixing” this in the manner you’ve suggested would help to perpetuate the perception that the developer nerfs every farm opportunity in the game, making farming nonviable. Like every other MMO out there, endgame consists of repeating content to get “stuff” you want, whether that be titles, weapon and armor skins, or BiS gear. In GW2, many of those goals involve farming gold, a lot of gold.

I strongly suggest that you find things about the game that you enjoy and want to pursue, and leave off worrying about what others are doing. Whether you sell that exotic or keep it to use yourself, count your blessings. They don’t drop that often.

Also, don’t get put down by the fact that some people flame you for “not waiting for the train”. If you see an event and think you can do it alone or with a few friends, go for it and don’t mind the chat.

1: My personal opinion is that on your first character you should not join the train. You simply miss too much.
2: That doesnt mean the train itself is a bad thing. Before that nobody cared bout killing champions. Many end game things cost a lot of money. too many farms have been nerfed. This was a stimulant to kill champions more often.
3: the flame bout the train should stop. If people are flaming right click their names and report.(there is a different between ‘Please don’t kill the spider yet’ and ‘OMG you idiot, you killed the spider are your kittened’). The flame should stop and Anet is working actively bout that.

Just because there is a train going all the time doesn’t mean it’s the same people all the time. People join up, do it for a while, drop out and someone else starts. I do it occasionally when I want events or champions or group events for the daily and I want to do get it done fast, and then stop when I get them. The rewards aren’t that great.

Most of the people that are doing it have seen and done just about everything already. If you’re new to the game you really are better off completely ignoring it or just getting in on the champ kills here and there.

Yeah, great.
Let me disagree. I have 9 lvl 80 characters, all of them full exotics, most of them with ascended crap, legendary…. etc.
And Queensdale train is a nice distraction. Fulfilling empty spaces of my time. If Anet nerfs it, it will become irrelevant and well… dead.
Why do You want to lvl up you toon on train? Do it on hearts, on personal story – it’s much faster, more rewarding. But believe me. After 5th character it will be sooooo boring, that running train with people, cracking jokes and simply farming, looks really tempting.
No matter – I rarely see same people for more than 2-3 rounds of choo-choo. I usually join train for 2-4 rounds myself… always when I wait for my guildies to gather. You know – I can sit for almost hour in LA waiting for them to decide what to do, I can plunge myself in PvP (but the stench is hard to wash) or run with the train. Oh yeah, there is always WvW, but I prefer to run there with my own squad, than with anonymous zerg. But that’s just me.

“To me the champ train is just shy of an exploit with how easy it makes it to level and get loot.”

The phrase you are looking for is probably ‘raids tackling group content’. So yes that makes it easy, safe, fast, rewarding. I’m sure it isn’t an intentional part of the game design and the champ trains didn’t exist until extra loot was put onto champions a few months ago.

Oddly enough, there were people running Queensdale champion trains on FC before the champion loot bags were introduced. Maybe they were alt leveling, maybe there were fewer of them, but they were there.

I have 10 lvl 80’s(too many I’m sure) and say don’t nerf the train. I know Anet is well aware of the champ trains and its an easy distraction while leveling an alt. I have map completion on 2 characters already and I don’t feel the need to have it on any others right now. And at the moment its the only way to get a decent amount of karma since the nerf a few patches ago. It would only be an exploit if people were messing with mechanics of the fight and such, which they don’t.

Lots of toons and so little time :D

^ This, the queens champ train was present some what before champ bags were added, though, people didn’t worry about coordination as much since the goal was mainly just exp/karma , and the champ monthly.

just came back to try the game again, and I was appalled to find what had happened to this game.
We’ve gone from a promise of a dynamic world to mobs spawning with such regularity that you can make trains like this, and you almost have to because of the daily and monthlies…..its managed to turn a game with a real potential for dynamic living world into a parody of itself.

I’m fairly new to the game, and I have no issue with the train. If that’s how they like to play, why should it be changed because you don’t like it? They obviously do.

I jump on the champ train for a few rounds, generally until it gets derailed by non-train champ slaying, and then I go explore, do heartquests, try and find some dynamics, ect. I enjoy the train because it’s something cooperative and has given me decent loot to actually be able to get better equips for myself. It’s an almost guaranteed event, whereas I might miss the other map events for exp and karma, I know generally I can find the train and get a good amount of both.

While you are in this world, you are the light of the world.

It’s kinda fun to have a non-group group event. I’ve run with the zerg to get a daily requirement out of the way, and just to run around killing champs.

You aren’t forced to do the train, in fact.. it’s very tedious.
As for the exotic.. it took me roughly 866 champion bags before I got my first exotic. And no, that isn’t an exaggeration. I got my first Exo from a bag during WvW.

Am I the only one who thinks Anet are missing a trick with this train running thing?

They’re supposed to have a ‘Living World’ that differentiates the game from other MMOs but most players play it just like any other MMO… farming identical encounters over and over.

I mean… wouldn’t the bandits have realised they were a bit screwed after thousands of times of dozens of players zerging through them and killing their boss? Wouldn’t it be fun if the train got wrecked by a surprise counter? Traps? Boars perhaps developing rudimentary intelligence and ganging up on their vicious predators?

I got an exotic in my first week of playing, from the train. Monsoon. Totally worthless to a Thief. Wasn’t going to roll a new character just because I got a drop. Sold it. Exotics have to drop somewhere… but a tiny random chance isn’t really enough to justify handing new players the most powerful items in the game.

Eh, I’ve not seen the train in queens dale, but then I don’t really care much for repeating content at that level. Sure, its good for the occasional look, but I prefer to look at the world meta-events. The temples too : I may finish 6 events for Lyssa and the one priestess, but its designed that way and has an intrinsic hours long cooldown. Balthazar, I actually omit over half the content, and still I may complete 20 events (many back to back, nonstop action) to get it open, and acts of random in opening Balth give it variety, which keeps me interested. I’m not there for the drops, but I expect they are superior to any you get in Queensdale, including stacks of heavy and large loot bags which let me make my own exotics – ones that I want, not simply what the RNG has deemed that I should have.

People are at queens dale because its early, simple, and easy. There is other content that is not early, not simple, not easy, but as or more rewarding.
