event difficulties
Great postings I seen a few postings on champs not solo able a few minor ones are but it is hit and run . Kinda bad that they are holding good drops and no one can get to them. Iron marches is my hour of game time today.. Hope fully we will get a answer on some of this but I do not expect one till after the holidays..
Can you provide specific examples of non-soloable events? At scale 1, they’re all soloable, or should be. Are other players in the area scaling up the event without helping?
What scale are the dragons supposed to be? Because I can solo Tequatl the Sunless, but none of the other two. Sure it takes a lot of time to get him down, but I have done it.
The Shatterer used to be soloable just by mortar spamming him alone, but they changed him and that doesn’t work anymore.
Anyone with a bow can solo the Claw of Jormag. It will take forever and a day but you can do it.

The tricky part to solo-ing Claw of Jormag is sneaking him past the 50-100 people that always show up for the event

responding to the OP and original direction of the post
It seems to me what is happening is that events are flipping over to their end stage event too quickly, too easily and too often. I rarely enter a post 25 area anymore with out finding my self dodging multiple horned icons on the map [often 3 or 4 in an area small enough for them to all appear on the map simultaneously] It may be that a person or two is able to get the events to that point and then of course not able to handle the boss but I come across them in full swing and more often than not unchallenged and in zones with very few players.
What happened to the responsiveness of the zone that used to react to local player population I saw in prepurchase beta? It seems to me that more people are tripping into things and starting events they can not handle, though in recent month or so I have seen back to back events with bosses sometimes overlapping each others roaming area and sometimes up for days as if the timers of the events were just unplugged.
At any rate I really loved this game but pretty as it is my eye is already roaming and only because the PVE is currently a freaky mess IMO. Ive been taking some map screen shots. Maybe a montage of horned icons devouring the map, wait are we playing pac man?

I encountered 2 non-solo-able events in Kessex Hills today while leveling an alt. Both should be solo-able by a level 80 character, but are certainly not solo-able by an appropriately leveled character.
The first was a pack bull escort event from Delanian Waypoint/Black Haven to Kessex Haven Waypoint. Just across the first bridge near the start point, 2 groups of bandits with 3 enemies each, attacks the pack bull from opposite sides. You can aggro one group and kill them, but the other 3 will kill the bull and fail the event before you are done with them. It’s possible that a necro or ele could use a combination of AoE damage and CC (particulary blinding), but it’s still race against the clock to kill 6 enemies focused on a single NPC.
The other event in Kessex is at the quaggan village Moogooloo in Viathan Lake to clear the area of krait slavers. The problem with the event is the respawn rate of the krait. I found the event with 7 krait “remaining”, and seconds after killing a single krait the number would rise back to 7. I started fighting them 2 at a time, and after getting the number to 5 and starting to work 2 more, it would rise back to 7. This trend continued after another player arrived to help. We had slightly better results, getting the “remaining krait” down to 2 a few times before respawns drove it back up to 5-7. It eventually took a total of 4 players to complete this event, and this was only after the 4 of us killed 20-30 krait to drop the number from 7 to 0. We had to split off into 2 groups and aggro 2-3 at a time in order to prevent respawns from happening before we could kill all 7 krait.
There are plenty of other events similar to the krait one with similar respawn issues. You simply cannot solo the events unless you aggro and kill every required enemy at the same time. This is an easy task for level 80 characters in low-level areas because you kill mobs in 2-3 hits, but characters at the intended level for the area/event are usually not able to do this.
Seer Of The Divine | Sarina Starlight | Tireasa | Caedyra
Also there is nothing you can do when a champion mob is occupying a village. It blocks your waypoint and you need to find other vendor to sell trash.
I find it funny to read through all the events that everyone claims cannot be done solo and count how many I have done solo, even some of the group events like branded army and Ash Horizon. The only problems I’ve ever run into with non group events being difficult to solo are escort events that fail on escortee death, the escortees tend to die far too easily and mobs aren’t nice enough to all come single file from one direction.
In Fireheart Rise, there is an event in a very fiery area in the SW with a champ and some kind of turrets firing at you, and those flame birds everywhere respawning. Without the champion, it is possibly soloable, but the champ is the event. I don’t think I got to finish it as I died when I tried with a partner and no more came.
Just did an event in Fields of ruin, escorting someone. The event leads right into the freakin dual wasp champion group event and was swiftly wiped as it happened.
There are no strategies to use when a champ can down you in 1-2 hits. You could throw up invulnerability, use your dodges, and do 5% damage in that time. Once your tricks are done, you are dead.
But considering the promise about champions dropping loot was broken, it’s not worth it to even try these events. It’s a shame they put time and money into making so many events, caves and areas that players have to skip past now.
The dual wasp champ event is another I’ve done solo, or at least used a strat that would allow me to fight indefinitely as other people turned up eventually. Their attacks are pure melee so it’s quite easy to beat them with ranged attacks or by simply circle-strafing while using your own melee. The only time you have to dodge is when they fly up in a loop and begin jabbing multiple times with their stinger.
There are tricks to almost every champion you see in the world. Most of the time it’s the pretty boring ‘just use range’ but others alternate between attacks that are easily withstood or avoided without using a dodge and attacks that are devastating but telegraphed. The trial and error of some of them can be frustrating because some attacks are near instant kills but you should really only ever die to them once.
I wasn’t trying to do the wasp event, I was ambushed with them + separatists doing the escort event. Also, I was using a level-appropriate melee character. When saying every event should be soloable, did they mean “by at least 1 build of one class in the game”?
As I’m sure it has been stated numerous times throughout these postings I would say the biggest hurdle for soloers (most of the people who start a new character these days) is champion mobs simply being too difficult and not worth the time. Now obviously champions are supposed to be difficult and require groups but its especially disappointing to start an event chain and have it lead into a champion level event, which you can then not finish.
Pretty much any event that requires npc escorts or travelling with a group of npcs are difficult as well, a prime example is the balthazar event, though this event can be organised by guilds and in lions arch if anyone is patient enough but similar problems occur in lower level areas as well.
Either ANet have some exceptional action gamers in their testing staff, or nobody bothered to test events beyond the warrior.
The one that drives me nuts every time is the respawning. There’s really no excuse to have enemies you’ve killed respawn within a single iteration of an event. If the event is left half-done and someone comes along later and finishes it off, so what?
When you’re carefully working through a “X remaining whatevers” event, and the number actually begins to increase when you thought you were almost done, it’s really quite pathetic. And before some “pro” comes along with the inevitable “Duh, more DPS” argument, there are better ways to require DPS. Respawning enemies is a cheap and lazy alternative to more sophisticated AI and encounter dynamics which people have been crying out for for months.
The dual wasp champ event is another I’ve done solo, or at least used a strat that would allow me to fight indefinitely as other people turned up eventually.
Then you didn’t do it solo, did you?

Have not been to Jormag in a few weeks but last time I was there on SBI there were about that many people there. All the dragons on that server have pretty good crowds.
Just got killed twice ridiculously fast around the lv 6 heart area in Plains of Ashford. In the ruins of Barradin’s estate there’s a champion boss + about 5 adds. They all aggro at once, even though they’re nowhere near each other. But that doesn’t matter as the boss takes 50% health each hit (which somehow fires through walls). Just died twice with my lv 29 guardian. Did I mention these are lv 8 mobs?
The only other player who I saw bother exploring here ran past me for the waypoint, dragging aggro onto me.
Were you aboveground or in the tomb? There always seem to be unlabeled champion ghosts with names down in the tomb (there’s usually 3 of them, and the one time I went down there and they were absent, there was a 4th at the end). I have no idea who thought those enemies were a good idea that close to the beginning of a starter area, or at all.
Is it just me, or do I see a lot of problems here? Now I’ve been playing for only a couple of days, but I must say that I’m extremely disappointed. I won’t go into all the details, because this is not the place. I bought this game because of all the reviews and discussions I’ve read stating how easy it is to solo in this game. And that to me is a major selling point. Now I’ve tried out all of the classes, and I was hoping that all of them could solo in their own way, which I have not seen. It seems that the content is only solo-able with a higher level. I have had several incidents already that have been needlessly frustrating. I’ve also been playing MMOs now for over ten years, and I’ve played all kinds of classes and games, so I’m not new at this. It just seems that this game still has major balancing issues that need to be resolved.

Same I am actively playing 4 MMO type games and there are issues within this one. Last night I was in Iron marches and Patrol the wall with Rexavian Redfoot and the “Garbage Legion” was stuck on sillyness. The event that followed that one was stuck and I had several deaths . Went back there this morning and soloed it with no problem. Did I change anything on my charcter? answer is no… It shows me there are issues within the game and it is a platform under constant upgrade as we all know.
I really would like to see a answer by the mod asking for examples. Thanks to many of the posters on this topic there are several examples. Back to Happy gaming time
Thirteen days and still no response from the mod that asked for examples. I will check into this again in two weeks.
15 days no response figure I would check the forums since black lion trader is down again . Second time in two days glad I used that express product and it failed.. Since Group events seem to be a selling point in this game and there is hardly no groups doing them well at 8 am my time. Still wondering when or what is going to change about this or will there be no answer.. Heading over to GW1 finish that last story line there.. Happy gaming GW2 players ..

Ural’s Delve at the skill point, a Veteran Spider appeared as a Dynamic Event. After about 4 minutes, with all my turrets active, I’d done maybe 5% of its health in damage at best. It destroyed my turrets in 2 or 3 attacks (even the thumper!).
There were no other players anywhere near when the event started, but the spider was still impossibly tough. Also, it’s location icon on the map appeared twice.
Note that I first defeated a regular veteran spider before the event started, out of nowhere. It wasn’t a very nice surprise, especially since I’d just blown up my turrets for the final blow on the normal veteran spider.

Thats A group event , with a champion ghost you will not solo it @ 29 lol , im thinking you mean HORACE ? he is brutal seen many low groups down there never to be seen again hehe :P

Yup. It’s only been out for a few months, and the devs are still working on balance.
Also, I think part of the problem may be that they’re balancing for downscaled lvl 80s? I leveled in basically 3 areas, and only started exploring after turning 80. I noticed that a few things I’d tried to do before that were very hard / so difficult they got boring were much easier and more fun when I was 80. Since the whole game is supposed to be endgame, I wonder if balancing for 80s may play a part in the current wacky game balance.
I’d say the Temple of Balthazar quest chain is way too difficult now given the complete lack of players in the area. It should of course not be soloable but even when a group of 10 or so does it the morale seems to drop so fast that it just isn’t feasible to do it. Much of this seems to be due to bad NPC AI since they tend to run off and attack some insignificant enemy out of the path, thus prolonging the pain quest.
The fact that there is a 13 page long thread on this forum just for on what servers, if any, it is uncontested as well as a multitude of shorter topics on the same subject just screams ‘bad design’ to me.

Yes, this happened to me yesterday and I wanted to report it here. I thought the first Vet was the skill challenge, and then the second comes out with 2 adds, and it’s a CHAMPION despite being called a Vet. There was no way I could have done this solo. I was kitten lucky another player joined in after I waited a while.
A skill point deep in a cave that requires more than 1 person. Bad design. The fight took us about 15 mins, with 4 downs.
Also that grawl cave has a vet for every 2nd enemy. I tried fighting through them all 1-by-1 but the vets would respawn faster than I could kill the last one.
I’ve had several examples of stupid instant respawns and reported about half of them in-game.
Can you make it so respawns don’t attack the person who killed them?
Can you provide specific examples of non-soloable events? At scale 1, they’re all soloable, or should be. Are other players in the area scaling up the event without helping?
I am not sure I agree that difficultly is really the problem. Making the content easier may be the simplest solution, but I don’t think it is necessarily the best.
Maybe it would be better if efforts were made to encourage more max level players to participate in lower zones. Right now rewards/incentives are stacked in favor of repeatedly running certain dungeons and certain high level DEs.

The PVE “balancing” is in essence weird. 1 level below and you can be steamrolled by anything short of a single trash mob. 1 above and suddenly even veterans are more an annoyance than a threat, simply because their extra health makes them take so long to die. Champions however are all over the map, independent of your level.
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a non Group-Labelled event that I haven’t been able to complete solo, although the vista in Echoslab Arches in Iron Marches is rough and the Skillpoint in Meremoot Hill in Kessex tends to have the centaurs respawn too quickly.
Having said that, I think group quests are still okay things, especially for the major zone events like the fire elemental and the shadow behemoth and the shaman in Wayfarer.
But major events aside, I think it’s at the point where either some events should be demoted from group status, including some of them at the ends of DE chains – not all those chains need to end with a champion, do they – OR more needs to be seriously looked at and done to get more people out into the world.
Ummei – Asura Ele
Ash Horizon is doable solo, I can cheese it easy with my engineer as long as there’s 5ish minutes left in the quest when I get there.
I probably shouldn’t be able to do that though, honestly.
What about the Champion Cave Troll in Queensdale?
Can you provide specific examples of non-soloable events? At scale 1, they’re all soloable, or should be. Are other players in the area scaling up the event without helping?
I could not kill a lvl 5 boss with my lvl 25 Ele in asura starting area there is no way to finish it with 1 person (plz don’t tell me to dodge or l2p).
Pay attention to the [Group Event] tag. It means the event is made specifically for groups. Many still can be done solo, but they aren’t made for it.
Defend the Advanced Arcanomics Lab in Mount Maelstrom.
The Veteran Destroyer Harpy (lv 65) vs my lv 66 guardian who never dies. I was nearly full health and somehow got downed in one swooping attack. There was absolutely no chance, and this stuff is normally very easy on my guardian.
Not a Group Event.
Even had food & potion of destroyer slaying.
Waiting around for help has been fruitless of course. Pls fix.
Fought them again after finding someone else who would help. We both nearly died. 1 hit brought my health down 50% (twice), and in my combat logs there was no hits larger than 1,500. I have 10,138 health. Something is fishy.

Sure, most events should be soloable, but asking for events like those with dragons and such should be soloable as well!?
I’m far away of being a hardcore player, far away, but I think the open PvE world is way too easy overall. To less times wrong placed dodges/skills really hurt me as a player… Using them right can shorten the time a(n) fight/event takes, but in general no matter how hard I try, failing is in 90 percent of the time not really an option.
Not even talking about how a down-scaled 80 is destroying mobs, not with 1 shots, but not that much more most of the time…
I wish the open world would provide more challenges overall, also for 80s in lower areas.
I’m afraid with the februar/march updates coming, they gonna improve rewards and implement new or alter existing events, but are these gonna be more challenging/interesting as well?
I really hope, but I’m afraid they won’t… I’m still crossing my fingers!
Events can fail and end in a different direction, but to less times this takes place… Just, if no player is there at all! You can fail, still get a reward and if you succeed next time, you have a even better feeling, because you improved your skills most likely. But if you succeed most events anyway without really pushing your skills, it can get kind of boring quite fast in my opinion…
Nah. I love low-level events where I’m the only one there. Gives me a chance to practice with a new weapon combo I’ve been wanting to try out, or just enjoy the already-fantastic combat in general. Plus, events with single veteran mobs or something can be extremely rewarding, personally, because not only are they challenging, but ANet gives us the tools to take stuff down at a higher level or power than our character.
There are events with Champion mobs, like the Maw, but those shouldn’t be touched. You’re not supposed to solo everything the game has to offer, otherwise this would be a single player game with some multiplayer elements. :V
I try to solo [Group Event]s frequently and usually fail. However, those are clearly labeled for groups. I usually check if it is a group or solo event. The clearing Quandry Scratch of Nightmare Court event in Mount Maelstrom doesn’t look solo-able, at least on any of my level 80 characters. I don’t recall it being labeled [Group Event].
That said, I feel many events are not worth the time you spend to solo them. Sinking the Ash Horizon was done eventually, but it was rough and long.
Early in the game, during my early learning curve, I was not able to solo most Dynamic Events, but have soloed several of those on newer characters after learning more about playing (e.g., the Flame Legion Shaman in Plains of Ashford).
2 more events that aren’t scaled well are:
Caledon Forest, around the crafting tables. This event is ALWAYS active, and it blocks the use of the crafting tables/bank. So annoying. More annoying because you have to run back and forth retrieving ooze to complete it, and each ooze increases the bar by a sliver. People start the event by talking to the NPC with the symbol above their heads, and they have no idea what they are about to inflict on the area. So it just sits there being undone. It’s not worthwhile. Also, it probably includes people crafting in its scaling instead of just those who are doing the event. And the repetitive audio jokes the robot makes make me want to take up cutting.
The other is the underwater quaggan event in Sparkfly (I think it was sparkfly if not Bloodtide. There’s a huge event with undead krait constantly invading this underwater village. There are a number of guards you have to keep alive. The event is soloable but takes about an hour to do. Really not worthwhile, and considering it’s underwater, won’t get done.
Sort of like the Frostgorge underwater event to rez and escort kodan. Survivors are adrift in the water!! Way too much boring work for 1 person to have fun doing. The icebrood can bunch up in their looped pathway and if their zerg approaches you, you’re probably going to die.
Ugh another one.
The Coil events in Mount Maelstrom.
Too many enemies, in small quarters, all getting aggroed together.
The one in the NorthWest (it’s a circle on the minimap) has a champion, 4 turrets, a group of inquest that you have to kill first, and while fighting the champ they respawn.
2 players couldn’t do this. It wasn’t marked as an event or group event, just an insane area that is totally not worth exploring.

Also the volcano event. I’d like to do it and I bet it’s cool, but that whole area inside it is a giant pain in general.

The Straits of Devastation event chains all claim to be soloable, but in practice, none of the are.
I think a lot of people in this thread are missing the point. A number of you are referring to [Group Events] being too hard to solo. They aren’t supposed to be done alone, that’s why they are called [Group Events].
The point is the events that are not labeled as a [Group Event] being nigh impossible to solo. Those are the ones that Jeffrey Vaughn is referring to.
I think it’s still worth discussing group events, since they never get done anymore. It’s a waste of content for them to be in the game yet never completed. I’m on the most populated server there is, and I know of Champion mobs that have been up and undefeated for upwards of a month.
Anet should turn these group events into regular events. If a writhing mob of ten players should ever turn up to one of these events, turn the difficulty back up. As they stand now, no one does them because the rewards aren’t any good and people can get their exp/karma much more efficiently by ignoring them in favor of regular events and hearts.
I’ve been finding that quite a few events in the 70-75 zone are difficult to solo which leaves a lot of way points constantly contested.
A lot of the contested waypoints in Orr don’t even seem to have associated events, for that matter, they’re just contested for no apparent reason.
Can you provide specific examples of non-soloable events? At scale 1, they’re all soloable, or should be. Are other players in the area scaling up the event without helping?
South of the Cereboth Canyon Waypoint is the “Help Kari” event that can’t be soloed because the Destroyers respawn too fast. Kari refuses to follow you if enemies are in the way.
Even a natural 20-25 can kill the mobs in the help Kari event in 5 seconds.
I rarely do Orr events because map completion gives orders of magnitude more rewards for less effort but I have yet to attempt a non group event solo and fail it, and I have completed several group events solo as well.
The event “Protect Scoloar Dane while she closes the portal”, in Dredgehaut Cliffs in the cave Kolkorensburg. This is suppose to be solo-able. Scholor Dane needs to work on a portal and imps appear. Protect the Scholar Dane while fighting the imps. The problem is the imps shoot a poison that does too much damage. I used 2 condition removal spells in addition to my heal spell, I could not solo this. The poison damage is too much. Also, I would attempt to rez the Scholar Dane since the imps killed her so fast, while I was rezing her the imps began attacking me, again shooting the poison and now my health has dropped 80%. I cannot even rez her without getting attacked. One point, I was able to kill all 3-4 imps to rez her but the imps respawned after 3 seconds and then attacked me resulting in the girl dead then me shortly after. I’m a warrior. I tried melee(preferred) – unsuccessful then I tried range, still unsuccessful. The imps continue to shoot that poison and the damage is too great.
One other event,“Kill the imp lord to stop him from summong more imps” which is located in the same zone in the Destoev Sky Peak cave. He summons adds too fast. Initially there are 6-7 adds to kill then him. Well after I finish killig the adds more appear and more and more. The adds spawn too fast. I can’t kill the Veteran Imp and 6 -7 adds at once. I can solo Veterans but not when there are 7 adds and the Veteran.

Many of the non-[Group] events I see listed here I have successfully soloed. I have not been successful 100% of the time and often it takes so long that it is not really worth it*, but they can be soloed.
*E.g., most clearing camps in Malchor’s Leap fall under this category.
Difficult to compete them when so many are broken.
Well I still have not seen a reply from the mod that asked for examples so many have been listed. This will be the first day in 19 days I will log in to see what has changed… Still waiting for that answer 19 days plus 15 days from my last posting and there was many days before that. I will check back again soon..
