Try finding people in 1-15 zones, unless its for Shadow Behemoth or Jungle Wurm?
Been in there 3 hours, saw one other player.
It’s not a group event so yes it is meant to be done solo. Good luck doing that on a same level toon though.

Really?
I see people in the Flame and Frost zones more or less constantly even without those events.

Could be because I am in the UK on a US server, but it is dead as the Dodo.
See part of me thinks, what if I was a new player, got the game for my birthday or something… then faced something like that.
Those scopes have what, 1500 range? I know it is further than my Ranger can fire. But the scope isn’t the problem on its own. I dont want to roll over everything. It is the mechanic that you need to be close to fight the MA, but you cannot be close because of the scope.

Stand behind an environment object (tree, rock, hill) and wait until the scope fires. Then quickly shoot it 2 times, and move back behind the cover. After a few hits the scope will point upwards for a while, thats when you can finish it off with melee.
Level 16 molten Veterans spawning in the area that adjusts you to level 8.
These are noob zones. These overblown events and super-ranged periscopes spawn in places they should never have been placed in.
Scope blasts ignore cover. I tried that already.
I could bring in an lvl 80 Ranger or Warrior and stomp them, but thats not the point.

Unless the event is marked [Group] or has a dungeon entrance (notice the confusion about SAB having a group size recommendation), people conclude that it should be possible to completed solo.

Like all events in Orr?
Most events there are not labeled Group but are still more or less impossible to do solo.
No matter, I should have been clearer: “What makes you think you should be able to solo it without effort”?

Some of these mobs are definately in the wrong places. My lvl 80 guardian was levelled down to 8 and got one-shotted by a molten veteran. I took a closer look at it and found it was lvl 16. There should NOT be lvl 16 mobs in an area where the players get downlevelled to 8.

Those are probably bugged instances of enemies spawning at a higher level than they’re supposed to. Report those if you find it.
The Veteran Molten Bruisers are surprisingly tough for Veterans, however. They’re probably easily handled by a level 80 in Exotic gear, even downscaled, but they’re extremely dangerous to take on solo if you’re not one of those. I managed to kill one and his adds on my level 80 Warrior (with very sub-par gear), but I got downed once and had to use Vengeance to get myself up. (Luckily, there was another mob near death and I had the Sweet Revenge trait.)
Veteran Molten Bruisers are extremely powerful (and the protectors are annoying) but i believe OP is exaggerating. (Also exaggerating about there being no other players around because everyone is doing it (and jumping puzzles) for their monthly) Yeah, my lvl 80 engi has no trouble with them alone.
For my lvl 40, i just hit and run the weaker units until their “morale” runs out. Try employing a little strategy instead of expecting to overpower everything by your self.
The Molten forces and the Periscopes are beyond ridiculous. I’m a relatively new player and getting hammered in the noob areas is a major hassle. I looked into the living story and apparently I need to be level 80 to participate. Not gonna happen anytime soon. So why do I have to put up with these traps at all? Especially when they’re posted along roads and in the middle of event areas? I can’t complete the Black Citadel map at the moment (a story option will allow it, but I’m not using that storyline) and I can’t complete the wayfarer foothills. This Living Story thing should really be run more like the PvP/WvW; with a separation from the regular world so the rest of us don’t get bogged down by the “Good Idea Fairy” and it’s horrific fallout. I paid for the game, I’d like to be able to play it now. In the future, how about an “opt out” option? Or maybe a refund if this sort of thing is the status quo?

Dont you think you are overreacting? I did the living story alone with my lvl 40 (with level 20 gear) and a finished it all with no problems. Even if you are lvl 1-15, all you need to do is have a second person around. As for completing the map, you can easily dodge the sonic blasts, heck none of them are located at the same spot as a map exploration point.
The OP is not overreacting from the perspective of an actual new player in a zone supposed to be for new players. Like Poster Moletti.
It is 10 am CDT. On Fort Aspenwood, the zone is empty. All periscopes were up and unkilled. This means a new, low level player IS gated from Twinspur Haven vista.. and if they damage that particular scope, most times it will spawn a Molten Vet. There is no way to get to this vista without engaging the scope.
If they attempt to do the Ram mission for Joffe, they will enter the aggro of a scope.. and have KD spam while attempting a hard boss for low levels. This scope also covers the road, and will KD spam players who are also being attacked by Svanir popups. No prob to an 80.. but the zone is supposed to be for a level 8 new player. This scope will also, often, spawn level 16 Moltens.. the area is 8.
Farther up, a scope will spawn in range of an escort mission. At the same place a svanir ambush drops down. If there are Molten spawn, they will aggro the escort as well.. along with the normal ambushers. Again, an issue for a new player of that level.
Doing Frozen Maw, the scope will be in range of players engaging the south shamans. That scope will also be in range of players doing the Grawl Shaman DE.
Placement of these scopes was not well thought out. They overlap into content designed for low levels, making that content much harder, or impossible, to do at that low level (not downleveled players).

The real problem is spawning a level 16 gold mob in a level 8 area. For those saying a downleveled player will have no problem, let me just say that my level 80 warrior with toughness gear was being 2 shot as I was being KD by the veteran. So don’t BS the guy, this is not fair to a new character in any way. It took a group of 6 downleveled 80s to beat that level 16 mob and all of us were downed several times, because our hits were doing minimal damage, while its hits were 1 or 2 shotting us. This was a coordinated effort of a guild working together. That is not right. Plus the position of this vet made it nigh impossible not to aggro him.
The periscopes are poorly placed, forcing players to have to defeat them in order to complete zones, and don’t just say go to a different starter zone. If I roled a Norn or a Charr, maybe it was because I wanted to experience their zone and right now it is nearly impossible without having a bunch of downleveled players around to handle all this crap. I have been on in the middle of the afternoon PDT, and run into these periscopes trying to complete hearts in the 1-5 area. How does a level 1-5 character deal with those periscopes want to tell me. If I didn’t know the area so well already, I would probably give up on the game. It is ridiculously hard right now.
Before you say learn to play, I have 4 level 80’s, world completion, and am mostly a PvE player, so I know how to play in the PvE world. I did do the instance at level 40 on my squishy thief and survive, but these veteran in the level 8 area are ridiculous and need to be fixed immediately. I have also posted it as a bug but based on ANet’s current response this won’t be fixed until the end of April.
The only problem I’ve seen with the “Defeat Molten Alliance forces” periscope event is the vet + 3 mobs combination. If the vet didn’t spawn, the event would be fine. Then it’d be 3 normal dredge / flame legion mobs per wave, which is fairly standard event fare. Not sure why they felt the need to throw a vet in there right off the bat and along with 3 other mobs. It should be either 3 mobs and no vet, or just a vet alone.
As for the placement of the periscopes… eh, I’m kind of torn. They’re definately placed near oft-travelled areas, but thats both good and bad. On one hand, it does mean they interfere with other events or aspects of completion on the map, which is bad. But it also means they’re easier to find and frequently encountered, which is good. Putting them off in less explored side areas would alleviete the issues with interference, but it would also greatly diminish how many people encounter them naturally (which makes the living story seem less active) and would make destroying them for the loot more of a chore. From the perspective of the story of the event it also wouldn’t make much sense to have them off in side areas, because the whole idea is that the Molten Alliance is spying on the people travelling through the area and living there. Hard to spy on people if the tower is 2 miles away from any road or civilization.
Use evade, and everything is solved. No really, use this, it’s so useful, and once you get to the scope spam your best skills to kill it.
Myself, I had no problems with the F&F instances, maybe my build allows quick and evasive actions.

This issue is not the scopes themselves, they are just annoying, it is the Molten alliance and its overpowered veteran bosses, and the location of the scopes interfering with other events and map completion.
SO you don’t have any issues with a level 16 gold mob when you are level 8. Please explain how evade is that useful against them, unless you can constantly spam it.
There is no “level 16 gold mob”. If it was even a real single silver unit, we would lose. Please check properly. Anyways i already posted here the strategy to beat them with a low level. You guys just want to rage.

You want to check your facts matey. My level 80 guardian fully kitted out with exotic gear came across some of these. First hit was blocked by Aegis as you’d expect, second hit was an instant defeat. She had been levelled down to 8 in a level 8 area, the mobs were level 16, one of them a vet. No level 8 can take a hit from a lvl 16 veteran.
The fact that you, personally, haven’t come across these doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Some of us have seen them and been flattened by them.

The name of the unit who killed you is standard Veteran Molten Brawler. I have been downed by them before. They are strong but not unbeatable. Use some strategy. Purple, Gold and Silver ranks don’t increase their damage just their Hp significantly.
Now, my lvl 40 with lvl 20 gear has farmed 120+ audio so far. 30 more and i’m done. My lvl 40 with lvl 20 gear is stronger than your lvl 80 guardian with full exotics? Or are you saying the 120 successful kills are just luck?
“Some of us have seen them and been flattened by them” Some of us are practice, plan and dont rely on gear and whining. Which are you?
BTW: My lvl 80 engi with rare trinkets just facerolls the Veteran Molten Brawlers with his wrench and crowbar. Skill difference bub.

I’ve come to the conclusion that your reading comprehension skills are somewhat lacking.
It wasn’t a standard veteran molten brawler. It was a veteran gunner and it was EIGHT LEVELS HIGHER THAN THE MAX LEVEL FOR THE AREA. What part of that simple statement are you having trouble understanding? Are you seriously suggesting that you can defeat a +8 veteran that can do that much damage? I don’t believe you.
And it’s never a good idea to go around calling people whiners. It just makes you look childish.

Note that some of the events do not scale properly. I’ve seen spots in which level 15…17 enemies spawn in level 7..9 areas. Those you can only avoid, as you can barely do any damage to them.
As for those scaled properly, I recommend to fight behind cover.
In both GW1 and GW2, the best defense is always the terrain. A rock, a tree, a slope. That’ll take care of projectiles, and once projectiles are obstructed, dealing with melee is easy.
I don’t have any trouble doing either the events or dealing with periscopes solo. You know why?
Because I’m level 80 and am going into combat with it in mind (stability is nice).
But that’s exactly it: I’m an experienced player and I have to take precautions to not get my kitten handed to me. In a low level zone. Where new players are first experiencing the world.
It is not a question of difficulty, yes, you can do it solo, even I can, and yes you can talk about your personal stories about how you’re so great. The thing is, this kind of stuff should not exist in a low level zone where people are still learning to play the game.
I understand the want to bring old players back to zones they haven’t probably been in a long while, and the whole drive behind living story, that’s cool. But it shouldn’t interfere with the new players coming into the game.
For the toast!
You guys are doing it wrong. Just turn on your commander tag and watch other players swarm in and kill it for you
To the original OP – yeah, timezone is the issue. Everyone in NA is asleep when you’re on. In fact, everyone’s asleep when I’m on too, cause I play after midnight on western time =(
For me, I personally like when I run into random stuff like this while questing. Maybe I’m a RP’er at heart.
Yeah they are a pain in the butt. However, I liked the challenge. Almost my whole time nowadays in the open world I have no real fear of dying or losing. While I still don’t think I’ll die to the pack of molten alliance plus the periscope, at least it provides for a good fight.
Don’t get me wrong… I can handle the mobs. I can handle the scopes. I wouldnt have 3 level 80s if I could not handle some level of technical challenge. It is the combination.
Scope has 1500 range and fires every 4 seconds. I can only dodge twice in that time since it takes ~6 seconds to charge a dodge.
Mobs are tough, but beatable. Even at level 8, I could probably beat them with decent gear.
But if you don’t get the scope down fast enough, it keeps you far enough away from the mobs that you cannot fight them. You take a swipe or two, you’re flattened. But if you back off to outside the scope range, they go all kitten and walk away.
Granted, the groups with vets are definitely to be avoided at low levels, but I soloed a ‘scope with my level 4 Engi in Plains the other day (flex) It felt pretty awesome. Had an actual newb (first character) ask me what the deal was with them, and I explained what was going on with the Molten Alliance and we partied up to track down and kill another one together. If more moments like that follow I have no issue with living story stuff being disruptive and encroaching into newbie areas, it’s sort of the point. This is what’s going on in the game world right now, it’s not walled-off and having no impact beyond a cinematic or something only max level players would ever see. Asking to “opt out” is pretty silly, it’s only affecting certain areas and you’re given the opportunity to easily and freely go to any other part of the world if you want nothing to do with it.
