Word is that this new flame and frost instance will be a limited-time deal, much like just about everything else that’s been added to the game lately.
This is a bad, bad move. How is this game supposed to look like it’s growing and being developed if nothing ever stays? Person A quits before flame and frost. Person A decides to come back after Flame and Frost has been turned off. Person A sees no new content. “Boo, this game doesn’t get development at all!”
I know that it, personally, leaves a bad taste in my mouth when we’re given content that so much dev-time was devoted to only to have much of it be temporary. Please ensure that at least the 5-man dungeon is permanent.
Yes, i kinda agree. one time things make the world living but we havent seen anything big that stays for permanent in months. IMO a good fix for the upcoming dungeon would be :
after the F/F arc is over the dungeon can still stay. Asuran technology could be used to “warp” people back in time to the final battle against the molten. a bit like the fractal technology. make a little in-game dialogue from the npc like “its good that people know what has happened to our world” and it would be a simple and effective fix that would make the content permanent and wouldnt mess with the living world/lore IMO
From the news in the other thread, it seems flame and frost will culminate in a new dungeon, and i doubt they’ll remove that. I think anet builds up on these stories so I while the building up to frost and flame might be a limited-time deal, the end result might not be so. but to be fair, we don’t have all the facts atm.
Don’t disturb me, I have a cat in me at the moment.
I read the dungeon will be available for a limited time only :/
Indeed, some sources says that it will be limited time only, while others do not. So until we have a confirmation from ArenaNet we don’t really know ^^
Do we repair signs and collect memento’s while getting knocked down every time we try to walk down a path in the dungeon? Because so far that’s the F&F experience :P

To be fair the two new instances that came out last time are okay, but not for the build up they got. I enjoyed them, but you know…I’d have enjoyed them more if I hadn’t expected them to be there. I didn’t enjoy them enough to repeat them. It’s not like I need more karma.
I dream of Orr changing over time and being reclaimed by normal flora & fauna.
Of course, this would also require re-writing the personal story so new characters aren’t necessarily fighting Zhaitan and his Risen forces late on in the game. Rather, the story would move on to one of the other Elder Dragons and Orr would stay permanently changed.
This would be ideal and would REALLY feel like players are actually influencing the world rather than playing through the same script over and over again.
Incredibly unlikely to happen mind you as they’ve invested quite a lot in the existing Zhaitan story line.
Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

I really really hope Flame and Frost is temporary. Those Sonic Periscopes are incredibly annoying.

This is something that I bet will happen in expansions. Players with the expansion will be able to go to ‘New Orr’ or ‘Old Orr’, and players who do not have the expansion will by default go to the old orr.

After the last update they are a lot easier tbh. The ones in starter area’s only damage a lil bit and the others don’t stun you (only knockback).
As for the OP. They indeed stated that the content itself will be limited, but it will leave permanent ‘marks’ on the world. As to what extend is currently unknown.
I would imagine doing something as in the lost shores event. After the event the new map was open to explore.
Now for the ’ dungeon’ we have to wait and see. but for the two instances. It might very well be that after the living story has ended the hatchery and cragstead is open for public as part of the map (so open the gate without entering an instance). Maybe even with a heart that remembers of the past events or a dynamic event.
There are facets of the content I would rather see to be gone. As for changing the world. Keeping new content forever doesnt help. So I’m just curious bout what they mean with an everlasting mark on the world :P
Arise, ye farmers of all nations
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
The thing with this temporary stuff is they’re well on their way to having a year of “temporary” stuff that can be available every year at x time.
I know flame and frost isn’t a seasonal holiday, but it could be used as such.
It wouldn’t make sense as a seasonal thing. And there have been other temporary things that have not/will not comeback, like that whole ancient karka thing that I actually ended up missing.
But, it still stands to reason that this new 5 man dungeon should not be temporary. I agree that all the overland content should go away, but the instance that it’s all culminating too should be permanent.
They are also working on permanent content, not only temporary. For example, last patch we had the WvW updates and guild missions; in this new one we are gonna get custom arenas and spectator mode (which are a need for sPvP). So its not like the game isnt evolving.
Rift did the same thing, though. There weren’t enough content so they just kept throwing events at us, while the worked on content. Each event ran just long enough till the next event started.
Unfortunately, all the events were basically daily quests with a currency for special rewards for that content. It wasn’t exactly thrilling stuff.
A week into it made me want to tear my eyes out. But eventually they did go on to release actual content…it just took time. I suspect the same will happen here. Busy stuff until they can actually produce new content.
Dungeon? SAB? That is a sort of aprils fools joke. We are lucky it stays the full month. It might return next year… not impossible.
I do not mind this temporary content and I think Flame and Frost is fine that way.
Yes they got to add permanent content too… they have added some if not all that much perhaps. I am sure more will come. I personally like the way ANet is doing things.
Life doesn’t stop being funny just because the dead can’t laugh.
Temporary events: Screwing people with lives over since forever. I do hope they don’t release anything else I want again from that kitten SAB if they do bring it back next year.

The Flame and Frost story has uninteresting characters and a forgettable story. The content that we’ve seen related to Flame and Frost is so lackluster that it probably won’t matter that the dungeon is temporary.
If something is to have impact it needs to change the world in a profound way. I don’t think they can do that with the resources they allocate to this project and the fear of changing just about anything.
The idea was to make living story one time events to give them some meaning for the ppl who did them and these ppl can tell new players about what was done before. The thing is that there should be a living story going on all the time.
Main : Jski Imaginary ELE (Necromancer)
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)
Server : FA
And the living story has been around for months now and you can still do ALL of it. You probably haven’t missed it for another month. So if you want to do it you can.
I don’t mind the temporary content, but when it comes at the exclusion of permanent content then it is a problem.
Generally, this is my opinion too. Temporary content is fine, as long as sometimes there’s also permanent stuff added. Halloween, wintersday, flame and frost, SAB… all extra content, but nothing stays.. I hope May will bring something that’s here to stay.
I just dont think an actual full-fledged dungeon would be temporary. The dungeon design lends itself to being permanent by having the story mode (what we do next month, beating the MA) and then several explorables for different problems that arise afterwards. So IF it is really a dungeon in this update and not some story instance cave, I bet it stays.
I think the temporary content is actually a good thing. It gives some people an incentive to actually play the said content or at least try it out. Besides, new content becomes old and stale once you’ve done the same thing for months. I also disagree with quitting before -insert content here- comes out and coming back after it’s turned off and saying “boo no content” because A-net has been pretty good with adding new temp content as the old temp content goes away. I took a break from gw2 during the Halloween content, and came back to giant enemy invisible crabs that ransacked Lion’s Arch. In the end. It was still new content to me.
The way i see it, SaB goes away at the end of this month, and gets put on the back burner so that the content designers can refine it, add more levels and what have you while the “new” temp content that was just released is keeping us at bay. Then when the time is right, they re-release SaB with new rewards and more levels.
“The dungeon is also geared towards replayability. There are a variety of different enemies that will change randomly and subtly. There are differences in the groups you’ll face, and even in the voiceover dialog within the dungeon itself to make sure it’s not exactly the same time and again. There are also, of course, lots of unique rewards to the Molten Weapons Facility dungeon. As the story itself progresses through the end of April and into May, players will notices that the entrances to the dungeon itself will change (to signify that players are storming in and destroying these facilities). When the story comes to its crescendo, the final location of the dungeon and its entrance for repeated play will be set.”
I don’t see the dungeon being temporary. Until ANet says otherwise, that’s going to be my assumption.
Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”

They have already confirmed that it will get removed when Flame and Frost is over.
The dungeon itself will be available for a limited amount of time, as it is tied to the ongoing story. The possibility of revisiting the content is not out of the question, however. It just becomes a matter of determining where and when it makes sense to do so.
Well, if you want a place that evolves over time, then someone won’t “be there”. News players a few years from now will hear legends of amazing past battles and loots. Speaking of loots, you’ll never get it all so don’t worry too much about that. Besides, this isn’t a DUNGEON dungeon per se, as it was designed by a different team. If people really want it back they’ll have to wait until it shows up in fractals or wait until Anet decides to open it up again.
Who knows? By the time June rolls around, you probably won’t care a whole lot for the flame and frost dungeon anymore. And if you can’t be there, it’s not the worst thing ever in my opinion. Sometimes priorities are more important in life! Happy hunting!

Couldnt agree more! Im not interessted in the flame and frost stuff. So all the last patches hasnt been doing kitten for me. Except some bug fixes. And this game wont get any new stuff either.
If I compare with stories I like to read, I like both short stories and novels. There are some authors who do both really well. It would be insulting to those authors if I went up to them and said ‘stop with the short stories already, it is taking away too much time from the novels!’ They would call the police first, second they would talk about ‘that nutcase’. Let the company find its footing with this game. I got all my monies worth a long time ago. If you feel you have not, fine. Start looking for other games that fit your needs.
I agree, they should stop with temporary content, they could start by not getting rid of sab f.e.
SAB starts to look reeeeeally gimmicky after just a few runs. You don’t really think they should leave it in its current form, do you? No offense to the ANET team that made it—it’s awesome and has a whip (the whi kitten uper cool but the animation is totally quircky and hilarious)—but it’s just not that great. Mario 64 was similar and was just a way better game than SAB. Which is another way of saying SAB has little staying power. If it was left in, no one would play it after a while. Actually, some people would: the ones farming obsidian shards / stones / crystals for legendary weapons. But that’s about it.
Hopefully when they bring it back, SAB will be more polished and stuff, but right now leaving it in isn’t a good choice.

Permanent content? Like Guild Missions, World XP, WvW specialisation tracks and now custom arenas and spectator mode?
The Living Story is designed to push the world’s story forward, so it makes sense that some events don’t happen endlessly. Braham and Rox will complete their little story arcs and something else will happen that’ll bring new content to the world.
Smoothy, I think you missed my point. The developers of GW2 are working on permanent content that comes in a variety of types. On top of the content I mentioned in my last post, we’ve also seen a new zone (Southsun) and a new dungeon (Fractals of the Mists) added permanently to the game. Both of those fit into your prefered paradigm. Arguably the jumping puzzles that have been added permanently, such as the Secret Garden, also fit into your idea of whats fun. Perhaps the old overhaul to AC too.
Ultimately, the developers are working on a variety of projects of which the Living Story is just one. The temporary content suits a variety of players who don’t like the endless repetition, who complete content and look for the next thing or who simply want to see the world evolve. I think it’s nice that GW2 is catering to a variety of players.
I agree. While temporary content taking place in the world makes the guild wars 2 universe feel like it is living and breathing and constantly going through stages, the issue is that if patches do not leave behind a significant amount of permanent content as they go along the game will not feel like it is progressing. It will feel as if new events and activities are being introduced, but because they do not stay the game never really grows, it just stays in place in terms of the amount of content available.
Updates like Fractals of the Mists give us brand new experiences that players are still enjoying to this day! Updates like temporary dungeons (possibly this Flame & Frost dungeon) will never be enjoyed again, and as a result this possibly great content will not become a permanent facet of the game. Do we really want Guild Wars 2 to be known as a game where all of the really cool, cutting edge, new content is something that you can’t play at all because it goes away after a certain period of time?
So, if we’re going to do this ‘give us something cool, then take it away and never let us play it again’ approach to game design, can we at least see a reasonable portion of each update dedicated to giving permanent content like the fractals or new SPVP maps that permanently affect us? Players still play those today.
yeh, southsun cove WAS great in the opening weekend. now theres pretty much nothing to do there :P but i see your point and agree now, i just hope secretly ANet is working on “big” content (zones/dungeons/etc) aswell
Yes, i kinda agree. one time things make the world living but we havent seen anything big that stays for permanent in months. IMO a good fix for the upcoming dungeon would be :

I don’t even think we need asuran technology to go back. You know how many times we’ve tried fixing Ascalonian Catacombs? Nothings changing there.
I’m really happy about always receiving new content, but I wish things like this would stay….
I agree with this post, I want to see A net just focus on permanent contents over temporary contents. All their hard work on temporary contents and just goes to waste when the time is up is insane. Imagine how much more permanent contents this game would have if A net put their mind to it. GW2 need some seriously beef up.
Side note, kinda funny that A net talk about changing world forever, during the event in halloween, where lions statue blows up, after serveral month, the statue has been complete fix, but none of the NPC mentioning about the terrible incident at all. That’s not changing the world forever, in game NPC does not care about it, why should us?
I am in agreement too, its much better/more efficient use of the developers time to add permanent content that players can do over and over again if they should wish to do so.
It means GW2 over a period of time will build up huge amounts of content and hopefully retain more players, attract more players back to play and continue to attract new players.
The only possible negative would be if the playing population gets too thinned out with all the content on offer…however that could easily be solved…a large amount of players go where the best loot is, so each month you could have better loot zones…
So one month you may get double chances of loot if you dungeon run, the next month if you WvW, the next doing Jumping Puzzles and so on and so forth…
They could even use this idea to help with the precursor problem or the lodestone problem or anything else that’s wrong in the economy…
Even if the dungeon is only available for a short period of time they may be able to put the design to a number of uses. It could eventually become a fractal level. Explorable dungeon paths could be added but without another story mode to open them.
I’m not going to read any more posts but just to tell the OP that temporary content is awesome! Just telling people the memories you had made doing certain content.
Think of it like real life: “Aw man! There was this one time I was at this event and this stuff happened! It was crazy!” Its the memories that make it special. Then something new comes out that creates new memories and so on and so forth.
If stuff stayed in the game, it would be this huge file to download that would keep getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and new players would spend days on end downloading the content that you want to stay in the game.
I look at it like real life. Stuff comes and goes (Like Holidays), and it will be back the next year or something different with a twist will show up.
While you make a good point OP, you seem to forget something: that there is new temporary content every month. EVERY single month since the Lost Shores/Halloween, Anet has made of point of putting SOMETHING in game. You argument would make sense if after Flame and Frost, there is no more development at all. However:
Person A quits before flame and frost. Anet turns F&F off. The next month, Anet releases a new living story. Person A decides to come back after Flame and Frost has been turned off, and plays the new living story content. Player A like the living story content and decides that perhaps Player A shouldn’t take as long of breaks so they don’t miss such content.
That seems much more likely than your scenario.
If you did what they did, you would have what they have.
You have what you have because you do what you do.
