Q:

I missed the first two months of it. I’m not really sure what Flame and Frost actually is. I’ve never seen an MMO do something like it before.

I will never play WvW until Map Completion there is removed.

Flame and Frost is a story taking place in real time, giving the illusion of a living world.

In the average MMO, these stories would be delivered as a series of quests which could be completed as fast as you could do them. Unlike normal quests however, in the living story, you have to wait for the NPCs to play out their roles. For example, in a normal quest, if the quest tells you to go do something while the NPC does something else, that NPC will already be done and waiting for you to finish. In a living story however, you have to wait for an unknown duration for that NPC to do what it needs to do. Of course, in reality however, you’re not actually waiting for it to play out, you’re waiting for the content to be developed and released, at which point that NPCs job has been completed.

Other MMOs have had similar type of content. For example, back in the early days of WoW, the server had to work together to play out a series of quests to open the gates of Ahn’Qiraj, a raid. Real time content is very taxing however, since everyone ends up showing up at the same time, so they tend not to do it. GW2 encountered this problem with their first real time event, the karka invasion. As a result, these real time events have been broken up into segments, giving enough time for everyone to participate while also splitting them up. What they ended up with was a real time event that lasts weeks and takes place over several months rather than taking place over several days and only being accessible at specific times.

For simplicity, just think of the living story as an book, where you’re given a chapter each month.
