Kill ten rats

I would have prefered the “kill ten rats” way in place of the RNG, anytime.
There’s a difference between
‘go into that field and kill 10 random rats in a field full of them’
and
‘there are 10 prisoners trapped in there. rescue them’
To be honest it’s pretty hard to completely avoid the “Kill 10 rats” approach completely because it’s so vague any task which involves more than 1 person/object could qualify.
The important differences between the usual “kill 10 rats” type of quest and things like this (IMO anyway) is that firstly it’s not the entire point of the dungeon and secondly you can save them all at once while passing through.
If it was done the ‘traditional’ way we’d each be asked to save 10 prisoners from a large group (where more prisoners were always appearing to replace those who were saved) and we’d have to escort them out one at a time, then we’d get our reward and inexplicably leave all the rest still locked up for the next random hero who happened to come along.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
The prisoner collection isn’t exactly a scavenger hunt like the “10 rats” thing. It’s more of a mechanism to make sure players can’t just run by all the fights.
I just thought it was funny. kill 10 rats.. collect 10 prisoners.. lol

Or go collect ten hearts, and the drop rate is so terrible, you wonder how all these heartless animals are walking around…
I’m glad that stuff isn’t in gw2. I hate poor drop rate quests. There’s a reason I don’t play those mmos anymore. :P
Altaholic, can never have just one!

…You mean as opposed to ‘Go do some permutation of killing 10 rats, baiting 10 rat traps, and/or heal 10 cheesemakers attacked by rats’? ;-)
A lot of the renown hearts, to be honest, are still ‘kill 10 rats’ at heart, but dressed up very prettily so that you have to look under all the makeup to see it. :-)

I usually do a bit of all the stuff when doing the hearts. like for example, the farmer renown heart just outside shaemoor; I kill some of the worms, feed some of the cows, and water some of the plants, usually change it up for alts but its never the same amount
but yes, its prettied up very nicely.

That is the fun part of reading what fanboys write on forums. They dont really understand the “kill 10 rats” is just dressed in a different way. “Help Farmer Josef to clean the area by killing centaurs”. You change rats for centaurs, you change the number for a progression bar and… voilĂ ! How innovative!
That makes GW2 a generic MMO: a childish and more beautiful version of Lotro. Unlike GW1, that was indeed a different and awesome and challenging game. Too bad GW2 killed GW1 and didnt take anything from it other than lore, classes and skill names. We lost a wonderful game and in exchange we got a generic MMO…
Idea of collecting prisoners in this way is different, but… Nothing wrong with the ‘bring me 10 spider legs’ jive. The only thing that makes that bad, is when games that rely on it for 90% of their quests is when the game becomes garbage. Beside the guild mechanics, that sort of thing is why i didn’t like Atlantica Online. Should have been “Collect 10 Units Online”.
But yeah. saving 10 prisoners as said was good for making sure you didn’t just run past stuff. Otherwise… When WE completed it, only one sole prisoner made it out with us when the place went down… …
I know, that part’s off the subject, but funny. “Save everyone! … … … Oops. Only one of the freed lived. And a random human at that… Eh… I have a bug, you have red hair, players did all the work, we like swords and stuff… We’re fine. It’s all that counts.”
I thought this ‘kill 10 rats’ post was going to be about, you know, actual cliched mmo fetch quests. They do exist in GW2. (I’m looking at you Sonic Periscopes and Volunteer).
But the objective (in a dungeon no less) to rescue ten prisoners, many of which offer varying dialogue hardly counts as a fetch quest… They even help you to fight.
For the toast!
Anyone notice this?
ArenaNet said that you would not have to do that whole ‘kill ten rats’ then..
‘Free 10 prisoners’
lol
Good thing too, otherwise we’d be killing 10 prisoners….

I think a lot of people would prefer ‘Kill 10 Dev Job Positions’ at this point…
