Anyone know where to get this item? It supposedly gives you unlimited uses on all types of ore. Someone linked it in LA today but when I asked where he got it he wouldn’t answer. I hope it’s not RNG.

That’s fairly expesive, especially if you have multiple characters, even more so if it’s a limited time item (which it almost certainly is – limited time deals push sales).

800 gem is very expensive. If i buy 1 ori mining pick with 100 charges a day, it will take about 400 to 500 days to get to a total of 800 gems worth of mining picks.

Only worthwhile in the long run if you still play this game in 2 years and mine everyday.

I can justify the purchase of it…I spend a lot of time in Orr/Frostgorge, as well as daily Orichalcum runs. I mean, it’ll take a while to pay off, but it’s worth it in the long run.

People have done the math. It’s almost a guarantee this item will cost you more money than it nets it. It’s only value is convenience (and even if you WP freely to buy more picks it would take a long time to regain your investment). At 800 gems this is a financially poor investment. Most people would be better off dropping 30g on orichalcum.

Wait. So for 800 Gems, I now never need to carry around three picks (Steel, Mithril, Orichalcum) and keep track of their uses left while hunting Ori nodes?

. . . when does this leave the store? I need to wait for my next paycheck.

The special effects while mining are kind of cool. Pointless, but cool.

Do other players see it as well? Or only you? What you see other players mining seems buggy as it is (you usually see people cutting down trees with sickles or whatever) so it’d be funny if you saw people harvesting plants with a flaming pick or something, heh.

10 bucks for a pick. It looks cool, no arguments here, but considering the price.. It would be nice if it at least gave us a couple for alts. That, or at least multi-tool for wood and herbs.

I bought one for each of my 5 characters. I don’t really care about the special effects one gets when mining with it (in fact, I think it’s kind of annoying), but the convenience of never, ever having to worry about buying mining picks again or having to swap between Mithril/Ori picks is worth it.

That said, I strongly urge people to read Shiren’s post above. Cost-wise, the Molten Alliance picks are NOT worth it unless you plan on staying with the game for a long time and playing regularly. I played GW1 for 7 years (technically 8 now), and if GW2 turns out to have even half that longevity, I’ll probably get incredible value out of the MA picks. If, however, you’re the type of gamer who moves on after 6 months to a year, the picks are not a worthwhile purchase.

I think it is cool and properly priced. If it were any cheaper, it may be “too good” of a thing. If I have the spare $ I’ll probably be one for my Ele (my main character) but I doubt I’ll get it for any others. I hate having to carry tons of tools around and it will be nice to be able to mine all ores with the same pickaxe (I hate using my black lion or oricalchum or such on mithril or lower). I bet we will see more tools like this in the future, maybe even another pickaxe with different animation.

Because of inflation and the fact that farming ore takes time, I suspect even if you did play for seven years, your gems would be better off being spent on gold and then buying items on the TP and flipping them (currently the exclusive SAB skins and the Flame and Frost dyes are good picks). Their value in a year’s time will be greater than profits you make from these picks, the added bonus is you won’t need to spend your time farming orr every day on all of your characters. Gems have an added bonus because they are incredibly valuable right now.

I can’t see a value for money deal for these picks right now, with the small exception of someone who only buys one and uses it extensively.

With the risk of this item becoming redundant with a higher tier of ore being added later on, combined with the fact that you would need to use it a considerable amount of times almost every day, I can’t see this as anything other than a cosmetic and convenience item. The funny thing is, WoW players can get this item (without the cosmetic bonuses) within 10 minutes of creating their character. It’s funny how primitive some of the GW2 design is.

I’m not a TP player though; I find the thought of researching markets and calculating spreadsheets utterly boring and use it only to see if somebody wants my loot for more than what I can get for it at the vendor. I bought the MA picks purely for their convenience value, not out of any desire for cost savings. I just believe that their use lifetime, combined with their convenience, make it a worthwhile purchase for me. Every player needs to make their own decision regarding these though.

As I posted in another thread, if (and it’s a big “if”, because that essentially means they’ll be embarking on a gear treadmill) ANet decides to introduce T7 or higher nodes, I believe the Molten Alliance picks will be upgraded to also work on these nodes, as they were sold under the premise that you would never need to buy mining picks ever again. (And if not, then I’m sure going to lobby ANet to get them upgraded!)

So when an item is RNG based, like the F&F weapons, people complain about the RNG and say they’d rather purchase it directly.
When you can purchase it directly, people complain that it’s too expensive (despite being far cheaper than the comparable RNG items).
When an item gives actual power to your character people complain about others buying an advantage, but also complain about cosmetic/convenience items not having enough practical use…

They’ve handled this mining pick in the best way they have for similar items in a very long time.

I’m a fan of this item, I think they got it pretty close to right. I hate finding out I’m out of harvesting tools, hate having to switch tools to harvest different tiers of mats, hate having to carry multiple sets of tools, etc.

I bought mine just based on the convenience, before I knew there were effects as well. I may have bought one just for the effects had I known

Bottom line, I hope they don’t wait too long before releasing unlimited versions of the other tools as well.

All that said, I do appreciate those who did the math on the number of swings, nodes, etc. Very interesting, and I do like knowing what value I do or don’t get from my purchase. In this case, for me, the convenience/effects are worth what I paid.

Sounds like they’ve designed a really kittenty harvesting system in the game and are charging you 800 gems to make it on par (for one character only) to the system WoW has used for over eight years now.

What the heck is everybody complaining about? You pay for the convenience. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it; if you want it, buy it.

I think it’s one more thing done right by Anet. In no way does this make one player better than another, but it provides a big convenience for somebody if they want to spend the gold (or $$) on it.

It’s in the store till may 13th, once the gold→ gem prices drop, I’ll be buying mine.

Why don’t you just use Orichalcum picks for everything? They cost 4s a pick, or 4c per mine. As long as copper ore cost more than 2c per ore, you won’t lose money while mining.

A very good question. Here’s an honest answer:

Because I don’t sell my resource gathering proceeds. I make use of them. Though I have yet to find a really good use for the butter.

The majority of people here are saying that the pick is too expensive. Honestly I can’t imagine why.

Considering that a normal MMO subscription would be equivalent to 1200 gems a month, dropping a tenner on an item that makes it so I never have to buy another pick is a no brainer.

If you can’t afford it then don’t buy it, but don’t try to make it sound like it’s not a great deal.

I wouldn’t call that the “right” tool necessarily. It’s fine if you want to use the minimum-required tier of tool (and yeah, I agree that’s OCD), but it’s equally “right” to use a higher-grade tool, especially for those who value convenience over cost.

For example, it costs just over 1c/use to use mithril axes/picks instead of copper ones — I’d rather pay that modest amount to avoid keeping track of multiple tools, number of uses, and otherwise micromanaging my inventory.

Because the WoW system of everyone going after the same exact nodes all the time was SO MUCH FUN. Gosh I loved the bots that ported around underground taking everything or fighting a mob while a super jerk stole it. Yep! WoW’s system was totally great!

Go to your room!

I think the reason people complain about the mining pick really is the fact it is soulbound on use! I know that is my only complaint and I’d have paid an extra 200 gems to get rid of that and just keep it as account bound at all bloody times. I have 8 characters I love to play and asking me to spend this much gold/money for each one is annoying.

Yes, we get it the people who play the TP as in EVERY MMORPG TO DATE and people who spam something like CoF are loaded. You know what we stinking got that kinda stuff back in EQ. I’m sick of games catering to those kittens even when I was one of them. I do not want it to cater to the WoW casual but I’d give up the gold to gem system just so stuff like this would be account bound over stinking soulbound on use. I’d also give it up so we see less gambling garbage that idiots blow all their gold on designed to drain peoples gold and more just straight up selling me the bloody stinking unique dyes I want. Once stinking again 8 characters and more then one that would love to fool around with this colors Anet.
