Good day,

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/march-2013/

Genuine question .. are Rox’ eyes going to look like that? Right now, she looks like a comic-stylised character. I’ll have a hard time taking her serious, and importantly; immerse myself in the lore you’re writing into the game.

Thanks.

I like her just how she is, like my japanese cartoons.

Thanks.

Really though, she looks ridiculous compared to the rest of the charr in the game, even the norn looks off in some way I can’t put my finger on. Unless there’s a reason for her eyes to be anime sized, I don’t see why they should be.

What the kitten?

Maybe she’s supposed to look young and her head is all weird in proportion. Trouble is, the other cubs don’t look like that… so she looks like an asura experiment.

She looks terrifying. Very different from most Charr. Maybe thats intentional to make her stand out more, though. I hope she doesn’t have a high-pitched crazy voice or something, though.

Im pretty sure its just the aspect ratio that makes her look odd, if you really want to test out maximum weirdness, go roll a charr and max the eye size.

The aspect ratio would make her whole body look off, though. Its only her huge eyes and “cutesy” face that look particularly odd, at least to me.

Her mission is to infiltrate a Hylek camp.

So she has something to do with the Flame and Frost story it appears but they weren’t specific. Braham’s blurb is much more traditional of what you’d expect for the heroic NPC ally for the coming story arc and is more specific in its relevance to the coming conflict, his characterisation so far seems far more traditional for a norn.

They seem to be trying to characterise Rox as a kind of outsider. A gladium with no warband, sent on a solo mission (presumably), even her profession as a ranger (her pet is her only team mate) fits in with this characterisation. I suspect her strange appearance is another way they are trying to characterise her differently from other charr, to play into the fact that she has no warband and is now on a solo mission which the player will no doubt help out with.

Side note. If it turns out Braham is a warrior and not a guardian (he uses a mace and shield in the screen shot) these two would be a mirror to Rytlock and Eir.

Ah yes, the pseudo-racism thread. I knew this was coming. . .

On a serious note. I think diversity is important in this game. We definitely need more of it. Right now everything tends to look and feel the same, from character design to the general atmosphere. You just don’t get any sense that the supposed diversity in Tyria actually carries any weight. It’s melds too well together to be appealing enough.

That’s probably why some people can’t get into the lore of it. Not enough depth to either side of the spectrum. It’s like a giant color wheel with a grey core that takes up 50% of the wheel. =P

During the Betas, Arenanet posted an article titled “The Artistic Origin of the Charr”, describing the direction they chose to go in regards to charr design. It is no longer available. However, there was a section describing the design of female charr. It was stated that Arenanet’s artists experimented with, and then rejected, concepts of sexy and concepts of cute for female charr. They decided that the females needed to look sleeker and more graceful than the males, but equally as ferocious and powerful.
Although this article isn’t available, arenanet has stated much the same in their book, “The Making of Guild Wars 2”. And I quote:
“Perry realized the females needed to feel as large and fierce as the males, but refined and sharpened to be feminine.”
Rox does not look large and fierce, she looks like a cute kitten. She does not look refined and sharp, she looks like an anime cat.

I personally welcome attempts to break free from stereotypes. It will be nice to see a character that doesn’t fit into this cookie cutter, cliché and shallow writting they’ve been churning out so far. Honestly, I’m well and truly sick of the female charr in GW2, they all seem like the same person to me. If they characterise Rox in any way close to a cute and fluffy kitty cat I’ll praise them for breaking the tedious mould they’ve set so far.

One reason why Eir was one of the more interesting characters in GW2 is because she’s not the typical norn. She’s wise and tactful, not some brash brute that charges into battle skull first. As important as it is to flesh out your world and have key characters represent the lore and characteristics of each race so players can become accustomed to them, carbon copy clichés make for terribly boring allies.

I hope they dye her armour pink and give her baby versions of ranger pets (maybe a bear cub or a leopard cub) and get a cutesy girls voice actor for her. Oh and she should refer to herself in the third person. Well maybe that’s going overboard, but seriously, a female charr that is characterised as cute would be a breakthrough for GW2.

I beg to differ. Female characters have been portrayed as either sex dolls or cute kittens in almost every online game there is. The harsh, serious female charr in Guild Wars 2 are a refreshing change from the sort of thing you see in Tera, WoW, and so on. There shouldn’t be cute & cuddly little cat female charr any more than there should be female charr with double-d’s, lipstick, and thongs. It just doesn’t belong as part of the race.

The part that I find weird are not the eyes but… she has male horns? They’re too big and pointed forward (like many male horns and none female horns), and the way they’re attached to her head feel strange, like if she was wearing a helmet instead of having horns…

Is she some kind of… Charr transvestite? It looks weird on a female model.

Even with the eyes she would look more natural with female horns. Maybe even the eyes would look right with the correct size of horns so she isn’t too caricatured.

Poor girl. That’s okay Rox, I’ll be her friend! Both Dinky and I. <3

I definitely think something is off about her eyes, but I don’t see why anyone should look down upon ‘cute’ or any other types of options Anet decides to add. Charr are much more diverse than most believe them to be. If they weren’t, Anet wouldn’t have allowed this gal to look the way she does. They are the very people who created the entire race after all. Even then, we may never see her features ourselves if kept exclusive to the character. Which would be a shame in my opinion, as I cannot understand the downside in more variety. If her face were to be made into a character option, you could always adjust it to be more bestial as well. Besides, It’s not like it will break your game and affect how your own character will look if somebody else chooses to be what is ‘cute’ or ‘ugly’ in your opinion. Everyone has their own preference. It’s clearly portrayed in this thread. There are some players here who absolutely love the big horns and/or eyes, others believe they should be kept to males only or not be in the game at all.

I think the big problem is that Charr’s more cat like fechers more often look like Big cat’s (lion tager leperd ETC) this looks like the face of a house kitten.

that said i still think its the GOO GOO anime eyes that F her face up so bad at take “cute” to that stupid level. shrink the eyes down a little bit and she would still be “cute” but not so silly looking.

It may be the hard truth, but what the Charr look like is up to Anet to decide and expand on, not us. I personally perceive her as a little wild cat more so than a house kitten. That is just my opinion of course.

I agree that she looks ridiculous. Her eyes are very uncharacteristic of the race, and they throw her facial proportions way out of whack. I have no problem with it if she’s supposed to look disfigured as part of her story (runt of the litter?), but if she’s supposed to merely represent a young Charr that is otherwise pretty typical of the race, something is very, very wrong.
