FoTM Leaderboards (Some Privacy)
Yeah, I tried to address this in my post. This is something I’m also very concerned about. Please allow us to opt out.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
As far as I’m concerned nobody asked for the leaderboard. Many people have exact same issue as you or don’t really care for leaderboard at all. We played fractals till now for us, not for leaderboards. So Opt Out ability would be nice to be honest. Maybe as a prompt question when you first go inside fractals, or have a NPC that allows you to Opt Out or Opt back in in case you feel like you want to be included at later time.
Another idea would be Opting everyone out and have them join the leaderboard only if they want the first time they walk into fractals.
I would also like to opt out. I don’t want people to know my stats or know that I’m high level in fractals.
I’m curious, does anybody WANT the leaderboards or look forward to it? Why?
nope. what was actually quite cool about playing fractals up in the firstplace was that the top Player actually all knew each other. You knew all ppl that were really high till about 40 than there were fixed Groups and you heard against from em when all reached the cap it was somehow really fun to talk how they did things and stuff since all had diffrent Groups and you have had locked Groups since Players with lower reward Level coulnd’t join higher ones.
I Need to admit.. if ever this will be an infinite Level dungeon and the dungeon will not be about who has the best gear but about who can beat lvl 231 than I’m in for leaderbaords. because they would make sence if it’s about the challenge you have beaten and not the time you have spent lvling up:)

For once, I agree with you. Let’s hope you are right.
I don’t think there is anything to worry about. And it’s easier to detect cheaters if it’s public.

What does this even mean?
I’m sorry, but it is totally legitimate of high fractal runners to not want this to be too public.

Uhhh what? I know people are trying to get rid of the leaderboards so that a reset wouldn’t happen or at least wouldn’t be logic.
1. Your account name.number can easily be gathered. In fact under your argument you should stop using the public forums right now because it is public and someone can gather information about your account to hack you. I think that is just silly.
2. How does the leaderboard change the security of your account? Leaderboards are as secure as the forums and both are public. I don’t see anyone losing sleep when they are using the forums because they fear they might be hacked using something public. I don’t see anyone stopping their use of the forums including the OP who post numerious times. The security of ones account depends on the security of ArenaNet, which lets assume it is since if it is not then everyone’s account is affected. The other part of the player with strong passwords and a secure computer. Accounts are valuable for various reasons to hackers beyond what they have on their account.
3. Most people don’t get spam from the leaderboards including spvp players unless they post on the forums with a guide or stream already.
4. How does leaderboards change anything? Fact is it doesn’t. Although I did enjoy the attempt at fear mongering.

The point is that they really serve no purpose. Not that is a security issue. Unless they wanted to use the leaderboards to get rid of all the cheaters. That would be useful.
As they are right now leaderboards are mostly cheaters. Why even have them around.
The leaderboards would be pointless if you could opt out of it. “Oh I am rank 1… wait there are x people higher than me who opted out”

Well! At least there’s agreement there!

If people can see who is high level, those people can be subject to constant PMs asking for help.
If a lvl 30 wants to do lvl 50, all they have to do is wait two weeks, then PM a bunch of people on the list level 50 and ask to join their group, completely destroying the point of the reset that is “forcing us to earn our rank” in the new content.
As they are right now leaderboards are mostly cheaters. Why even have them around.
What “cheaters”? As far as I know the leaderboards concern fractal level, if someone has a high fractal level they are a cheater? The only type of cheating I can think of is skipping certain (personal) levels and that’s not possible.
AP leaderboards, PvP Leaderboards, etc. Those are currently populated by people who found ways to “game” the system. For example, fight their second account in PvP to give themselves a high W-L ratio, PvP level, etc. Or, Set up a macro to sit AFK killing mobs to get weapon master. Or, set up a second account and get into a match of Kegbrawl with themselves, etc.
As for fractal, implementing a leader board would have little use. What would happen would be those who find way to game the system in questionable fashion will probably be at the top. You might have the occasional truly skilled player there, but I guarantee that the vast majority of the board will be from people who abused the system.
And for clarity, I am not calling people with high fractal levels cheaters. I called those skilled. There are many of those, but I am pretty sure those guys, would probably not be the top of the leaderboard.
The IDEA of a leaderboard sounds great, until you realize is not populated by the real “leaders” of said board. It is populated by the people who have mastered cheating to get their name on the board.
The leaderboards would be pointless

Not for me. I like comparing myself with others. Maybe that is why I got about 16k AP now.
And lot about the gaming the system. I never used macros or dual accounts. I even report all exploits and exploiters.
Ok thank you that i have another thing to worry about :-D Before i didn’t liked leaderboards becouse they want wipe our progress for something that is absolutely not needed. But now i dont like it becouse i will get my progress wiped + it can lure hackers to my accout :-D THAAANK YOU :-D

Cool, then they should add an option to opt out, like we are asking for.
I can opt out and keep my personal reward level of upper 40s because I don’t care about leaderboards, and you can compete starting at 30. Win-win-win
I would also like to opt out. I don’t want people to know my stats or know that I’m high level in fractals.
I’m curious, does anybody WANT the leaderboards or look forward to it? Why?
Im with you, and for your second part I have to ask also, why? I don’t understand the mentality to take the time and glance over some list of players I don’t know or care about? Why would I bother even looking up my own toons?
This is Anet game not mine, I just fail to see the purpose and use of resources for this.

Are people still interested in the PvP, achievement leaderboards at all? I think I checked those once after they came out and thought wow… I don’t care about any of this.
Anet posted email addresses instead of player names due to glitch in guild menu I don’t know how much them monitor privacy but…
If you post info on internet you should expect to lose a little.
As the matter of fact I would also like an opt out option from AP leaderboards and PvP leaderboards (not that I believe this will happen). Some people like me do tasks for pure sake of completion and not to compete with others. In fact I have a high aversion to competition becouse I believe it leads to hostilities between players. If it would be possible, one could select an opt out option and then his account score would still be on the leaderboard but marked as Anonymous. This would still keep leaderboards intact for those who like to see their place in the line while also hide those who wants the stay in the background.
Do leader in leader board get hate messages or guild recruitments? I honestly don’t even look at them other then WvW which I use other websites to monitor the progress.
Dear ANET,
I would like to OPT-OUT of the leaderboard if it is implemented in a public form or at least have some privacy in the leaderboard.
(We dont have a choice about the leaderboard – its coming that we know). Why?
If it is a public leader board – e.g. like the following:
1 = ‘My name is FOTM’ (in-game character name)
2 = ‘Volcanarous’
3 = ‘I play too much FoTM’There is a big security risk (IMO) that players on the public leader board will be bombarded in-game by players with PMs/Messages or hack-attempts to steal someones account (as they are known to be good at what they do).
At minimum please require players to type in a players name to find out where they are in the leader board.
Many Thanks,
You could make the same argument against the achievement points or the sPvP leaderboards, and those problems haven’t arisen from either of them.

Guild Recruitment, yes.
Somehow it feels like ArenaNet made the leaderboards for themselves to check if players are going over their ’’intended’’ fractal level.
- and if they do, it’s time for an investigation and ban those players if they don’t play the way ArenaNet intended them to play. Aka, stand in fire and take agony hits.
yea, it didn’t need it, at all. Like who even cares that people are x in fotm and isn’t level 50 the max now anyways? SO what’s the point.
Ask if those people on achievement leaderboards get bombarded, this is silly imo. Leaderboards are pointless imo but your concerns feel even more silly to me.
leader board is pointless for fotm.

All of this is true. I’ve seen people doing it. And now they’re very, very high ranked on the leaderboards. Though some do it without second accounts and macros, they find different, equally easy ways.
The AP leaderboard has the same problem though, shows your account name, and it even shows your account name on the forums, I think it was done this way for Anet to track you easier on the forums to ingame,
The leaderboard if they want to make it public but private could easily make it that when you look at it its something like this,
xxxxxx fotm lvl 80 ranked 1
xxxxxx fotm lvl 78 ranked 2
yourself form lvl 77 ranked 3^
xxxxxx form lvl 77 ranked 3
So that you only see where your ranked, not who is above or below you thus showing you where you are against everyone else, but doesn’t show everyone else your name to hound you to run them threw fractals.

Except it’ll all look like the following, because there’s a hard cap on level 50 now:
xxxxxx fotm lvl 50 ranked 1
xxxxxx fotm lvl 50 ranked 1
yourself form lvl 50 ranked 1^
xxxxxx form lvl 50 ranked 1
xxxxxx form lvl 50 ranked 1
xxxxxx form lvl 50 ranked 1v
What’s the point of that?
But its going to look like that either way, with or without the names of the players on the list…

OP framed it as a security issue. As for the leaderboards it can be expanded. Although if nobody cares about then why care about a number that is getting reset? I mean just ask ArenaNet to make Fractals more interesting and difficult without having to do like Fractal 79 or just having mobs with more hp and damage which I’m sure most will agree it isn’t interesting at all.

Except that isn’t the case. PvP leaderboards prove that. I mean they would be the ones who would get the most harassment since everyone wants to know specific builds for specific professions along with playing style in an environment where builds vary and matter. On top of that going from 30 to 50 isn’t an impossible task and at some point there will be a lot of people at 50s so even if what you say is true (which I disagree with) it wouldn’t matter since who would one target if there are hundreds and thousands of players at rank 50. Most people who get messages are already well known. They have youtube videos, guides on the forums, and/or streaming their game play. I doubt this is an issue and it is a mere fragment of imagination.
Don’t care about privacy, more concerned with elistist attitudes, but I too would like an Opt Out. I don’t enjoy this sort of competition.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
A leaderboard for just pve content sounds totally bad. Anet wanted to make GW2 pvp an esport(which failed) and now they want to do it to pve? No Thank You.
I wouldnt mind opting out of all of the leaderboards tbh at least from public view.
Prehaps we need some simple options on our account:
1) Opt out from public viewing your stats / leaderboard (excludes friends in common)
→ You appear as ‘annonymous’ or something if you have opted out?
2) Opt out from friends viewing your stats / leaderboard
- I dont mind my friends seeing (where we are common friends for example).
This allows us to retain some privacy and security to our status.

Coming back just to say, I really like your first and second option. Very good thought

If people want to “opt out”, fine. As for me, I’d rather achievement for lvls 30, 40 and 50…something I can show off. Who looks at the leaderboard online and remembers that person in game, I don’t really. I want to show my character off there and then!
You know they could be implementing these beyond just PRL. I haven’t read about the update entirely, but is it possible they could have something like “fractal achievement points” tied to accomplishing certain things in each fractal? Then people on the leader board would not be competing just for level, but for achievements as well? And maybe some achievements can be earned infinite times?
competition in PvE is imperative to facilitate growth of the game….most MMO’s thrive when their " end game " PvE content warrants competition with other guilds / servers and it spikes enthusiasm and drive. If you say GW2 isn’t that type of game thats fair enough but I argue….look at tequatl…the first time this game actually had some competition people were slammed with some decently difficult content for once and when the first group downed Teq that moment was all =O omg.
Sounds kind of reminiscent to WoW and raiding guilds getting server firsts n stuff doesnt it? Its a good thing trust me. There is no threat that this game will have the gear grind repercussions that WoW has because there is no gear treadmill once ascended armor gets implemented. The PvE content that is difficult would purely be gated by skill. That way competition would be even better!
Your username is already public. I see no reason why they shouldn’t put it on the board.

I don’t want a leaderboard.
Don’t like the leaderboard anymore than I do the new agony mechanics. It sounds like it was designed by a 10 yeard old.
‘And the you get ranking, and you can get INFINITE agony resistance! AWESWOME!’
Not.
