A lot of people seem unhappy about the fractal level of characters being cut to 30 in the next update with new challenges on fractals 31-50. Let’s consider the alternative. What if new fractals had been put in at level 51-70, say, and everyone’s level had been cut to 50?

- Massive AR needed for level 70 – big gear gating -> big grind -> really unpopular
- Ridiculous mob scaling – how hard would level 70 mobs need to be?
- Excessive repetition needed for new players to reach 70 – massive unpopular grind

That’s not going to work, so how about putting the new content in at 31-50 and leaving everyone’s level as it is? That could be done but it is more sensible to cut it back to 30 and give everyone an equal run at the new content. Existing 30+ players haven’t beaten the fractals with the new challenges. They might be a lot more difficult than the current levels or need different builds, we don’t know yet.

This is called rationalization. What you have said here can be applied to virtually anything in the game as an excuse to reverse progress.

  • You’ve never done Tequatl as a 65? Ok, then everyone’s char level is being reset to 65 for the new Tequatl.
  • You didn’t craft your stuff using the newer, stingier conversion recipes? Ok, then we are uncrafting your item and giving you the original materials back.
  • You didn’t start playing WvW until all the recent reward systems were put into place? Don’t worry, we’re resetting everyone else’s WXP to make sure you’re all equal.

The difference here is that high-level fractals affects a relatively tiny population because that pursuit has such a terrible risk/reward that almost nobody does it. Yet at the same time, for those who did do it, it represents a massive investment and self-defined achievement. I would argue that reaching 50+ in fractals is a more significant milestone than obtaining a legendary. That is what Anet is taking away from those players. Try something of this magnitude with something that affects the lowest common denominator and see if the forums don’t explode with rage.

Well considering the update is incresing the rewards, I am fine with this [I’m above level 30 by the way]. I mostly got to 30+ by just doing the daily fractal runners (1 level if it was a daily) and a few more for the monthly every time.

The rewards were trash and there was no reason to run those aside from “Wow look at my super awesome glowing backpiece I spent 500 ecto on!” It was pointless. It was also not harder than making a legendary. You can actually farm / grind for fractal level increases, you can not do the same for a legendary precursor.

I sort of agree with your last statement about the lowest common denominator. But look at it this way. They did it for a good reason. Rewards and everything are being scaled up. We may make it out better this way getting back to the levels we were (as far as gold, items, and other rewards go).

Look at things as a positive, because from what I am reading, that’s what this update is. Leaderboards are meaningless and pre-patch, any fractal level above 30 was too.

No one, at all that pushed higher than 50, did it for a reward. They really didn’t. If anyone thinks they did they should just re-evaluate their reasons for coming into this discussion.

They did it for the same reasons we pushed the fastest times on GW1 (if you have no idea what I mean please visit http://gwscr.com/forum/index.php)
We didn’t do it for reward. We spent ALL our in game gold on fail after fail after fail to get the best time possible.
It’s the same as GW2 for high level fractals. The reward was, hi, I’m level 51 FoTM (pre-piggy backing) or hi, I’m level 80 FoTM get on my level yo.

I mean really. No one at all did it for extra rewards lol. Way back when, the rewards of 50+ were actually worse than the rewards of 30-40 so…. gj on that I guess.

Anet is stripping it’s players prestige from them and sharing it around to everyone. Fair? Hardly.
