Guild Wars 2

Death and Taxes was originally a WoW guild formed in 2004 by a rather small group of players whose talent and dedication attracted the attention of many more. Our guild quickly rose to the top, achieving 14 World-Firsts and over 30 US-Firsts during Classic and Burning Crusade, while at the same time maintaining an extremely fun raid environment and multiple competitive PvP teams. Since then, our guild branched out to different games which includes an active interest in Guild Wars 2.

Overall, DNT has a fairly large and varied player-base. Most of us have a long history of being among the best at each game we’ve played, but without too much of an elitist attitude. We’ve brought this same mentality into Guild Wars 2. If there is one thing that you should know about the core of our guild, it’s that after years of experience being at the forefront of both raiding content and PvP across varying games, we know exactly what it takes to make a great team.

We are currently looking to expand our team with some more Oceanic players (although NA players are encouraged to apply as well still)

What we are looking for:

• A keen interest in PvE
  We enjoy all aspects of the game. We’re very efficient at farming dungeons and this is currently our strong point. We ask that our applicants have Dungeon Master and FotM level 40 and up. Although exceptions will be made for the right applicant.

• Team players
  We expect a higher level of situational awareness and preparation than most guilds and players are used to. We are looking for players that see the bigger picture and are happy to contribute in a team environment. With this comes a need for players to be able to learn from, admit and overcome mistakes.

• Ventrilo and Mumble
  We require our members to use voice chat during our runs in order to optimize group progress and effectiveness. Recognize when to speak and when not to. Communicate and make calls quickly and clearly.

Some things that you will need to consider prior to lodging an application..

• DNT is not a “side” guild. This means we require all of our members to represent at least 80% of the time. If you intend to represent any other guilds during your time with DNT, this will need to be pointed out in advance.

• Due to “Guild Missions” we will require members to move to Blackgate in order to run with us. You will not be required to do so immediately (although this is preferred), you may wait to transfer until you have been offered a “Veteran Member” position.

• We are very easy going in terms of when our members play and where. We do, however, ask our members to play a setup which benefits groups and progression most. We are not the type of guild you should apply to if you run a warrior shout heal build or a dps guardian build — know your class.

Don’t apply to this guild unless you are an eliteist. To get in you must have dungeon master as “they don’t have time to teach dungeon strategies”. Also a requirement is FoTM 40+. And no they won’t help you.

I’m glad my application was denied. Who wants to be a part of an unhelpful guild that sets the bar so high.

Since you don’t seem to have read the comment i wrote on your application after it was denied, i’ll post it below for you:

“Hello, Dark. I can’t say that we are being narrow-minded because we did offer you the option of applying once you could meet the requirements we have set, and the majority of the people we consider for trials already meet those requirements. If we simply took in everyone that applied with very little experience in fractals and dungeons, we would spend a lot of time teaching and wouldn’t make the most of the time that we are able to play (most of us wither work or have class to attend). We do, however, care about newer players as a lot of our members contribute to forums or assist strife in his dungeon tutorials, which are designed to help players with less experience. I suppose to put it simply, we are looking for people that can play on a level of what it takes to keep up with us. We don’t mind teaching to a degree, but we can’t focus purely on that. Hopefully you understand.”

I’m sorry that we seem like elitists to you, and to be fair, the requirements we look for are listed at the beginning of the application you submitted, so you knew what you were applying to from the start (providing you took the time to read the application).

I hope you understand that rejecting you is just as much for your benefit as ours. If you run with an experienced speedrunning group and can’t keep up the group is forced to either leave you behind or slow down to your level, neither of which is preferred. If faced with the former you would end up resenting us and not enjoying your time in the guild and if faced with the latter guild members would end up resenting you and avoid grouping with you altogether. Either way you are left with an awkward and uncomfortable guild dynamic and everyone stops having fun.

We receive many applications for our guild so to avoid having these awkward situations on a regular basis we set the bar fairly high. Dungeon Master and FotM 40+ are very doable and if you aren’t at least close to meeting these requirements then you would have a difficult time fitting in. I wish you the best of luck finding a group of players that can maximize your potential and I’m sorry we can’t be that guild for you.

Just to reiterate:

Death and Taxes has always shared the mindset that teaching newer players who may not meet our requirements, but show potential, is often a solid investment. However, we receive many good applications and don’t have unlimited time. Because of this, we’ve raised the bar a little further to what we deem as an acceptable means of measuring an applicant’s determination and desire to become a member of our guild.

In other words, what makes you so special? We are looking for players to play with, not carry.

The hateful responses I received from the group:

“I’m really low on fractals – level 2. But like I said I’m willing to work on that.”
—So you should have worked on that before you applied, perhaps?

“But how do people get there without support and experience? Everyone, including yourself were new once.”
—We put time into the game, pugged a lot, and taught ourselves.

“Just because you earn dungeon master doesn’t mean you can effectively run a dungeon.”
—Correct, but it would mean that the applicant took the time and effort to prepare to join a guild like ours.

“40+ fractals of the mist is very hard to come by. "
—This is why we make exceptions. But, no, it wasn’t that hard.

“Posting on a public forum isn’t contributing to the community. It’s just typed words of one person’s point of view. Someone else just as skilled or more skilled could easily pass over your comment as noise.”
—You’re kitten and jealous.

“I mean why would I find a helpful guild to help me with these accomplishments just to turn around and apply to your narrow minded elitist group.”
—You can pug your way to DM and 30-40 FotM. You can either a) teach yourself or b) learn through guides that have existed for months. This content is months behind. You are months behind us. We want applicants like yourself to put the time and effort into the game we require before applying; it weeds out lazy players.

—And you were responded to very fairly and politely, perhaps you should have judged our guild on what we said to you rather than our forum avatars?

Yes, we teach newer players who show potential. However, you didn’t show much potential because most of your application described excuses for laziness. Why would we sacrifice our time on you when we can invest it into a better player? What makes you so special?

I’m not sure why you’re getting so pus?? hurt. It’s pretty apparent that we require a certain skill level when the very first point says we require dungeon master and fotm 30+. We gave you a pretty normal response to re-apply when you get more experience.

Not every guild is a casual guild, yes we cater more to “elite” players and are focused on having a smaller core of quality players then a huge 100+ guild. Everyone in the guild values their time, meaning we want to run with equal level skilled players to be as efficient as possible. It’s the same as any other top tier guild in any MMO. We are concerned with running things as efficiently as possible, so that’s what we recruit for, it’s not for everyone which is fine, but of course you had to be a whiny bit?? for a 39 year old when someone tells you no.

And then you can show me what you’ve done for the community before talking ????.

That’s just a couple of replies. Please see my reddit post for the full list as it’s uncensored. So this is also a drama filled guild on top of being what they call “elite”. Be sure you know what your getting into before applying to this guild.

Must you really let this argument spill over to the official forums? I could screenshot your entire application, all of your responses, and post them here. Why haven’t I? because we are attempting to be civil, and you are attempting to be unpleasant and abrasive. I also noticed that you left out the replies written by myself, which I felt to be polite and fair. I hope you can see that you aren’t doing yourself any favors by trying to flame us in a thread about recruitment because you neglected to take our requirements into consideration.

You are lucky we do not spill out applicant details to forums.

I am intrigued by how immature you are.

We were very kind in our original replies and even gave you pointers on what to improve on.
Had you taken the time to actually read the recruitment post above, you would have realised you were not the type of player we are looking for (not even remotely close to).
What especially irritates me is the fact you replied to this post with facts that were already listed in the actual thread.

You felt it was appropriate to start insulting after getting rejected ( bumhurt ), which was entirely uncalled for. You made bald, uninformed statements. What did you think would happen when you posted that? Of course, this will set off a response, especially from all the people you didn’t know, but decided to insult… Who the hell do you think you are?

Now, I’ve gathered buying a new car and a leather jacket can help calm mid life crisis a little. Maybe give that a try?
