RP Story

For some, The Sisterhood is a name that inspires hope; for centuries the order has been a quiet presence, taking runaway women fleeing arranged marriages, sheltering abused women, and rescuing refugees and prisoners of war. For others, it’s a name that invokes terror; for those who live by the hatred and persecution of others, The Sisterhood looms on the edge of vision like death. Ready. Waiting.

Knights. Assassins. Clerics. All bound by tradition and arcane rituals, all working in the shadows to further the goals of their ancient order.

Why We Exist

You’ve all heard the old, tired jokes in chat. “There’s no women on the internet.” Or, “women don’t play mmo’s”…and we’ve gotten this one: “Sisterhood of transvestites, maybe…they can’t be women.” These crude, ignorant comments are precisely why we exist. Men seem increasingly frightened of the idea that women can enjoy an mmo, too, and that being a woman is somehow a handicap. If you’re an active gamer chick, chances are you’ve felt ignored, your talents and contributions overlooked…unless you’re being hit on.

The Sisterhood is a safe, friendly place for all women where you won’t have to fear misogyny. We’re also q-friendly (run by two lesbians!) so you can feel totally safe and at home, regardless of sexual orientation.

We have a guild bank and guild armorer, and we’re currently working on guild weapons. A vent or mumble channel is coming soon, so you know who you’re talking to. RP is always available (and encouraged!). We’ve created a safe place for women, a place where your talents can shine. And there’s a place saved just for you.

Personally I dissagree. We currently have over 10 girls in our clan gaming with us without a problem. Maybe it is because we are a very mature clan, but we never had major issues about perv jokes or whatever. Also pervs will be noticed very quickly and kicked/banned from the clan.

I don’t see why there should be a male or female only Guild, people should game together and have fun, that’s the most important thing in my opinions.

My own experience is that lots of people (girls specifically) don’t say anything when they are uncomfortable with perverted jokes/unruly flirting.. I don’t by any means think every guild has things like that going on but neither does anyone else. I think it’s more addressing the guilds that -do- have these issues present and unless there is a ridiculously vulgar situation, things may be overlooked. And there are plenty of girls who are the ones doing the inappropriate flirting with guys in a guild, so I don’t think people should view this as it applies to everyone. This looks like a great guild to avoid any possibility of being uncomfortable and meeting with very like-minded people.

As a female gamer for over 10 years (all of my teens and adult life!), I can personally attest to the fact that there are serious issues with gender respect across the board. Not all guilds are this way, but to have the option of a safe place to avoid the chance of it completely is a phenomenal idea and very much needed for plenty of women who simply don’t want to deal with it, whether you disagree or not. I’m fortunate enough to have great friends that I repeatedly game with, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still see/experience it from time to time.

The reason you probably have so many women in your guild is because it is a mature one that doesn’t objectify them, and that’s wonderful! But don’t believe it’s the norm, even in this wonderful Guild Wars 2 community. The part about my “talents and contributions being overlooked unless I’m being hit on” specifically resonated with me. It’s not just perversion, which is easy to deal with — it’s about a lack of respect of your capabilities as a gamer, guild member and even a person because you’re a chick.

Top DPS? Well, you probably got the gear that’s helping you because you’re a girl. Not because you earned it.

Officer in your guild? Pff, it must be because the guild leader likes you. Not because you earned it.

Great healer? Hah! Big fish in a small pool, cos girls heal because it’s easy.

These are super common examples, that I’m sure you’ve heard before elsewhere, in regards to someone at some time.

There’s a lot of opinions, articles, etc. on this but at the end of the day, all those do is prove that chicks being vilified or looked down upon is still a very real issue. Sad as that is, we’re not out of the sexist gamer woods yet.

This sounds like a fun guild idea I wish i would’ve noticed this thread earlier… i feel like i would be more at home in this guild than in my current one… sadly, i’m on another server and i don’t know if there is a way to transfer for free still or not.

@Ladykiller: Thank you so much for that. It’s true. All of it. It’s as if a different reproductive system makes you less. You put it so well, and it’s always such a reassurance to see that we’re not the only ones that have dealt with this matter. It’s so easy for people that actually have good guilds to assume that the way it is with them is the way it is everywhere. But sadly, you and I know differently, because we’ve been on the short end of that particular stick. Should you ever have need of another guild, we’d love to have you!

@Anron: None taken. The guild admins are, and it’s rife – at least in part – among our entire leadership. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to see more, but it’s by no means a requirement.

@LittleZoe: As of last night, server transfers were still free. If you’re interested, jump ship, come to Piken Square, and join! Even if you want to stay on your current server, you can still join our guild. Stop by our website, fill out an app if you feel like it, and message us in game! <3

As co-founder and fellow member, I give my full support to this guild. I’ve played on my fair share of MMO’s, including being a main tank in a top raiding guild on WoW. I can’t tell you how many times my gender got in the way of people respecting me. I’d be “that really cool tank we should invite”…until they heard me talk on Vent. Then I’d be talked down to, told how to play my class, and just generally disrespected. Not always. Not by everyone. But enough to sour my taste against the majority of guilds and male gamers.

If you’re a girl who’s felt the same way while playing, please feel free to say hi to us in game! Even if you’re not able to join or have already found a guild to call home, we’d still be happy just to chat :)

As for naysayers….all I can say is try being a woman first. You might get it then.

This is a great idea. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve wanted to started a female-only guild in a game, but I’ve worried about being either ridiculed by the community in general or rejected by other women. I’ve come from games where girls lavish the attention they get from men and exploit it to the max, so it’s always been hard to find women that feel the same as I do – where they don’t feel they are respected as a person and considered for their unique set of skills not based on their gender. I’ve always just wanted to be considered for what I had to offer to the guild as a player, not as a woman.

Having said that the majority of my online game friends have been male, probably as a result of the above; not finding like-minded women (it could also be to do with the fact that I actually grew up with lesbians). Most of the guilds I’ve been in, I’ll laugh and go along with a lot of the nonsense (having worked in the trade industry I’ve know how to cope with that) but often I’ve eventually become fed up with the sexist/perverted comments and withdrawn.

Sorry for the life story, I just really liked the idea. It makes me want to move server.

@Ravenyx: Your concerns are justified, I think. I had the same worry when I set out to make this guild…will women rally to my banner or ridicule me? And of course, there was plenty of ridicule to go around – until the forums came up, one of the precious few ways we had for publicity was on map chat. You can imagine exactly how that went. For a while, I wondered if any other women felt the same as we did at all.

You are a hero of mine! I agree to the fullest extent. I was looking for a safe place to enjoy gaming and get away from any and all perversion in EVERY aspect of it and The Sisterhood has given me just that.

I’m in the guild since a while now and i can recommend it to others too It’s a friendly place and i hope more people will join soon

10 years ago I got asked to join a ‘girls only’ Q3CTF clan, and at the time I thought it was a little silly. 15+ years of ‘THE INTERNET’ later, though, and I’m finally worn down to the point where I don’t want to have to suffer all the little microaggressions every day – it’s death by a thousand papercuts – and a Women’s Guild sounds like a wonderful thing.

And it’s not like the guys I play with are awful people – to the contrary infact, they’re very nice guys, they still just don’t realise how hurtful and harmful some comments can be. And there comes a point where you realise you’re just wasting your breath trying to explain how and why.

A minor example – in just 2 hours in WvW last night there were at least 4 separate people who joined Teamspeak and said hello by saying ‘Evening gents’ ‘Hello boys’ ‘Alright lads’ and so on. Simply having a guild that acknowledges one’s existence is a great start.

sounds like a good idea. I would join but iam already occupied with leading my own guild and am already in 3 other guilds and 1 WvW alliance guild.
The duhs do find it somewhat awkward to have a female leader X) but if they dont respect or like it there is a kick button just after right clicking their name

Thank you for your input minkee (and it’s a pleasure to have you in the guild as well! ;]) – it is true, the little things tend to get to you after a while.. and then usually the big things get you to the point of “I’m tired of the same old same old.. -done-”. That’s why we’re here for you!

@ Mirrei – I appreciate your support and bump! I have never run a guild before (always been a co-leader or “officer”) so I can’t imagine how it would be to have the power to kick an immature player out once your patience wears thin.. but it would feel pretty awesome, I assume xD
