22 Chests opened, nothing unique
I put down 10 bucks for this month to buy some keys. With the way things are looking, this is the last event I’ll pay money for until I have hard evidence the cost is worth it. I’m a bit saddened by the early news so far.
The concept of insanely hard to find items in lottory style boxes is not Anet’s doing. I’m guessing alot of those who are surprised have never played a F2P game before?
I’m just greatful that these things are not going to imbalance the game, they are simply nice looking. I’ll throw 20 or so dollars to give it a try, but I wont be shocked if all I get is mounds of regular stuff.
Learn from your mistakes. Don’t buy keys untill after you read the 500 posts about few low chances of drops. .. You are probably not getting your money back sry
I bought 100 lottery tickets and I didn’t win? I want my money back! – that’s your logic.
I just believe that the chance of getting items out of a gambling item should be officially released so people spend their gems fully aware of the chances.
Anyway, it’s not like you get NOTHING out of the boxes though.
You dont understand. Many people bought them thinking…oh hey…I am going to get a new skin that I really want.
Only to find that the drop rate is impossibly low. If thats the case and its just a way for them to make extra money….Anet wont get another cent from me.
I opened 47 and expected to get “something” related to this event. I got JACK kitten and to be honest I don’t think Anet deserves any of us at customers or fans at this point.
The first thing the patch notes talk about are new items. Which are being dangled in our face and then.. Made impossible to acquire.

That….you can be kitten sure I wont pay gold for it…this is ridiculous.

Nobody thought it’s a “chance to get”? All of them thinks open chest = instant new skin?
Seriously?

Key word there is chance…opening 80 chests and getting nothing is not a “chance”
If making profit is the reason behind this bad chance of getting such a skin, it will fail. They will upset and upset and upset heaps of players!
There would have been better options, for example:
a) 1 key for 10 Dollar, but you would always get a random skin
or
b) 1 key for 20 Dollar, but you would always get a skin and you are able to choose which one you want to have
They could fill their pockets, keep the players happy and whatever..
20 Chest burned and nothing even relating to the holiday …… i was under the impression that the chest were going to be “themed” for the event, in other words the typical BLC items were not going to be over flowing when opened
Yeah I bought 10 keys. Used them, got more keys. Somewhere between 16-18 chest. Yeah… I just got had. Wish I could get my money back.

Let’s say there is a 2.5% chance per chest to get a Halloween skin. In that case, there is still a 10% chance to get nothing after you opened 81 of them.
Occam Pi (Ele), Acaena Elongata (Warrior), Finja Salversdotir (Ranger),
Bytestream (Engineer), Vim Whitespace (Thief)
What people don’t understand is that we are not adverse to spending money. I was a GW1 player for over 6 years, every holiday, I’d would buy the costumes, (even though I knew I wouldn’t use them that much) because it was my way of supporting Arena-net. but this? this is a blatant money grab, they want you to gamble with real money (as the only other real way to get keys is to grind a legion of alts to level 10) for a chance at a skin.
this is inexcusable, it saddens me greatly that the A-net I have supported for so long would stoop to things like this. If they allowed it in the store, even if it cost 800+ gems I would be at least somewhat ok with it, but there is absolutely good good to this, and A-net will not get a single cent from me again.
They could have sold the skin directly and make money while making people happy.
Fact of the matter is.. The drop rate is to low. They pushed this on us in the patch notes and advertising as if we had a good chance of some fun stuff. The big part of this being “fun” the vast majority that opened chest tonight got nothing at all. They feel cheated and a little betrayed. Most of them will not be repeat key buyers. They have been burned and they will skip further events that orient rewards around chests.
And this is why selling RNG is nothing more than preying on gambling addiction. Yes ANet…
IT’S EVIL.
I thought you weren’t going to be evil? If you really want to not be evil (and get more paying customers in the process) then stop letting ncsoft teach you how to nyerk up a game so thoroughly you end up with 4 servers after only a couple of years.
who actually wants that? Do we really want to be playing those same game mechanics for
another 5 or 10 years? -Mike O’Brien
Anything that makes people angry during a holiday event is a failure of game design. These events should be a celebration of the game and its community. Please don’t turn these into money grabs.
I opened 115 and got nothing new out of them. I don’t mind the items being random, but with a drop rate that low I won’t be purchasing any more chests for future events. Keep in mind that even if you spend $100 you are likely to not get anything at all.
Also quite disappointed at the rates. I mean I understand it’s only a chance and that’s fine but to be this small of a chance is a bit disheartening. Opened 26 and got nothing.
You dont understand. Many people bought them thinking…oh hey…I am going to get a new skin that I really want.

Chance is per chest, not the total chests opened since the game has no way knowing how many chests you will open.
Say there is a 2% chance to get skins, that leaves 98% chance to get crap per chest. And we all know that 98% usually wins.
So there. It’s a gamble – deal with it.
The Age of Entitlement
Why don’t you try refunding your lottery tickets at the gas station after you scratch it off and see how well that goes.
What you “expect” or think you “deserve” to get out of the chests is irrelevant. At no point did Anet give any expectations as to the drop rate of the items in the chest, nor did they force you to open any chests.
You made a conscious decision to buy keys, based on whatever preconceived notions you had concerning the drop rate of items, which ultimately ended up being far removed from reality.
It’s your own fault for making assumptions and impulsively acting on it, especially if doing so was outside of what you could reasonably afford.

Don’t know about you guys, but I’m not worried about getting any weapon skins AND I am enjoying this new event content.

God forbid people playing a game, ie an activity for having “fun”, expect something fun instead of being exploited for a cynical cash grab.
opened 20 nothing. I think if I am paying for keys I want at least a decent shot at getting something. Sorry if people think that is entitled I like a lottery but only if there are odds. It seems here the odds are to stacked towards ANET and people getting nothing.

I really don’t see what the commotion is all about. It’s chance. It’s not like ANet said you will get new skin per 5 chests you opened.
Wow! Where did ANet go? What happened to you guys? You have to do better than this. You used to be the company that was different from all the money-grubbers. This can’t be the same ArenaNet that built the first Guild Wars.
Doing this is no different than buying dozens of yellows and putting them in the mystic forge for that precursor that has a 99.9% chance of not happening.
A gamble and a gold sink, indeed.
A guildie of mine did get the chain sword after opening 75, though.

Out of 100 chests…getting nothing is not a “chance”
I opened about 50 chests (spent 4000 gems on keys, there were additional keys in some of the chests). I got nothing out of it.
Please, I’m begging you! Don’t buy chests if you just want the skins! You’re better off buying gold and grabbing the skins from the Trading Post! That’s it if you don’t already have the gold for it.
I sympathise with the people who have sunk lots of gold and/or money into buying keys, because I know how that feels, but I can tell you right now that ANet is not going to give you your keys/money back. It is a GAMBLE, people. And the one rule about gambling is that in the end, the house/casino ALWAYS wins. The smart thing to do is NOT to gamble at all, but simply wait and buy the skin you want (if you want it). If you have some extra cash and feel like having a roll at the dice, then go for it. But do NOT sink your life’s savings into it. Down that path is how lives are ruined.
The people who cleaned up from this event are the players who offloaded their stacks of Black Lion Chests the moment they saw the price going up. Learn from them.

Define “chance”. Does it say you will instantly get the item?
Wait, nevermind.. There is no point arguing to someone disappointed. I cannot “un-disappoint” you for expecting too much.

This isnt a lottery. This is a game that has a community that the devs do their best to keep happy with content. Making something impossible to get during a fun event, make people unhappy. Stop using that as an example because it pointless.
You know ANet, I’d be ok with this if not for the fact that you’re also asking us to buy basically every single other event item and if the weapons were dropping at a reasonable rate. Some people are using in excess of $50 in keys and not seeing a single measly Halloween skin… how is this right?
The event is supposed to be fun, but really all it’s doing is draining my wallet and my patience. I don’t remember having to buy my holiday tonics and weapons in GW1…

Expressing my negative attitude towards current drop rate of holiday theme skins from chests. I was sincery let down by your approach Anet. You made lots of unhappy customers today.
That being said, I only wasted 900 gems on chests. Other 5000 gems, well, not entirely bad call.
EDIT
Also, to those who compare this to lottery. You play lotto because you’ve distant hope of winning – not because you’d expect it. Slotmachines, however, you play because you know you’ll win. Doesn’t realle mean that you break even, because you keep playing, but because you win every now and then. And nobody spends thousands of insert currency in lotto every week but small bets. Here lots of us spend lots because they want that certain number from RNG – huge difference. I’m fanboy too, but let’s be realistic and stop defending bad odds.
Outsource rng → profit.

these are people who have put a lot of time and effort into it and it is pretty slick
keep it civil and the threads will stay open aye
I bought gems with both in-game and real money, thinking that $20.00USD + 10g might get me a few Halloween items from the 38 chests I was able to open. Apparently not. How can a company operate on this low of return? Even casinos have better chances!

The event is a gamble. No one told us that we will all get the skins.
Let me define “Chance”
chance/CHans/
Noun: A possibility of something happening.
Adjective: Fortuitous; accidental.
Verb: Do something by accident or without design: “if they chanced to meet”.
Obviously, we use Noun on our discussion.
“A possibility of something happening” tantamount to “A possibility of something not happening.”
Anyways, I sympathize with the frustrated people. Don’t gamble what you can’t/don’t want to lose (ie: money).
Wow. So you guys are po’d and writing off this week long event because you went crazy and blew a ton of gems in the first few hours? There is still lots of content to be had, all for free. Don’t get butt-hurt. Maybe buying like 100 keys in the first day was a bad idea. :\
Troggdor.7324 you’re wrong. the chests have updated, people ARE getting new Items. the chance at getting them however is probably close to 1%-2% IF THAT. that’s why people are so disappointed with this.

Yeah that’s great. Now explain to me, why, a the designers of a halloween event decided to make us gamble on getting costumes and halloween based items?
The problem isn’t that we fail to understand what the word “chance” means. By the way, thanks for linking a dictionary entry for a word. Now look up “irrelevant” and “straw man fallacy”.
