If you had spent your 20,30,50 dollars or more on gold instead of keys you would have enough money to afford just about anything in the game.

Also, multiple new events, and new jumping puzzles, and more to come over 3 more ‘acts’ isn’t fun?

They added a lot in this patch. You just have to be smart with your money/gold.

Here is the real problem…

People who spent $50+ on keys and got nothing are not likely to spend that muckittens again. This is a trick that only works once. Even hardcore gamblers stop taking chances if they don’t feel they will ever win.

Also if you ever watch people buying scratch tickets, they usually keep buying scratch tickets on a regular basis. This is because scratch tickets usually have a ~1:5 chance of paying back $1. So if they drop $20 on tickets, they win back a few $$$ and go “Aww shucks, at least I got $4 back! I will keep trying”. If those same people kept spending $20 and winning nothing, they would stop wasting $20.

Yep. I went from being somebody totally happy to pay money, to somebody who will only grudgingly pay for an expansion. That isn’t good business.

Reading this at work knowing that I’ll be patching overnight. By tomorrow morning gem to gold ratio will probably have gone back to normalish so it wouldn’t be worth it to convert gems to gold to buy the skins I want. Really disappointed. I quit Nexon games because of this kind of ‘pay for a 1% chance’ to get something approach to their cash shop and this feels no different.

I had thought about buying gems to get keys for this event, and I’d have been happy to pay for it if the chance of getting skins was actually decent, but that’s not going to happen after reading all these posts. We don’t do Halloween here but I was under the impression it was supposed to be about lots of candy and lots of fun. This just seems like a whole lot of frustration and misery.

I’m sure the skins aren’t the only thing in the event but it was definitely a big one. Knowing that a lot of players might only want to play around with the skin for the Halloween period – I don’t predict to see everyone running around with scythes and chainsaws a few months from now when the event gets old or when there’s new stuff for Christmas – why make it so difficult to obtain?

Exactly. Hollidays are supposed to be fun and relaxing. In GW1 everyone was running around with Halloween stuff during Halloween. Christmas stuff during Christmas. It’s just because it’s a fun, festive thing to do.

I gladly paid for every costume in GW1 and had every Christmas weapon from Gw1 as well and it was a blast seeing tons of people dressed up and having fun. When this stuff happens, whoever has the most money wins. And that is complete bull___.

I was so excited for something different from other games and similar to GW1 and am sadly ashamed and disappointed. This whole experience ruined this Holliday event for me already. Tons of my buddies and guildies in vent having fun doing the event but I’m already too kitten off to even be logged into the game.

I’m sorry, but this really isn’t an acceptable response. So just because someone who spent $50 on keys didn’t get any halloween items, let alone the ones they wanted, they should be forced to pay the guy who got lucky and got the skin in 1 or 2 tries 40g+ on the Trading Post just to get the holiday tat that they want?

Particularly bad that no one was warned that it would be such a poor “chance” to begin with. “Chances” are I could also meet Bill Gates tomorrow and he’ll hand me a $1,000 bill. Probably about the same “chances” as me getting the staff skin that I want.

@Regina Maybe next time you can define “Rare” a little better. Because I doubt many people have have spent 50+ dollars expected absolutely nothing. Maybe tell us a 1/1000 chance, ect. But like I said I am never spending money for something like this again. This is the one and only instance where I have seen a blatant profiteering. I feel like a fool now for buying into this. The way Anet made it sound and look was a good chance you would get something. Out of my chest i obtained worse stuff then i have ever in any chest before this event.

Some of you can take the hit. Some of you have better luck. but when it obvious so many did not expect this outcome (IN A GAME MEANT FOR FUN) something is wrong.

This is the type of thing that can hurt more F2P gamers in the NA market. This specific issue maybe not. But its the type of thing we shy away from.

Bottom line: Sure we knew it was a chance. Based on their marketing, game design and previous history I figured it would be something like

“Well I opened up 10 chests and got 2 sword skins and the light shoulders – Any guildies want to trade so I can get my Engineer that shield and rifle?”

It ended up being:

Player 1: “I opened 300 chests with nothing.”

Player 2: “I opened 2 and got 2 skins which I’ll sell for a heap of money.”

Player 1: “Oh. Some players are just luckier I guess. logs off unhappy and dissatisfied with gaming experience

Thanks for your witty comment. That’s not what this is about.

Witty comment? He’s just making a reasonable statement.

Honestly, the thought of dumping that much money into this game just for skins is laughable to me. It is ridiculous, however, that the drop rates are so low that you got absolutely nothing in return. This just goes to show that this system for obtaining rare items isn’t working, and ANet should change it.

It would make the most sense for them to reward players who do invest money in these things with items of at least above average rarity, but also have items with very high rarity that are still attainable.

This way, there isn’t so much of a gamble of getting something or nothing, it’s more of a roll of how rare the items are that you are getting. That might be a bit much for a holiday event though.

Same with me. Played GW1 since day 1 and invested TONS of cash into the shop in that game. It was never a “chance” or anything. You paid for account-wide items that made the game that much more involved.

I also feel betrayed and I guess it’s my own fault for thinking that the design philosophies they had in GW1 would remain in tact. I’m ashamed to have defended this so much these last few months.

Thanks Regina, you are so cool! Maybe you can approximate the number value of this “chance”? You know, 1% is a “chance” and 0.01% is a “chance” too. But they are a bit different. I think the point is that people trusted Anet to create a reasonable “official” pathway to get fun items for an event.

They were misled.

So what you’re saying is technically correct, but somebody is still having to unlock all those chests my friend. And those poor saps just enabled the “discerning common sense folks” to invest on the trading post instead and get items.

Essentially, Anet just directly punished people who used their shop and bought keys looking for holiday items. They inadvertently reward people like you that did not, and were more pragmatic.

Bad move as a company.

I guess all boils down to personal expectation and assumption… I haven’t got any chests/keys because I assumed it would take me a couple of hundreds of chests opened to get one or two items, so I simply passed. Looks like I was right. I based my assumption on the fact that they are unique vanity skins which are supposed to be extremely rare. Like, if you see two people carrying them in one week, it wouldn’t be good…

Now, I must disclaim that this certainly isn’t a “lol I knew it” kind of post, I am just providing another aspect to the whole thing. When I opened this topic, I was actually surprised as I already took for granted that event would be like it turned out to be, and didn’t think anybody assumed differently. It goes to show that individual perception indeed differs very much, even if it’s based on the same info. I even thought the drop rate would be lower, like “I heard there’s two guys with same halloween skin on Gandara” or something. I really don’t know why, the whole event just sounded like that to me, with all the “chance to win” marketing. I perceived it that way. And yet, there are several people already in this very six page long topic that say they got the skins… For what I have expected, that’s extremely good drop rate…

That said, I was really surprised that there are players that thought differently and it appears it’s a majority of players. While I don’t understand that point of view, I certainly accept it as fact – it’s a fact that majority of players expected something else (if these forums reflect the percentile opinion of game-wide population). Therefore, we must conclude there was a fail in communication and we must blame it on the company, for the simple reason of the percentage of players disappointed.

But, my point is, that the fail probably wasn’t done on purpose, as there are people in this topic (and not THAT less in percentage) who expected the event to be like this. So, I think both Anet and the players have something to learn from this. I think it would be wise if the devs would comment on this matter in either way – “we never said the chance was favorable” or “we apologize for the faulty info/event” – both are providing valid info which would serve both parties well in the future.

You are not guaranteed to receive a rare item after opening a Black Lion Chest. You have a chance to get a unique/rare item. Some people are luckier than others. The Halloween skins are tradeable, so if you aren’t able to get them in a Black Lion Chest, you can obtain them on the Trading Post.

I appreciate your feedback.

So i wonder, if ArenaNet’s philosophy on this Halloween event is to allow some players profit from the other’s gold, or in some cases RL money.

What about those who can’t be online at the perfect time for the event, and have to patch hours later, when the market is already inflated.
Why can’t the dev just sell the costumes, or weapon skins for gems, instead of putting them inside the gamble chest, i’d perfectly happy to pay for that.

Let’s just call the BLC the Gamble Chest from now on, and the mystic forge the Mystic Roulette.

It seems player must be lucky to have fun lately. Or grind a bloody amount of gold in Orr, and no other way.
I’ve just spent 50$ on another game where i can have a permanent in game feature, and i will be happy to spend some money if it’s not such a bad gamble.

Who needs to grind a bunch of gold in Orr? The bots do that for you, maybe we’re looking at this wrong and ANet wants people to buy gold so they can get limited festival items!

If you had spent your 20,30,50 dollars or more on gold instead of keys you would have enough money to afford just about anything in the game.

This is so completely and utterly false. Do you have any idea at all how much gold you get from 20,30,50 dollars? Do you have any idea what the most expensive things in game cost? Have a look before replying.

At the current exchange rate over the last 30 minutes, you will get 16,24, or 40 gold. Most expensive item is chainsaw greatsword at 33 gold and dropping.

And this isn’t as high as the peak exchange rate.

Completely and utterly false, right bra * roll eyes *.

No idea what that last sentence means… I can only assume it is yet another generic 9gag reference or daft internet casualty slang.

But as for the rest of it, you said that amount of money will buy you anything in game. Not sure where you’re looking but my non-rolling eyes are seeing items over 300g. I’ll go ahead and assume you worded your post poorly and meant to say any Halloween item, in which case you’d still be wrong, as the Chainsaw skin is now 79g, and rising.

inb4 memes.

“meta” this, “meta” that. Please stop saying the word “meta”.

I’m really glad I didn’t buy any keys if this is the type of response the moderation has to offer to what is obviously a problem of the odds being way too low. I’ve bought the cash shop skins and I don’t regret it, but that’s because I actually got what I paid for. I had assumed the chance would’ve been better, too, and I considered getting keys. I can fully understand the people who are saying their experience has been ruined by dumping money on, essentially, nothing – mine would’ve been, too.

You should really consider being more forward with the actual odds of getting something. That way, people know what they’re getting into ahead of time. “A chance” is too vague – 90% is a chance and so is 0.01%.
