Clock Tower Appreciation Thread :D
i found this is too easy
out of 10 run i only fall 3-4 time
got over 14,000 corn jump from this puzz
i just don’t get how some people are so bad at it
the first time sure i fail a lot to spend like 30 min failing
then i stop and watch how other people do it and lean from them
It drove me nuts and took me several hours, but I finished it and felt like king of the freakin’ world.
Love it.
Priorities, what to do?
Spend hours with dye
I SPENT 6 HOURS STRAIGHT AND STILL DIDNT DO IT… Do you guys realise Norns and Charrs make you fail coz you can’t see your character and then when you actually get ahead of them… it comes to luck because there is 1 block that drops into the acid a second after the first person jumped on it so you have to be pretty much in sync with the lead and that rarely happens..
Same here. Love it!! took me around 5 hours to get it the first time, so much fun.
did it with the smallest asura possible.
As other people have stated before, if you’re having trouble making some of the jumps, it’s best to look at other people’s videos.
If fact, you can start with mine

Shameless plug aside, it really does help. Second (or first?) most important thing is to take a break when you start getting worse and worse, or you’re raging so hard that you’re risking your equipment
Good luck, I know you can do it!
P.S. you don’t need to have a passive speed boost like I do in the video. But it does help that you can leave the others behind so they don’t block view of your character. Other than that, you should have no problem keeping up with the green goo.
I would like a chance to see the tower burn when the 31st comes around.
I just wanted to post my support for the tower. Thank you so much.
I havent even been close to complete it, been at it for hours! For me, its too hard. Its way to hard and it makes me so angry! But thats why it is so good. Because it is so hard, alot of people wont be able to do it. That makes it special, and it makes the people that have done it, feel special. I like that in a game. So great job Anet!

The jumps, are EASY. The only trouble is SEEING YOUR CHARACTER. And times you deliberatly slow down to see your character, you realise a mob of norns are covering your view of the jumps but that doesn’t matter coz the goo already got you coz you slowed down.
I play a short female human and she… isn’t noticable in a mob of norn and charr haha Meh, I will keep trying until I get lucky and there are no big players doing it. I almost did it a few times when for a few minutes when everyone was human/asura. But then norn showed up and I started doing a lot worse.

Everything in the puzzle is synced to the master timer. Player actions have no influence over anything.

I see. well it is settled anyway. I am just going to make a norn this evening and do it. simple as that.

I’m sorry my post didn’t help you
I have done the tower on all races, including an Asura mesmer. I had no speed boost on that character. So I can fully understand your situation. All through the first 10 jumps I was completely hidden by all these Charr and Norn chars. (But then they start to die off and it gets easier).
You really have to get a feel for when to jump. That’s where muscle memory kicks in. But with muscle memory (any kind of memory really) you have to understand that you can’t train for too long at a time. I wouldn’t advise playing the clock tower for more than 1-2 hours at a time (unless you’ve already mastered it).
Go out, do some Halloween achievements, or if you’ve already completed all of them, then do something else you like to do. It’s important that you also calm down. I know I was ready to destroy my keyboard with the help of my mouse after the first 2 hours of failing at the tower.
But then I slept on it, and the next day immediately at my first try I’ve made it further then ever before, and within 15 minutes I’ve successfully completed it. After that I could already do it at least 1 out of 3 times.
I know my cousin was in the same boat. Couldn’t get past the first cog on the first day of trying, easily completed it the next day.
I know this is not much help, but it’s all I can give really… Please, trust me. You need to give it a rest if you’ve really been doing it for 6 hours. I can only imagine the psychological pain you’re feeling right now
I enjoyed the clock towers difficulty but the whole not being able to see your character and place your jumps is kinda BS
OhBoyKIttens
I have enjoyed the puzzle very much, thank you!
No need to put other players into it though.

Yes, the norn do die off. Mainly coz they actually finish the puzzle. But this being an MMO there are plenty more norn coming to fill in. I an usually an optimistic person but after 4 hours of the same repeated fails I can honestly say that was the first time I got close to raging. And yes, I felt like forcing the keyboard through my LCD screen but we both know no good comes from that.
And yes, i have every other possible achievement up to this point. obviously i don’t have ‘attend the party’ yet. -sigh- And i am a completionist. so not having this achievement yet bugs me so badly. I hope I get it tonight
This is the appeciation thread Adam, the rant thread is that way →
I love this puzzle and I’ve not done any real puzzles either, the only puzzles I’ve done so far are Demon Grub and Shaman Rookery while I was leveling up. Still I managed to finish the Clock Tower in about 2 hours, every time I failed I knew exactly why (got complacent, did a stupid turn, tried something smart-that-really-wasn’t).
I finished it as a short human female in a group that has 2 norns and charr, but no one complained, everyone has tried the tower so many times together we knew each other and was cheering everyone on.
Easily the best part of the entire event. It was extremely creative. I hope they put more things like this in the game and ignore the whiners.
That’s where muscle memory kicks in.
That only really applies if you always follow exactly the same path, which is only possible if you have an extremely stable connection and always land exactly on the same places.
Sometimes I land on a cog and get stuck, sometimes I can walk normally, sometimes my camera decides to dive and show me a piece of ground that it found interesting. The difference between the behaviours depends on landing a couple of pixels more to the left or to the right.
And yet I manage to finish it 9 times out of 10 if I don’t have other characters blocking my view, because I can recalibrate or use a “backup” route.
I can do it blind (or almost blind) – I’ve had the “Travel out of overflow?” message pop up in the middle of my screen half way through the puzzle several times and I still managed to finish some of those, without stopping to close it – and it’s probably even possible to do it blindfolded (if you can hear the music), but I don’t think anyone can do it blind consistently, because of those little fluctuations that require you to suddenly pick a backup route or, at the very least, recalibrate your heading.
So while memory certainly plays a role (auditory memory too – since the puzzle is synced to the music), the ability to dynamically adjust your actions is what allows you to make up for latency fluctuations, camera turning speed fluctuations, frame rate fluctuations, finger slippage, etc..
So I wouldn’t really use the term “muscle memory” here. At least that’s not how I do the Clock Tower.
There’s certainly some memory involved (remembering the puzzle layout, knowing which parts to avoid because they make the camera bounce, etc.), but for me it’s always a pretty “dynamic” thing, in the sense that I have three or four alternatives for most jumps, and will pick one based on factors such as visibility, whether or not my character “feels stuck” when landing from the previous jump, whether or not I think I have time to spare, etc..
But maybe that’s just me.

I personally found the reactions of the other players to be as hilarious as the puzzle itself. When everyone was emote crying or just raging whilst waiting for the next attempt, it gave me the strength to carry on. Took about 30 – 40 minutes, with the biggest Charr I could muster (and all the acrimony of my then comrades ;p)

Played for a solid 2.5 hours trying to beat this before I finally made it. Jumping puzzles aren’t normally my thing but I have to say I absolutely loved this challenge. Great design. Great fun. And the challenge of it was highly addicting and made it feel that much more satisfying when I finally got it.
Don’t think it was too hard. Love it. Can’t wait to see what AN does next.
It was great! Frustration followed by triumph is a terrific feeling!
I noticed 80% of the people would fall off a few seconds after the first gear and 90% were gone a few jumps after that. As an asura, all I had to do was ghostwalk the first few jumps and then I could eventually see myself once everyone was weeded out.
I enjoyed the puzzle in general, though there were some very frustrating aspects that were not associated with the puzzle itself. I look forward to more things like this but hopefully a little finer tuned.
Even though this tower had me spending hours to finish it, it was an awesome puzzle.
It was very well put together and quite challenging.(evil puzzle is evil :P)
Thanks for taking the time to make this Anet it was very fun!
Dragonbrand
I really hope Anet adds more events like the Clock Tower. I wouldn’t mind if they made even more difficult ones.
Well it took me a few hours to get it done but I did it. It certainly was frustrating, got to go fast and not make any mistakes.
The main things I didnt like was other players rubberbanding around me making it hard to concentrate but once you get past the start most of them are gone, and the other thing is the waiting… and waiting… to start over.
Its a very nicely themed challenge, I can’t wait to try the christmas jump challenge!
I hope they make a Super Mario Level themed Jump Challenge, that would be amazing.
Also im sick of them being called a jump puzzle, theres nothing puzzling about them, they are Jump Challenges!
It was frustrating but after 2 hours of mistakes I finally made it. I love a challenge and it was a challenge indeed. I think ArenaNet made it just right, but the only thing I don’t enjoy is the time pressure. XD

simply.. not… true…
took me 3 nights in a row but now finally made it…
(and once you did.. it gets easier!)
like said before.. even when I couldnt make it I loved this.. it is awesome!
Worst frustration ever. Hate it with passion. I fail to see what is to apriciate there? And no, I am not going to spend 2 hours jumping like a headless chicken on some broken stairs surrounded by some big fat norns and charrs, I even cant see my character in the crowd. A weird understanding of fun. (My opinion)

I can attest to this. First toon took 4 hours. Second took 1 hour. Third 3 tries.
I can say this much the less people the easier it is.

I’d love to see this back again, and more jumping puzzles like it. It’s the perfect difficulty and is actually fun to do over and over again. It would be disappointing if it were made any easier… and after completing it dozens of times now, I tend to make it 50% of the time.
Those that can’t do it should just accept that and move on… I’m quite terrible at games like Diablo and LoL… but I don’t write posts about how it’s too difficult, I just stop playing and do something different. On the other thread someone wrote “I spent six hours trying so I deserve something for my efforts,” and honestly… I don’t know how to properly respond to that, just /facepalm

best jumping puzzle !
made it multiple times just for the fun!
I had a lot of fun doing the puzzle, even while I was failing it, haha. I read that some people were getting really frustrated, though, so I put together a tutorial to help.
It took me about an hour and a half to complete it.

I have loved this jumping puzzle! The more difficult the better! Love the ‘We do not carry players’ attitude.
I hated it. I got really frustrated with it. Then my guild was running a group for it and I joined and I stopped taking it so seriously. I spent hours in there trying to achieve the end. When I did I was really excited, it rocked, and I found myself staying.
A day later I spent even longer in there trying to help my guildie though. I did it this time as a char which pissed some people off, but all in all that puzzle was good. As someone in TS3 said, Nintendo hard. Just the right difficulty.

It really helps if you don’t take the Clocktower that serious. I must have fallen down countless times, and it only got funnier when a guildy joined as Charr on purpose just to mess with me. And of course there was the time when I did the whole Clocktower while riding a broomstick, which had a guildy in stitches. He was unable to complete it due to laughing too hard.
Whenever you fail, have a good laugh about it, and prepare for the next try. I thought this was addictively fun.

Whoa whoa whoa! Are you telling me you can ride the broom stick inside the puzzle instance? I’m totally doing this when I get home
Is there some trick to it though? Or do you just get on your broom stick before you’re teleported inside?
I got on my broomstick before the cutscene starts, and then I appeared on the broomstick in the challenge. Definately made jumping a lot harder. I’m not sure if its still possible after the last update though.
I made it through the whole thing on the broomstick up to the point where you have to fall down. The falling damage instantly takes away the costume, and you can’t reactivate it inside the challenge itself.

I liked it. It was one of best things i seen in GW2 so far. Frustrating , ye sure, but its MAD King tower, so what to expect.
Secret is to get ahead of the pack at the beginning. No reason to get lost inside a Norn or Charr. As soon as you see the explosion, mash your jump button. You can land on the platform as it is forming. 95% of people will wait, so it should be you and maybe one other person leading the pack.
I’ve done it on all 5 characters ranging from Charr to Asura. If you get ahead of the pack from the beginning you don’t even have to worry about not seeing anything.
That’s about it.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
wasnt easy at first (for me) but was fun thanks!
Clock tower was amazing, I really hope there are more of the same in the future.
Altaholic, can never have just one!
I loved it.
I haven’t really played this game very much since I bought it, but I logged in the other day on a whim and was happy to see there was a Halloween event….And I was seriously stoked when I stumbled across the Clock Tower puzzle. It actually kind of re-kindled my interest in this game.
It’s probably one of the very best things I’ve ever seen in an MMORPG. I really hope there will be more stuff like this in the future.
Absolutely love it!
I did it after 40 minutes of cussing to myself haha. Great fun, challenging and not impossible.
Although I play human, not charr or norn, that would’ve been frustrating.
I love this, it would be awesome, if we had a daily quest with like 20 silver reward on it, i would totally do it every day for the next 5 years. xd
Spent hours on it, but no luck yet. I think I may try again tonight, though it’s beginning to feel like wasted time.
It’s really funny though, and goes to show how great the tower is: I can’t be angry at it while trying to do it; it’s only when I’m away from my computer that I get frustrated with not having completed it. I think it’s just too visually amazing and too fun. I can’t hate it while looking at it! xP
And in all honesty, I don’t think the difficulty for me comes from Norn or Charr, or anything like that. I just over-think everything. It’s the same for me when I drive in an unfamiliar area of high-traffic. My brain locks up until I’m able to just stop and think things through. An ocean of green acid doesn’t allow for that, lol.
loved the clock tower – completed it on all my alts including asura without any speed buffs
It was a very fun puzzle that took me several attempts to finally master it. I hope they add more jump puzzles like this in the future!
