After seeing what ANET did with this event, I really think it was a beautifully designed and executed piece of work. Pulling all the different systems of Guild Wars together for a really entertaining, layered experience. Coupled with the typically jaw dropping art design, of course.

The hiccup for me was with buying keys for the Black Lion Chests. It taught me one important lesson: Don’t. Ignore them. They don’t offer enough reward for the cost, pure and simple regardless of any event.

I don’t know how this RNG delivery system will figure into future work, but it really feels at odds with a lot of the feeling of Guild Wars 2 and the mission statement. The legendary precursors, mystic forge, etc.

I think people want adventure and the satisfaction of achieving a goal – not a dice roll.

Black Lion Chests are fine as they are. Putting anything in them that is “Oh my [diety] amazing!” would result in the system turning into “you must buy this, or miss out on cool stuff that you won’t see otherwise.”

Wasn’t my point. Like them or not, they are a content delivery system which relies on the RNG.

I don’t think the RNG is good for a game like guild wars.

You must not have bought any keys. For those of us who did, thinking we’d get some cool Halloween stuff and getting absolutely nothing new or seasonal out of them, it was a waste of money. If I had wanted that stuff, I would have bought the keys earlier. No one is saying there should be unique Black Lion Chest only content, we just would have liked more the big “nothing” that we got.

I agree with the OP, the random chance to get an item from the Black Lion Chests never should have been implemented. It just wasn’t worth it to the player base. I wish I had spent those gems on the minis or a costume instead. Oh well, lesson learned.

I have bought keys and have used them. In the context of Halloween things, I suppose I should agree on the premise that “here’s some shiny thing with a low open rate” is a pretty bad way to go.

Am I backtracking? Yes, but that’s because I thought about it further. Outside of the event, they were fine though. You got a toy, a booster, and a useful tool. That’s all that was really ever needed in there without giving the TF2 crate feeling.

I honestly agree with this post.

Anet had only 2 flaws this entire event:
1) They did not test the first 2 patches well , both act 1 and 2 came out totally exploitable.

2) The RNG on the chests for skins. To have the Endless stuff in the chests is completely fine , but to add normal skins was a major let down , one that makes me not spend money on the cash shop.

So Anet , overall great event , but you need to rework some parts. The event is amazing , but sure could get better.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t make those mistakes again. This is the first big even for GW2 and Anet are generally pretty good at learning from their mistakes.

I bought 5 keys which got me nothing, but then used them to make 4 MadKing chests, and found 1 rare item which sold for 16g, with which I bought 1,500 gems and upgraded my account with new character slot and bank slot.

My GF bought 1 key and got a rare item that sold for 25g. She bought pets and dye with it….

One of my guildies bought £20 worth of keys and got nothing.

So, it really was an odd lottery. I feel everyone should have got something fun at least, like a themed cracker that guarentees a nice halloween themed prize, but has the chance for also a very rare prize. At least people would know what they were getting then.
