I have to say, it was a really cheap, and effective, ploy to get people to drop money for this event.

While I get that, skins that you can only get for… a week out of the entire year just isn’t okay when it’s a 2% drop rate from something that (will usually, unless you’re filthy rich in game) will cost cash.

What I do know is that I won’t be buying gems again for any other sort of event, this was really a crappy thing to do. You could’ve at least improved the drop rate in the mystic forge chests, but it seems to be just as bad as the BLC. So there’s still no saving grace. I think that a 25% chance to get a skin would’ve been much fairer, considering you can buy a bulk of 5 keys and there are still 10ish or so skins you could nab.

Anyways, perhaps the farm-able chest can drop the skins. But I have terribad luck at getting anything from it.

I’ve come to peace with the idea, they are just skins. And if I really, really want it bad enough, I could be saving up the stuff to craft it. What is waiting 3 months and earning something I want that bad? Sure, I considered just buying gold on the net, I really did. But I then decided I would never stoop that low and risk my account too. So many people want the immediate, and yeah, it sucks that some people get all the luck, but such is life. Even if that life is a game.

I’ll get that greatsaw yet. Even if I have to do it the hard way.

RNG ruling this game together with bots. Placing effort into doing for example this event alone, as reward gives u 2 blue items, wile on the other side lvl 5 ppl who just started , are getting loot.
Placing any effort in GW2 is dumb. Random (if any) login is kinda ok , but placing effort is so wrong thing to do.

I get that people get kittened off because they used real money in the hope to get some skins drop from a chest.

I think that Arenanet should have had skins for sale via the shop and not via a lottery that costs real money. At least not without the proper advertisement and information before purchase.

It could have been better if in addition to buy keys you could have used the mystery potions to buy the skin (or another series of templates) you desired from a vendor. That way you had the certainty of a purchase and guaranteed you had something after spending all that money!

The drop rate is perfect. Rare items should be rare. I know there is no way I will get one but when I see someone run by with one of the rare skins I want to think “Oh cool!” instead of “That old thing again?”.

I agree that rare items should be rare.
But it was a little unethical on Arenanet’s part to promote people to spend money on keys for the first 2 acts to get skins, and then coming out with a different way to obtain the skins that is essentially free.

It’s like charging a guy to cross a bridge when there is a free boat that comes by.

This could have been done two different ways to reduce anger in players:
1. Have some sort of way to work up to get what you want. (Such as tokens which seem to work pretty well)
2. Give players information so they can plan accordingly. Would the people that bought a bunch of keys spent all that money if they would have known that there would be an easier way in the future?

But then again, it seems like games are heading in the direction of money.

Whenever someone complains about the insane amount of keys and/ or money they had to spend to get one of these “rare” skins there is the the inevitable responses of “why would you expect to get something so rare for cheap” or " Well you’re just stupid for spending that much money, I would never buy the keys like you did" The problem with either response is that both are potential issues for ArenaNet.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my ups and downs with this holiday event and in the end even though I haven’t received any of the skins I have really enjoyed the event but I too haven’t spent any money. The problem is that I do want to support AreaNet and buy stuff but I don’t want to gamble for something I would only be wearing for the event. So I feal like Halloween specific items should have been easier to purchase/get as more people would have been willing to buy them and exotic weapons and armor not specific to Halloween could have been kept rare.

In the end “I’ll never buy chests again” or “you’re just stupid, you wouldn’t catch me buying keys” are both bad for AreaNet as they show that something needs to be tweaked if AreaNet wants our money.

For me it has to do more with the fact that they already have the crazy rare skins…. they are called LEGENDARIES. With those at least in the end you have something to show for it. Halloween is supposed to be a fun side event, which only lasts for a week a year, and after spending a week farming for the skins/items, and dropping money on Black Lion Keys (because as it was pointed out, this game is free and I made a conscious decision to support the developers), I have NOTHING to show for it except six stacks of candy corn and a bunch of all but useless tonics.

All of the special skins/weapons in my opinion should have been given out in a way similar to the Mad Kings Clock Tower. It was extremely fun, wonderfully hard, and after a few hours of working at it, you get a guaranteed special reward. Nothing handed to you, you still have to work for it, but at least you have something to show for it in the end.

If you did what they did, you would have what they have.

…and i don’t care. If I want it, I can buy it. Hell, if I want to make some serious dough, I could get the recipe.

It’s not like the skins are the only content that was released…

You can’t get a recepie for the scythe skin, or for the greatsaw/chainsaw skins. So you can’t really grind for that option than dumb luck (possibly) with killing the Mad King ad nauseum.

I agree rare should be rare.

But rare should not mean having to spend 50$ to possibly get a decent chance of it dropping out of a BLC.

The other skinned things that you can make permanent that have 4hrs with I have no problem—there’s a way to grind and get it. But the Scythe/Greatsaw/etc are awful and that’s what I’m addressing, and that’s the part that I think was a super shady business practice.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the event, and I freely support arenanet and will continue to spend money on this game. But never again for BS crappy RNG for holiday event skins.

It’s not like the skins are the only content that was released…

And I thoroughly enjoyed the other content and am not complaining about it. But, instead of saying “oh well” to the things I didn’t like, I would rather try to provide Arenanet with feedback so my overall experience in the future is better, and in return Arenanet gets more of my money. Win-win.

After spending thousands of euros in casino I asked where is my jackpot, wtf is with low win chance?
…they threw me out!

This is why I don’t go to casinos, I don’t support the casino mentality. I want to however support Arenanet, I want to feel like it’s worth my money to buy Black Lion Keys. But if the casino mentality is the course that Arenanet is going to take with event souvenirs then they can count me out when it comes to spending real money on events in the future.

If you did what they did, you would have what they have.

Guild Wars 2 allowed me an opportunity I have not yet experienced, the chance to be with the curve by playing the game early enough that I was not always playing catch up. When ANet announced the Halloween event I was excited, a chance to get all the holiday goods and not be left out. ANet thought differently.

This minimal grinding, no monthly cost game has turned in to either the most grind intensive or the most expensive game I have ever played. I have played as much as I possibly can(read way too much) over this halloween event, and I have not received a single halloween item save for the crafting ingredients. No weapon skins, no temporary weapons, no armor. The only thing I did receive was the slippers for completing the clock tower. Bravo ANet, you did a perfect job with the foot in the door technique.

Having the slippers, I wanted more, and quickly hopped in to the labyrinth. I completed both chests, and I only received green items. ANet had already changed it so I could not run it again until the game reset, waiting twenty four hours between runs is extreme. This is a limited time holiday event after all. It was then I decided to purchase gems with real money to buy three sets of keys. I was able to open sixteen chests and received nothing for my real money. I then made as many mad king chests, eight I believe, and was greeted with the same fact.

Yesterday the Mad King himself made an appearance, surely he would drop something. After running that approximately twenty five times, receiving largely nothing but two rares, I am close to giving up. As I said, this is either going to be the worst grind I have ever played, or I will have to drop far too much money to buy the keys which never seem to drop anymore, or the items themselves from the TP.

I have demonstrated I am willing to put down the time. I have jumped at the chance to do any event that could lead to a chest and do them as often as allowed. I did not know that this would be ultra elite items, I thought that is what legendaries were for. I thought I would be rewarded for running halloween events with halloween items. ANet thinks differently.

Thanks for the support. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who feels that way about the BLC-only skins (Scythe/greatsaw/chainsword/etc).

I think there is a happy medium somewhere and I hope by the next holiday update it’ll be better than this stuff. I’m really disappointed.

There’s a principle involved.

That there is. This game is entirely focused around cosmetics, as opposed to the “gear grind” of other MMOs. Weapon and armor skins are the endgame, and promoting online gambling with real money is not only morally sketchy, I’m pretty sure it’s borderline illegal. To say that skins “don’t matter” in this game is to not understand what GW2 is about in the end. I also can’t wait for people to reply trying to say the endgame is “fun” or some unidentifiable bs thing like that.

I had planned to buy keys for these skins but when I found there was a 2% drop rate, I decided not to get scammed. At this rate you need 50 keys per skin! To even get a chance at getting a good skin, you need to drop ~$100. These items are for the rich players, the 1% the rest of us who don’t have this sorta disposable income will not/cannot be support this buisness practice.
At a 20% rate I would have bought keys, Anet could have made $30 from me, and probobly a lot of other players.

So what about people like me who dont use greatswords, staffs or shields? Do I get my own thread because I dislike the dagger skin? Am I entitled to a better skin because all the other ones look cool?

No, and I wouldnt expect it either.
Just buy them off the TP if you dont want to deal wth RNG, its that simple.
Also, I see a lot of people blaming RNG, has anyone seen how cheap the skins people dont want are? Im assuming the weapons dropped at the same ratio so your RNG argument is false, enough are dropping, but everyone wants them so they rise in price.

I agree. If the drop rate increases for the next wave of these sorts of skins to about 20%, I’d condone buying keys with cash. OR if there was a way to do x, y, z to ensure you got the skin that you wanted, even if it’s gems—>specific skin.

I think increasing the holiday skins to something like 20% would be enough, though. You have a decent chance of getting a skin and you can buy/sell on the auction house where it wont cost 20-50+ gold each. I’m not a hardcore player or grinder, there’s no way I can drop that sort of coin by playing the game as intended (IE: not grinding away every day) for a skin when my character is nowhere near fully decked out with the rune/sigil sets I want.

So, yes. Feeling a bit scammed/cheated over this whole thing and I hope they make some changes.

So what about people like me who dont use greatswords, staffs or shields? Do I get my own thread because I dislike the dagger skin? At least you get to work towards something

I don’t currently use a staff or a greatsword. I’m currently gearing out my thief. But then I’ll be moving along to warrior and elementalist or necro. Things I’ll actually use the skin on. You have 5 character slots, this is a ridiculous argument. There will be other skins, and ones that you like. I want to make sure that this isn’t a repeat in the future.

OH, so now I have to play a new class to get a cool skin?[/sarcasm]

Honestly, I see your point, but at the same time Im not really interested in playing other characters besides my thief until 80, its just not for me. I’m slightly disgruntled at the obvious weapon preferences Anet shows. Its kind of depressing that Im done all my armor but now I have to wait until a skin I like comes out for daggers when I can name tons of greatsword skins I like. Ah well. Thats off topic I guess.

We get a book… if you do the scavenger hunt. That’s a neat addition and the flaming book has some very nice stats to it, better than most backs I’ve seen.

But I do agree. I would’ve loved to have something else other than crafting mats for my troubles. It makes me a little sad. I was really hoping for something really neat. Like an armor skin or a weapon skin or whatever. Oh well. Still. Fun event.
