Have seen so many people that have spent ridiculous amounts of gems on keys and gotten nothing.

Just a PSA, they’re buyable from players. They are expensive, yes. Unless you’re absurdly lucky though, it’s going to be a whoooole lot cheaper to get them that way.
Some aren’t even expensive yet.

If you don’t have the on hand coin, even buying gold with gems and buying the item with the gold is going to be cheaper in RL dollars.

Anticipating a whole lot more freaking out about opening chests and people not getting what they wanted, kills me seeing people say “I spent $50 on keys and got nothing!” etc.

And with today’s inflation… I got $20 worth of gems, and converted that to 11 gold With which, I bought exactly the weapon skins I wanted. Poof, done.

Some of the skins are going for 50g. You do the math.

I think the math is in favor of OP. It’s cheaper to buy the one you want than to buy hundreds of keys hoping to get the one you want.

Some people like to gamble, though.

When WoW came along charging subscription fees to play and people accepted that i joked “One of these days, thanks to idiots easily parted with their money, we’ll see games where you have two price lists, one in game gold, one in real money”

I’m not QQ’ing at all. I’m enjoying the event, and will likely gamble a little with keys to toss a bit of money towards ANET to support their development, I have 3gold right now, max toon level is 54, and really like the look of the shield for my engineer. I’ve had to accept that I likely won’t be getting it (not even sure what’s required to craft it yet but the components for a lvl 54 character probably aren’t in line).

The second portion though – is that’s why a lot of cash stores go the direction they go. Many will drop cash to buy an item either because they have the cash to throw away, or simply because the in game route to obtain said item is just not possible for a player to do.

The event is still on for awhile so I’m hoping I can figure out a way to get that shield that fits into my play time/style, but some stuff does seem a little out of reach for some players.

As of right now the chainsaw skin is 49g 50s, either way you’re screwed. Take your chance on keys or spend about $80 on gems for it.

It is sad with the way games are going today, you buy the game and either pay a sub or pay through the nose in the cash shop. I won’t buy map packs for FPS games when they used to be free and I’ll be kitten if I’m paying for this.
