Let me preface this with I think the Halloween event was great.

I am the type that does like to try finishing all achievements. It also bothers me when I can’t finish event achievements (unless the same are available year after year to continue).

I found that I did not have enought time to finish all the achievements this year. While it may be because I am busier more this year than most I still found they had poured quite a bit of stuff for us to do which was fantastic!

My OCD hates Anet, but the fun gamer in me Loved this event =)

granted you cant please averybody and the one time only event eas a 30 second cut scene, still there was a lot of tought put into it and even if the rewards are purely cosmetical or not dropping at a rate that pleases everyone,it has been lots of fun which i think is the bottom line

A good first effort. Not quite as good as some seasonal events in other MMOs however. The rough edges which tainted the event for many (skins from BL chests difficulty of some events etcetera) need to be smoothed out.

I loved the event and bravo to the team that put it together! What I would change is making content like the storyline-book quests all accessable to lower level toons (kind of crappy to start it and then get stalled at the last two higher level zones and then hope I get help – time invested thinking I was going to get to finish now may be wasted unless I get some help in the crypts) and second comment would be to try to schedule over two weekends, not just one. I didn’t get as much playing time in as I wanted and would love to have another week to enjoy the festival. But great work – you guys are leading the pack!

My thought is that I’ve never seen so many complaints about a holiday even in any MMORPG I’ve played in the past 10 years.

Al the content is mind blowingly amazing, well designed, fun, A+++ material, so I it’s really disappointing to see this forum full of complaints considering how good the event is for the most part.

But they decided to copy the Nexon business strategy for events, and they should have known in advance that Nexon is one of the most hated MMO companies in the world. So they brought all the hate upon themselves.

Good things:
-Mad King dungeon
-costumes
-mystic cauldron
-labyrinth
-recovering fast the mad king server issues…..
-but most of all “shiny” plastic spiders u.u

Bad things:
-mad king servers issues
-clock tower -.- graphical issues and norn/charr issues
-everything about both the halloween weapons…..

Overall a nice event but not perfect though….

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

I personally thought it was brilliant, best event that I have ever taken part in over multiple MMO’s.

There was so much content and so many different things to do.

I admit, I see people upset about the items, but Im quite glad with my flaming halloween book on my back.

Also, I guess I was lucky, I couldnt play on the first day however I had access to the forums so I could read about the BLC. However, Didnt stop me buying some keys, I saw the gem buying more as a investment into a gaming company who, lets just say, made a fantastic event.

Didnt stop there either, brought my self a Mad King brawl set.

Also, (I admit I was lucky) managed to get the arachnaphobia bow from the MK Instance.

So all in all,

Amazing event, can’t wait for the next one and I will be buying more gems when it comes round.

EDIT – Forgot to mention the artwork – Just utter amazing.

I was generally unimpressed. There wasn’t enough direction and/or information to guide players as to what was available and where. It was buggy. They didn’t think it through as far as forcing the clock tower puzzle to be grouped, obviously didn’t test it much if at all considering all the bug issues, camera problems, etc. As usual those who exploited the event like the chests got to keep their farmed/exploited gains while everyone suffered with the nerf bat that followed again indicating that didn’t think it through. It didn’t take a gaming genius to know the farming/exploits would happen, or that people would deliberately grief others in the jumping puzzle, etc. The amount of mats needed to make anything actually worthwhile were atrocious. Having players invest purchasing power for temporary costumes rather than permanent ones. The event had tremendous potential. Too bad it was squandered on rushed work, poor and buggy design, and the implementation of a puzzle admittedly deliberately designed to to be failed by the majority of players in what is supposed to be a “holiday” event. As you asked what people think, this is my opinion. I am fully aware other opinions will differ and no one opinion is better or worse than any other as they are indeed, entirely subjective.

Good things:

Clocktower
Costume Brawl overhaul
Witch costume
The Labyrinth
Mad King mini dungeon
Lunatic Inquisition and Reaper’s Rumble
The cutscene of the Mad King appearing
Pumpkin carving, Haunted Doors and memoires quest
Music, art and the decorations of Lion’s Arch
More lore on the Mad King!

Bad things:

Expensive Halloween weapons skin so shortly after game’s release, excludes many players from getting a sweet halloween weapon.
All costumes cost gems.
Chainsaw the Skeleton mini requires buying the mini pack twice. -_-

Loved all the new areas – the Labirynth, the Clock Tower was amazingly fun, the Lion’s Arch decorations look amazing. Reaper’s Rumble is pvp with a fun twist, but sadly I found Lunatic Inquisition rather boring. The mini dungeon was also fun. And for an achievement hoarder like me looking for pumpkins is also a lot of fun.

Overall, I quite enjoyed it.

Memoirs of Madness
I quite enjoyed the scavenger hunt, and like that it gave us some background on MKT and that it used our knowledge of lore to solve the hints. I did have to look up some of the sites(especially ones in zones I’d never been to while leveling), and the reward was nice.

The second set of clues was quite difficult to do on my low-level alt — especially getting to Sparkfly Fen. It was nice that high levels would rez me and clear the way without me even having to ask though.

The Clocktower
I was slightly disappointed with this addition, but that’s mainly because I’m spastic when trying to do jumping puzzles that don’t let you take your time. After ~7-10 attempts, I moved on knowing that I wouldn’t complete it(especially after hearing of people spending 5+ hours trying!). The reward vs. time spent just wouldn’t have worked in my favor…

Rumble/Inquisition
I still haven’t tried Inquisition, but Rumble seemed fun… I’ve never played a MOBA game before so I really had no idea what was going on.

Labyrinth
A fun place to farm. Scary when no one else is around and you get mobbed hehe. I have yet to get a decent reward from the chests, but oh well. The RNG has never been my friend.

Mad King Dungeon
I loved the opening event! Even moreso when I saw it on Youtube and realized that MKT popped up — for me, it was just a smoking hole in the piazza with some spooky laughter.

The actual dungeon is quite fun, though like most bosses, the battle drags on because he has so many HPs rather than any interesting gameplay. Also, I wish he’d stay on the lower level for the last phase of the fight instead of porting up one floor :P The jumps are quite fun, and it’s always a good time to see your teammates splatting on the floor below.

Rewards
This is where I was a little let down. I feel that it’s 90% RNG and 10% pre-existing fortune of gold. Like many unlucky losers, I haven’t gotten any of the new weapon skins. Rarity is good I guess, but I feel effort should be rewarded… not just luck. I hope that in future events, there are more avenues for acquiring the rewards — perhaps trading large amounts of holiday items for them?

Memoirs of Madness
I thought it was a fun way to start the event. I still think that the initial start of the event was well-explained (I know some people weren’t clued-in by the pumpkin icon and specific instructions), but I did have to Google the locations outside of Lion’s Arch.

The Clocktower
Loved all 8 hours of it, and I had a blast sharing the experience with the overflow groups I ran the course with. I believe I finished it at 4AM, convincing myself that I’d have a lot of trouble sleeping that night and doing my midterms the next day if I didn’t get that puzzle out of the way and off of my mind. The sense of relief jumping through the clock face was ridiculous, haha.

Reaper’s Rumble
Didn’t try it for long, I spent those 5 minutes being very confused.

Lunatic Inquisition
I had a blast initially, but I’m soured to it at the moment. The last time I played, my teammate felt it necessary to identify me by name and as an idiot in map chat. I said “No need to name call”, and he said “No need to ruin other people’s fun”. I left, saying that he should take his own advice and that it wasn’t necessary to call me out to the whole map, and left it at that. Digression aside, it’s still a very fun game.

Labyrinth
I leveled up a few times (61 to 66, I think) just running around and farming in here. I enjoy jumping in here when I have nothing else to do, simply for some quick salvage materials and experience.

Mad King Dungeon
I ran it several times after personally witnessing the cutscene, it was great. It’s very accessible to lower-level characters, which I like very much, and I usually added to my “LFG” messages that you don’t have to be level 80. Tended to get a lot of whispers for that. It was also my first dungeon (!) (yes, I did say earlier that I’m almost level 70), and I liked the whole format of the mobs, sequential boss fights, jumping to lower levels, etc. Plus it was a fun moment at the end when we got the initial rewards, went “lolwut”, then discovered that there was a chest a little further down. I’ve gotten a couple exotics from those 7-8 runs.

Overall
I didn’t even cover everything (much less completed the content I missed), and I’m amazed at how BIG this event was. There were so many things to do, and it was accessible to all kinds of players. I hadn’t been playing much before this holiday update, and it totally renewed my interest in getting my main to level 80. I can’t wait for future updates.

Very impressed by how much content there is in this event! I had an absolute blast spending hours and hours trying to get up the clock tower with a friend. She beat it way sooner than I did, but we were laughing and griping and laughing and shaking our fists…it felt really good to finally get it the next day.

I don’t really understand why there’s 4 different scan options for the candy-powered scanner. It didn’t add anything to the experience for me having to cycle through them all every time, at least. It was fun running around trying to guess where the pages would be, we got the first few but soon were being dragged into places we had never explored. So google and advice from high level friends helped a lot.

The mad king dungeon is hilarious, I lost track of the number of times I fell or was tossed off the side to plummet to the ground below.

The PvP events were a fun diversion, quick bit of fun.

Love the devil horns! Hate the random black chest loot (didn’t buy any gamble-keys).

Labyrinth is crazy fun when you latch onto a group of other players and follow along for the ride. It’s also really helping me as I try to get through all the pumpkins and loot bags I need.

Overall, very impressed with how much work went into this! Probably the best seasonal event I’ve ever seen in an MMO.

I think the Halloween event has been brilliant. There was a bit of a rough start, and I think a lot of folks let that ruin the whole event for them, but I really think that it’s turned out incredible. I’ve really enjoyed the events and the activities in the Mad King’s Labyrinth. The boss-fight dungeon is also a lot of fun, and having a fight that spans several different areas of the dungeon is pretty awesome. Despite the complaints that a lot of folks have about the Clock Tower, it does seem to invoke a feeling of chaos, which is sort of what the Mad King is all about. I’ve not finished it yet, myself, but I think it’s fine the way it is (I may complain about the fat Charr and giant Norn characters, but I still love it).

I loved the Halloween events! I have a few friends who were complaining about it, comparing it to GW1’s events, but I’m quite pleased.

I loved the tower once I was able to complete it, however it definitely did waste a lot of my time and prevented me from doing the other events. Yes, that was my own choice. I just wish I was better at it. Hopefully if they add another puzzle like this, I’ll get it completed faster.

The Labyrinth was a lot of fun and it was great for leveling. I completed 9 of my 10 halloween events there, and I went up 4 levels. It only took a total of about 2 hours, so that was great.

The Memoirs of the Mad King was fun and it was the first thing I did for the event. It really eased me into Halloween. I spent six years on GW1 and I never once participated in the holiday events, so I was pretty hesitant to do it this time. I think the book was a really easy way to set it up for me.

Kudos, ANet!

It has a little bit for everyone and the scale is just great. The devils horns are nice and the flaming book is superb. The rest of the rewards are a tad lackluster in a sense that I feel like I have to buy them. I don’t see a problem in being a bit more generous in that regards, people will switch those things out anyways.

That aside, from the music, to all the animations and sound effects, skins, atmosphere … very well done.

Hopefully I’ll be able to finish the event with the things to come.

i’m also loving it.. even the clock tower.. even though i have wasted 6+ hours trying to do it and still have not succeeded >.<

i really want The Lunatic Inquisition, or /some/ version of that game to remain in gw2 even after the halloween season is over. i didn’t get to play it much, but i’d love to get a chance to play at it more!

i think it would be an awesome addition, in the way Keg Brawl is… i think it should be categorised as something like that… instead of lumped in with sPVP.. But that’s just my feeling!

Anyways.. i really enjoyed the event, i was stunned at how much work must have gone into the event. Certainly there were a few hiccups here and there, and a couple missteps Anet might have made in some areas, but overall i think Halloween was excellent in this game.

I dislike it all. Yeah they put a lot of effort into it, but everything is way too confusing. I shouldn’t have to read a full page letter about an event to know what to do. And the letter itself is very cryptic. And I shouldn’t have to check a website to figure things out. That is not fun.

Events seems scattered all over the map, and you have no idea where anything is or when it happens. There is no in-game announcement about it. Its very unorganized. The email they sent out about the last event, they scheduled it right when most Americans are watching football.

None of the events should require grouping at all. And if they do, then people should be able to join in without forming a group.

Personally I’m getting tired of jumping puzzles. This isn’t Mario Brothers, I never have liked that game.

Yes they have added more than most games, but I have had zero desire to do any of it.

I loved it (I’m a bit sad I had to rely on spoilers to get the books because I didn’t understand how to use the scanner to find places for most of it and didn’t feel I had the time to learn and go search for the places).

I like the pvp games too. First time I joined the inquisition game I was randomly made into a cult member at the start which really confused me to no end (I just want to hug the villagers).

Only thing I felt was grindy was the pumpkins (would be fun if you could choose how to carve them instead of just running by and spamming f).

Tower is also great (beginning after tower blows out a bit annoying with lots of norn and charr blah blah blah).

Oh, and I enjoyed soloing the Mad King (I was there at the cinematic and I just jumped right in without realizing it was a group dungeon -_-).

Overall worth the money I spent on keys (and I didn’t get anything but whatever).

I have thoroughly enjoyed the event, from figuring out the books to running around looking for pumpkins to carve.

didn’t really like the pvp game, but then I’m not really that into pvp, I still gave it a good go and helped with the losing of the “team”.

the tower was awesome, had alot of fun not only jumping it, but also the banter in the chat. still run it for fun, and probably will until it disappears.

fighting the mad king was also great, been in there a few times now, and loved the cinematic that played that one time (had to be there for that).

all in all a great experience and can’t wait for the next one, which I’m hoping will be wintersday

My first MMO and my first in-game holiday event, loved it and really enjoyed the brawling fun, hoping they expand on the brawling with lots of new tonics and toys plus costumes in the future.

The clock tower was very frustrating after 2342323 attempts, but the satisfactions and feeling i got when my Charr finally completed it was great and i think the puzzle it’s self was brilliant.

I solo’d the Mad King, and although my rewards were rubbish for the 40+ minutes it took me, overall i enjoyed the Halloween event very much.

My only one complaint, i was kind of hoping and waiting they would lower the price of black lion keys just for this holiday, as i seriously don’t believe they are worth 125/450 gems considering the chance of getting anything useful is very rare.

Still, great job Anet.

Good things:
1.MK dungeon event was very fun and had some great humor to it. Entertaining (no i haven’t gotten a single good drop from it but I still have enjoyed it)

2.Labyrinth is a great place to level and have fun in it and the champs were great too (no I didn’t get in prior to the nerf of drops but it’s still a good place)

3.The book quests were fun and challenging. I enjoyed getting my level 23 to bloodtide but needed some help getting to sparkfly glen. The back item is awesome so kudos to the team that created it.

4.The costumes were fun and funny.

5. At first the candy corn nodes were fun and hilarious but they were way too common eventually.

6. The jumping puzzle is awesome but also problematic so it will be on both lists (if they had made it so each character was shrunk to the same size so that the norn and charr hate wouldn’t have been created then this would have been on one list).

Bad Things:

1. Their non upfront method of selling keys. I hope in the future they are very upfront on these types of promotions as they were very negative to their image as a good company.

2. The jumping puzzle issues of sight when being blocked by huge bodies.

3. The devil horns that are given away are just way way too small. Hardly noticeable on my asurans and charr and through many hairstyles.

The labyrith I think could’ve been a bit more interesting and I didn’t bother with the clock tower or BLCs. Assuming the party isn’t 10 seconds long, I should complete the meta achievement.

I didn’t care for the clock tower, and consider myself lucky that it wasn’t part of the meta. Though, I would not have blamed them if they made it so, and kudos to everyone who was able to do it.

I’m not a big fan of dungeons, so I went inside to get credit for going inside, then died, and left. I did ‘one’ dungeon to finish my story. I doubt I’ll do that again on another character. Just not a fan of dungeons. Other than entering the dungeon, completing it wasn’t part of the meta, so again, I consider myself lucky, and would not have held it against them if they made it part of the meta.

So hopefully I’ll be able to attend the part, and all the other events and such would not have gone to waste. Though I did have a good time.

I didn’t craft anything. Seems like there was always an ingredient that was just too much money or something to make it worth it, so I suppose I’ll throw away all those skulls and fake teeth and candy and such when it’s over.

Somethings are real fun xD, and enjoyable.
But others are just . . . Like the Clockwork Tower.., its just too ridiculously Hard!!
I think it would be easier if it was Single only, because of the amount of players in one puzzle. ( not complaining about any race or something)

Ah my thoughts on this <.< they fluctuate…
I was so excited for this event, and I was not let down! I was totally immersed in the mini story line as well as the events themselves.
I love opening doors and seeing what’s inside.. only for there to be monsters! oh no.. xD
I spent lots of real money and in game money on keys to open those darn mad king chests.. but it was not only a gamble (a harsh gamble!) but I was also having so much fun x.x that it’s ok to me. For myself, fun is the most important thing in games, and I haven’t had this much fun (halloween event or otherwise) in a game since… well since a certain mmo revolving around a flightless yellow bird came out <.<
The clock tower.. is.. what can I say.. a pain haha, but I’m glad they didn’t make it count towards the overall achievement, because that would be downright evil if they did >.>

I did have a major problem with the mad king thorn dungeon.. my two friends and I trio’d him when it first started, then we went in for a second time — got him down to 15% – and that’s when our server crashed. After a mountain of expletives and a good nights sleep that’s not really a big deal anymore v.v but I think that’s the only thing that really got me mad. Ha! Mad…. king thorn. I get it now o.o

Um.. but yes! I loved it. Much more thought put into this one than in other games

I’m a completionist apparently (didn’t know there was a term for it until this event, lul), so that side of me is irked that I can’t seem to complete the Clocktower. But on the other hand, trying and failing at that tower is so freaking fun, I don’t really care that much.

That, and it doesn’t count toward the EotMK title. I’d probably be legitimately annoyed if it did, but ANet was pretty slick with their foresight in that department.

But as for the Halloween events as a whole, I loved them! They were a wonderful break from the usual, I appreciate that. Aaaand they were fun as hell! They were a bit time consuming, but completing everything a decently built event has to offer is guaranteed to be time consuming to some degree. We asked for more end-game content, and ANet answered.

Hoopa doopa.

the event is fine
i think the issues are with the instagrat generation portion of the community who seem to think they’re entitled to the silver platter upon log in.

Halloween was quite fun. I enjoyed most of it.

The only thing I didn’t like was that it was confusing and I had to look up guides to find out what to do.

I hated the clock tower as Iam the kind of person that likes to relax and take my time. And if I have to rush I panic and get stressed and am guaranteed to make mistakes and fail when Iam in a panic. It was also hard to see with all the other people there.

After 20 mins I didn’t bother anymore as it’s not worth the time or hassle. I play for fun, not to get stressed or frustrated.

I loved it. I wasn’t able to do everything, but that’s OK. I was able to do most of it, including some really fun stuff.

The only bummer for me was that there was a level requirement on the Mad Memoirs books because of the areas you had to go through. I was helped by a really kind group of people with the last page of the 1st book and stopped there so I could have fun with the rest of the event.

Hopefully the Mad Memoirs come back next year. I think it could work lore-wise and it was an awesome way to get new players interested in the world and seeing how players work together.

Overall it was better than I expected considering the game is new. EQ2 did better events but not until their 3-4 year of development .

The drop rate on skins was a huge disappointment though. The whole point of Halloween is for everyone to look “halloweeny” so they should of been more common. The materials for crafting them is another slap in the face. Sure I can make my own Halloween skins hopefully by Christmas .

The clock tower was a fiasco. Should of been a solo instance. Asura got screwed.

Also, the Mad Memoir book has the exact same stats as the item I was already wearing. That’s just lazy.

Hm. Not sure I understand why the book stats are lazy – they wanted a backpack that anyone could wear, so they couldn’t make the stats too crazy or people would be screaming about balance issues. It looks really nice, and helps with the Halloween look.

I’m not a huge fan of jumping puzzles, so I didn’t spend a ton of time in the clock tower.

I only tried one segment of the event, having not played for a while. My girlfriend suggested it, we gave it a shot, neither of us had a good time and then she tried a minigame, and continued to not have a good time.

My thoughts overall on the event, as far as I’ve seen: Mad King Thorn is about as interesting to fight as playing catch with yourself via wall and tennis ball, even with just two people fighting him. Mad King Says is mildly amusing. Very mildly.

I’d really rather Anet focus on fixing bugs; still waiting for Deployable Turrets to work, and that’s been broken – seriously, like, only works 25% of the way anywhere that isn’t PvP – since release.

Loved it all, except for the BLC gambling. I didn’t like the “second chance” thing either. I would have been better off saving the boosters I got on the first chance. Apart from that though I thought it was really good.

“meta” this, “meta” that. Please stop saying the word “meta”.

Mad Queen Malafide.7512, can u please stop following me on the forum?! It is my opinion on the event, there is a question in the title, and thats what I think. If u like the event, good for you, but stop acting like some kitten please, neglecting others ppl opinion. Do they pay u for posting, seriously?!

Oh darling I get paid by the bucketloads, and I’m everywhere. I have my private army of minions following each poster personally where ever they go, so I can reply to every single post on this forum! Muhahahaha!

But seriously, you are acting a bit like a Grentch. I’m surprised the light hearted tone of my post was lost on you.

I’ve always loved the holiday events Anet does & this one was no different. My only gripes were the door bugs and that phase 3 seemed a little confusing as to what to do next. Otherwise, I had a blast. Got achievements. Got nothing in my ToT bags which sucks, but hey, that’s RNG for ya. I only wish I coulda seen the Mad King emerge on the 28th.

(I did not mention above the Clocktower…that was on purpose…that thing hates me…)

Eh, just to put in my vote. Since I am not generally shy about my criticism of ANet, I should note that I very much liked the event. In point of fact, it renewed my interest and my hopes that ANet was really going to make this a long term game for me and my friends.
1) Doors randomly appearing in the world that gave a trick (mob) or a treat (bag) – cool.
2) Clock Tower – super cool. (I didnt finish it – kitten you Clock Tower; wait till I upgrade to an Intel i7…)(Yes, that is my excuse and I am sticking to it.)
3) Scavenger Hunt Backpack/Book; Pumpkin Carving Title – both cool and fitting rewards for a Holiday Event
4) Mad King Mini-Dungeon – short, easy, but a fun and fitting part of the story (actually played it with my son a few times and he loved it)(did anyone really expect super loot from a soloable 20min run)
5) The Cut Scene – OK, it was really short (and over-hyped), but it was a fitting introduction to the Dungeon (and pretty neat looking when he pops out in LA now and then)
6) World Visuals (Lions Arch, etc) – well, this is where ANet shines and they did so again.

Overall – in my 10 or so years playing these types of things, I will vote that it was as good as any and better than some. If ANet uses this as a springboard to make other Holidays – maybe FebtoberFest – as good, yeah, I am happy with it.
