Just wanted to note as said in another thread that plenty of us older , working , casual folks (and I be even lots of younger non casuals :P ) , think it’s fine to have rare items in the game that will be few and far between to get or be seen.

Some of us enjoy variety , seeing that person with the extrodinarily good luck with an incredible weapon skin very few have , or those folks with tons of time to farm some item and craft and then get to show off what they earned.

Since early EQ days , I much preferred having actual rare and interesting things in game that not everyone can or will get.

And as many others have noted on here , plenty enjoy the event as it , getting to take it in when they can , and if they can’t not whipping about the gimme gimme gimme tears.

So just wanted to note AN , there are plenty of us “casuals” who think it’s fine as is , don’t think everyone needs everything , and like the Halloween event.

I agree! I bought myself a witch costume and will be buying 5 keys when I get home. if I don’t get a skin, oh well.

Love the event so far. It is even better than the GW1 Halloween!

It’s your , and others problem, if you think you deserve X item, and cannot accept the fact that pleny of folks have no problems with having rare items.

We get it , some of you think everyone should have everything and don’t like rare items , but you can’t seem to grasp that others don’t feel that way , that don’t think AN is forcing anyone to do anything , and think its ok to have rare items.

Casual player here, full time job, etc.

It’s fair to ask someone to work for a reward but I don’t think the level of work required by this event is fair. So, I’m not bothering to go for the rewards.

Fortunately there are events and missions which I can play anyway and still enjoy the holiday. It’s just a shame I’ll have nothing to show for it at the end of the day because the bar was set too high.

So, not angry, not demanding changes, just a bit disappointed that this much of the event was placed outside the realm of possibility. I’m not rewarding that approach with money (to buy gems or keys). Hopefully future events will be a bit more forgiving and fun.

I agree, rare things are great. However, when those rare things are basically “pay money at a chance for a rare thing” it’s not so great. Make them really rare drops or something, just not from the cash shop. That’s the only thing I want. I’ll gladly buy some cosmetic outfits/mini-pets/skins with real money and I will gladly play 50 hours over the next week to try and get some rare item… but I’m not going to toss $100 into the shop for a chance at a rare item.

I don’t think they lied. They did state that there’s a small chance for these special items to drop. People think that if the buy more keys their chance is higher. If the drop rate is 1% and you buy 10 keys the drop rate isn’t suddenly 10%, you just have more opportunities to try. Chests are a gamble. If you don’t like gambling buy one of the outfits.
Besides, if everyone got the cool new skins how special would they really be?

This is game has no subscription. Their income comes from the in-game store. Stop qqing because they encourage you to get COMPLETELY OPTIONAL FLUFF from the store for money.

The thing is that there are players that have spent upwards of $50 and got NOTHING to show for it. A rare is a rare and should stay a rare, however when you take an existing item in game like the Black lion Chest, and promote opening it for a holiday and to receive holiday exclusive items, then the chest needs to have holiday exclusive items. That does NOT mean every chest needs to contain a rare weapon skin, but at least a trick or treat bag or piece of candy….honestly what I think would be win win for both Anet and players that spent a ton of cash would be a solution like this…

BLCs should drop 5-10 Candy Corn (or some other temporary currency) that is only accepted by a special Halloween Vendor NPC that also sells the weapon skins for maybe 200 or 300 hundred Candy Corn Pieces. That way the people that blew major bucks for keys don’t feel like they did it all for nothing and are rewarded with something NEW that they could have ONLY have obtained from opening chests during this special event. Toss in a rare chance to get some of the other Holiday Event items for sale for gems like the costumes, hats, and minis and It would be win win imo. Anet gets the revenue and players get to feel like they are at least working toward their goal of getting their skin each key they use.

Techinally all you “need” in life is something warm, food, and water. So let’s just skip this road because it’s a load of bull and ya know it. I bought a game to have fun. I spend 90% of my time not having fun. I think that’s a problem and I’m going to let them know it. If they want to fix their game so it’s fun for me then cool. Not sure why fanboys act like this. I like how fanboys literally make kitten up. If I wanted everything for free I’d be asking for it for free. I’m asking for them to get rid of stupid kitten like a grind for a halloween weapon. Just put it on the gem store I’ll straight buy it. So what’s that about wanting everything for free again? The problem is ya’ll want people to work like this is an IRL job. I’d rather just straight buy it for a reasonable price. At least that’s honest.

I will generally say that I believe adding stuff to BL Chests exclusively is a terrible idea. Everything else worthwhile you can get via those chests you can also buy directly if at possibly increased cost. However if Skins had been the same they would have had to make them untradeable or run the risk of creating a speculator’s market with people buying skins in bulk and flogging them for a fortune this summer.

In a way, it’s a fair solution. Not the only one, but a fair one.

Otherwise I generally agree with the OP. I work 50, 60 hour weeks at times, but I understand that nothing worth having is ever easily gained. Sure, they could have given everyone a token redeemable for one of the skins. Then everyone would have run around with chainsaw swords for a few weeks. And they’d have vanished when the next cool new thing rolled around. By keeping them rare you keep them special.

I do feel bad for those people who really want one but can’t or won’t gamble on one nor buy one off the TP. But I figure if they really want that skin, they’ll find a way to get it. If not, well, then I guess they didn’t want it after all.

It’s that simple. If everyone had everything, nothing and nobody would be special anymore. Which is why communism is so unappealing to a lot of westerners even though it’s the most humane system conceivable on paper. Not that it can actually work but that is another topic.

I don’t think most people were under the impression that it was truly a 1% chance and that they were simply trying to beat the odds by buying in bulk.

It’s not illegal. I bet most people won’t quit over this. Some people probably did have unrealistic expectations, (they complain about opening 10 chests when others complain about opening 100). None of this means that this was inevitable, handled in the best way possible, or not going to have an affect on future gem sales.

Very few people complaining that I have seen are actually asking for their money back. They simply aren’t pleased with how this all panned out. Is their disappointment really something that should be criticized?

I actually walked out with $260ish…though not slot machines I played craps. Not too bad for my first time I actually made up for my husband’s losses that night. I’d rather have just spent my $60 on that to be honest…at least I’d have had some fun while losing the money.

If you want to go that route I don’t need a Porsche to drive to work. I don’t need surf and turf dinner every night. Things that would be great to have? Yes! Things that I can’t afford? Absolutely!

The point is, much of the enjoyment that comes out of these special items is from their exclusivity and off-chance occurrence. If I ate surf and turf every night I’d probably start to hate it.

ANet didn’t lie, cheat or steal. Anyone who bets on getting something particular from a grab bag is just betting very bad odds. I will generally say that I believe adding stuff to BL Chests exclusively is a terrible idea. Everything else worthwhile you can get via those chests you can also buy directly if at possibly increased cost. However if Skins had been the same they would have had to make them untradeable or run the risk of creating a speculator’s market with people buying skins in bulk and flogging them for a fortune this summer.

In a way, it’s a fair solution. Not the only one, but a fair one.

Otherwise I generally agree with the OP. I work 50, 60 hour weeks at times, but I understand that nothing worth having is ever easily gained. Sure, they could have given everyone a token redeemable for one of the skins. Then everyone would have run around with chainsaw swords for a few weeks. And they’d have vanished when the next cool new thing rolled around. By keeping them rare you keep them special.

I do feel bad for those people who really want one but can’t or won’t gamble on one nor buy one off the TP. But I figure if they really want that skin, they’ll find a way to get it. If not, well, then I guess they didn’t want it after all.

Chests are a gamble not a guarantee. It’d be like going to Las Vegas and raging on your flight home that you didn’t win anything. It’s a choice to use earned funds for a chance at rewards, the player’s choice and theirs alone.

Personally I think it’s a brilliant way to market. The chests needed an element of reward to pep up sales and holidays are what the doctor ordered.

I agree with the OP. I have a full-time job, go to school full-time, have a wife and three kids and only play if everyone else is in bed; I do not think I could be any more “casual.” I played for around 3 hours last night and had an absolute blast. I understand that I probably won’t get a permanent skin this Halloween and am perfectly okay with that. If everyone was running around with a rare item, it wouldn’t be rare. I’m just playing to enjoy the event and hopefully I’ll collect a good portion of Halloween items. I managed to accumulate around 15 personalized ToT bags, 10 Tot bags, 100 Candy Corn and a plastic spider/fang or two. Not a bad haul, in my eyes, for a casual player just playing the event. Only thing I couldn’t figure out was how to get Nougat

I’m probably going to pick up a group of keys from the Black Lion shop and try my luck; but fully understand that I probably won’t get anything. That’s the thing about a small chance of getting something: there’s only a small chance of getting it.

Keep up the great work ArenaNet! Can’t wait to see what is in the remaining three acts!

Running a business doesn’t give you license to be greedy. It’s 100% possible. Plenty of businesses don’t lie or gouge their customers. If people keep accepting it then nothing will change. I’m not sure what your point was here. yes, I bought a game based on false promises. I’m annoyed by that okay. I try to enjoy the game…I find out I really can’t. I barely log in and pretty much have stopped playing. So where is the problem here? It doesn’t take a week to get the weapon/shoulder skins, it takes a large wallet. Why won’t anyone address the fact that it’s not about time and it’s not about “work” and it’s not about making items rare, it’s about money. Those with hundreds of dollars to blow on keys have a chance at a skin (and still aren’t even guaranteed one, let alone the one they want). Those who can’t toss hundreds of dollars are just out of luck. You can’t even earn these in game.

Give me something in game that I can do that takes a full week to earn these skins and I’d be happy. I will gladly “work” for anything in the game, but there isn’t really anything I can do in the game to earn these. I could attempt to farm enough gold to buy gems to get keys… but even if I was earning 1-2 gold an hour I’m not sure I could even come close to what I need to get a skin, let alone multiple skins, before the event ends with the way gem prices are.

The trick or treat bags are a great example of how these skins could have been done better. You can buy trick or treat bags in the shop and it’s a small random chance at getting awesome stuff like recipes, but mostly it’s candy corn. However, I can actually play the game to earn these. Plus, even if I don’t get that recipe I want I get candy corn or something that’s actually part of the halloween event. Make those recipes super rare from the bags, I don’t care. I’ll gladly play hours and hours and hours to try and get them.

The point is, much of the enjoyment that comes out of these special items is from their exclusivity and off-chance occurrence. If I ate surf and turf every night I’d probably start to hate it.

I have NO problem with them putting cool items in the shop like skins that people can buy with cash. Hey good on you if you win one. They need people to spend money somewhere to keep the company up. The content is free the events are free, there is nothing that you need to spend money on. The quests and costume (for costume fights) fights are free. All spending is optional this is in now way ‘gouging’ their customers. This is the real world companies need to make money. Honestly I am extremely happy with the way the update/event is as its not mandatory to buy anything.

I think only a minor part of casual players cares about something is super rare and not everyone has it – but the others will also not post here. However you and also the devs are formed by the past. It is in everyday life that your brain and thinking is formed through learning, experience and in this case through the “old” mmos and “western economy”. So I understand where this kind of thinking comes from, but I dont need to agree, like you do not need too… I guess this is a never ending story and in the end there is no easy solution, but I think it should not take overhand.
I also think the BLC are the biggest design flaw in the hole game. If they sold the skins for even 50 bucks the people would be happy and I guess the money would also be enough.. Right now it just leads to unhappy players. I guess on the long run that will turn out negative. For example I would never buy BLC keys, but maybe a very amazing skin.

Ugh the forums are doing their no qoute again. Over 100k were made last year…alone. That isn’t even counting older models that are still in use. I probably should’ve given actual numbers my bad, but a lot of people can apparently afford that car. Just like how millions could afford million dollar homes…most of Seattle? Guess what living in a million dollar home. If the city said “hey here is a million dollar home” you bet my butt I wouldn’t complain. And again, someone misses the point. It’s not about “oh, why do we have to spend money?” I’ve already bought all the costumes and the mini-pets. I’ll be tossing another $20 in tonight to pick up some more stuff. I’ll gladly give ArenaNet more money for stuff.

The question is “why do I have to use real money to play the in-game lottery?” I’ll buy stuff when I know what I’m getting. I LOVE random loot from in-game items. I don’t like paying real money to spin the wheel for a chance at getting an event item. If I want to gamble with my real money I’ll go to the casino.

And yes, you can buy gems with gold… currently you can get less than 1 gem per silver. If you’re lucky enough to grind out 100 gold or so in the next week you might even be able to get ONE of the 9 BLC skins! Good luck grinding out 100 gold in a week though, especially if you want to be able to actually participate in the fun event stuff.

You realize this same company ran Guild Wars for several years, before they ever even introduced a real cash shop to the game? And even after they did, that they successfully made the game thrive without using cheap tricks like the box gimmick, right? I doubt that suddenly they’re strapped for cash and desperately need to wring our wallets.

In short, that’s a horrible attempt to justify the drop rate. People don’t seem to understand that most of us who are upset do not want to be spoon fed the loot. We want a reasonable chance at it, nothing more. 5% chance for a rare? Reasonable (any rare, doesn’t have to be the one we’re after). 0.5% (roughly the guess at the chance to get anything)? Not reasonable in the least.

20 Chests. That’s 1800 Gems worth of keys.
Compare to the actual 200 you’d need to open to (almost) guarantee a drop. That’s 18000 Gems worth of keys.

I spend 90% of my time not having fun. I think that’s a problem and I’m going to let them know it. If they want to fix their game so it’s fun for me then cool. Not sure why fanboys act like this. If you want to debate points that are BS there are political forums out there.

I’m not sure what your point was here. yes, I bought a game based on false promises. I’m annoyed by that okay. I try to enjoy the game…I find out I really can’t. I barely log in and pretty much have stopped playing. So where is the problem here? I say “hey anet this is the kitten I dislike and why I’ve stopped playing” and apparently this is wrong because why? Exactly where are you in my house to see that I’m upset? Or that I’m whining because apparently saying you dislike something is whiny! Do you have kids? because man oh man you haven’t heard whiny if you think this is it. My youngest is the king of it.

I guess that’s where we diverge. Some people want to everyone to live in Candyland where everyone can satisfy their sweet tooth. Others like to have things that serve as status symbols that show their distinction from the world around them.

What’s the point in having a Porsche if everyone has one? It’s pretty? Won’t it eventually just look ugly and bland in a sea of Porsches?

This thread, and every whiteknight on this forum, is totally missing the point here.

ANET just kitten off the people most likely to give them money. That is bad in every conceivable way from both a business and reputation stand point. This was neither good PR nor good business practices. Its an all around lose lose situation for ANET.

You can whiteknight till you’re blue in the face. It doesn’t change the fact that the people who were most willing to spend money are now highly unlikely to do so ever again. Damaging both ANET’s rep and the prospects for any further events of this nature that they do.

Are you going to care about the Christmas event after losing $50 on the Halloween one? Fark no.
