One time event my a**
Why did they say one time surprise you don’t want to miss? They made it sound very important and over hyped.
I felt annoyed that I’d miss out but then reached a point where I decided who cares it’s only a game.
Iam glad I decided not to get up 3am for this.
I check the net 8am and find out it was just a cut scene. They should of said a 1 time cut scene that way those in other time zones or those working wouldn’t of got so worked up about it.
I don’t care if I miss out on a cut scene. As long as it’s not a 1 time Dynamic event or achievements.
So it was just a cutscene. I am not that much surprised, but I glad I didn’t miss much.
It strikes me that, in world changing events these days, people are often there with
cameras. As they were with the screen caps that are available on youtube. World
changing or no, it seems odd for Anet to spend a boatload of time on a cutscene
(and it was just a cutscene … everything else about it has been repeatable, right?)
and then assure that only a selected percentage of their player base will ever see
it in it’s full glory and in-game resolution.
That’s my two coppers which isn’t worth much I guess. For you all that made it, I
believe it was a very high energy moment. You can always say you were there. For the
rest of us (me, personally, I was out doing storm preparations, a pretty important RL
activity at the moment), I wonder why it would be bad to have an in-game NPC that
would let us watch a “recording” of the event. As if it was a vista, with players in it
and everything.
Cheers.
When people actually say that the cutscene does indeed still play every hour or so, that bothers me. Nothing about it makes any sense that they would market something as being a one-time event when it is still happening.
Was defintely a shock seeing the lion go boom then a huge pumpkin headed guy rise out of the rubble, made my guild mate and i stop talking trash for a few seconds thats for sure then we spent 20 mins trying to form a party to go kick the kings butt only to not be able to get into the instance for another 10 min, after we beat him i missed the chest coz the lag fro all the people playing or trying to enter the instance caused it not to pop for 5 mins and i left thinking the reward was all we got we’re gonna try again tmw though so hopefuly i get some of these epic loots ive heard tell of….though knowing my luck i bet i get junk/stuff i cant use lol.
Here’s a convenient video of that one time event for those who care.
I was disappointed with it because the scene bugged and I didn’t see the Mad King, just the camera swinging around a big hole. My wife happened to be in the room and when it was over she asked what it was all about. I told her I didn’t have the slightest idea. Had to find it on Youtube to see what was actually supposed to happen.
Some kind of actual event would have been nice though. Kill some Mad King minions or something.
mad king destroying lion statue is the one time event.
you can’t watch it again in the game.
How hard wold it of been to let the players beet on his uper half as he through his pumpkin booms around that area of LA. His health hits zero than he gos back in his hole. What it should have been IMO. That said i did enjoy the rush after the video.
With further reflection, the thing I think that really surprises me is the choice made to
1] deliberately create something which clearly has the possibility of stressing server
capacity (which, by golly, it pretty much did) and 2] knowingly do something which
will upset at least a portion of the player community. When you set a time which is
based on the “US Pacific” zone … you know you are excluding some people and you
can absolutely predict you will get some uproar (which, by golly, they did).
Regardless of what’s done or not done about the current comments or complaints,
we can hope it falls into the “lessons learned” category.
i’m looking at the definition of event here and it pretty much matches what happened. There was no specification that it was a dynamic event. The cinematic WAS a one-time, in-game ‘event’. Assuming it’s a dynamic event just because they share the same word is your error. :>
It was one time. No false advertising.
False assumptions were made on your part about what would happen. Next time, assume less and use more sense.
Saying you’re disappointed in the event is one thing. Declaring it false advertising and arguing with people sharing their own opinion is just you being mad and venting on others. People either agree with you, or they don’t, and you won’t change anyone’s mind.
We were told something would happen allowing us to see it if we could. That was the right thing to do. More would be upset to miss it than “to leave a paying job to play a game.”
Also to note, I went on a few hours after the special cut scene was shown and the mad king will occasionally pop out again doing all the cut scene animation for you to watch, without all the fancy camera angles. I think the Halloween Asura person will run around yelling at it too.
You’re absolutely right.. I dont think ANYONE took One-Time event to be One-Time Cutscene.. see how more people would be anticipating an actual event instead of a cutscene. But you probably don’t since One-Time Event and One-Time Cutscene is interchangeable for you.
So people like me did call it more or less…
The cutscene was in realtime like the vistas. So calling it a cutscene is not giving it enough credit. That also explains why for some it didn’t load completely. It sure didn’t for me, still found it impressive enough.
People overhype themselves by adding to the announcement what they think will happen.
Couldn’t get in anyway, login server was screwed, but, after sifting through all the prattle on this thread, by all accounts it was simply a cutscene? A one time event that can be reviewed on youtube? Oh well, must have been nice for those who were there.

it was a short “THIS IS AWESOME” moment that turned into massive frustration when it turned out to be just a small instance instead of epic scale fight like the dragons
the problem was the use of the word “event”. When people use that word, it usually implies a quest of some sort, hence the panic and the hype =/
People need to learn to read better next time, it was clear that there would be no interaction, loot, or any ‘event’ in game terms but an event as in a moment in time you could only watch through a camera instead of personally. The bursting of the statue and camera angles are gone save videos and images. Yes, the Mad King does pop back out once in a while, just like in the cut scene, but the statue is not there to be destroyed. Its there to get people interested in fighting him, to taunt them, to try and get out but be put back into his world where the players have to fight him in a dungeon.
Honestly , i was not WAITING for it , i was just there.
But yeah … it crashed my PC , so i lost the whole thing.
The biggest problem was that because of the announcement so many people were online that time, it caused a massive server overload. And I am a bit surprised Anet was not prepared for that.
(the latter being my only complain about whole of Halloween by the way)
It was not called an event – here is the ArenaNet blurb:
Act 2 of the Guild Wars 2 Halloween event is live – enjoy the festivities! DO NOT MISS Act 3 of Shadow of the Mad King which kicks off at the lion statue in Lion’s Arch at noon Pacific (12:00 PM Pacific Time/19:00 GMT) on Sunday, Oct 28 with a very special, one-time only surprise!
Really disappointing. A boring 30-second cutscene of our glorious king having grown to 20 times his normal size….. I thought it would be a cool one-time only something. Event, costume, item, mini, whatever. This wasn’t even worth my time.
I liked the 1 time event cut scene.
It was nice, hit fraps so quickly for it so guildies who missed could watch. (As did a few others on ventrilo.)
Plus going into the instance, without knowing what to expect was amusing.
Here’s a Quote many might need to hear:
“You can’t always get what you want”
“Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack.” Sun Tzu
If not for bugs after going into that dungeon I think that was a good mini-event. I would like more like that. It’s both amusing and I will not QQ too much when I miss it.
Did they not announce the one-time cutscene and people would miss out there would be a lot of complains.
Did they make playable content available for one time only there would be a lot of complains.
I think they pretty much found a middle ground where a cutscene is the one-time event but people not missing out on playable content when they couldn’t be there. You could say it was overhyped, but that is not only ArenaNets fault. I was not able to do the dungeon myself yet due to all the bugs popping up due to the amount of people online, however I don’t have to miss out as it will be around for a few days.
Overall I am happy with the choices they have made for this one-time event.
I managed to miss it cos I switched character 5 minutes earlier and it didn’t let me in. Than when I was able to get in I saw a bunch of characters with the movie icon above their head. Of course I didn’t see anything.
The real event here was a server crash test, feel proud for participating and crashing or surviving it, for showing devs what their servers can handle
The one-time event turned out to be exactly what I thought it would be. I woke up at a ridiculously early hour (4.30 am) just so I could be there for it.
Was it worth it? In my opinion, yes. It definitely was.
I could have watched it on Youtube afterwards and not missed anything, but what you DON’T get is the building sense of anticipation, the excitement buzzing among the crowd as the hour approaches, and the mad rush of people towards the portal, all eager to be the first to challenge the Mad King himself. That’s an experience you could never, ever get from a simple video recording.
Of course ANet would make it so that anybody could access the dungeon 24/7 after MK’s initial appearance. It would be ridiculous for them to make it otherwise. I’m glad that it’s available for everybody now. All in all, aside from the ugly timing for me and other folks in Asia/Oceania, I think ANet handled this whole situation absolutely beautifully.
They said that being there wouldn’t give you anything. Everyone I spoke to assumed it was going to be the fountain blowing up. The introduction of the mini dungeon was the only surprise.
