I was really disappointed in this. I played GW1 since beta. Always looked forward to any of the holidays, specially Halloween for there costumes. I liked to mix match the costumes and hats to give my character a different look. However today was a very sad day for me. The mad king seemed to play the cruelest joke and I’m not laughing. I think its a bit bogus to spend money for a costume that I can only really wear in town… Yea it says u can wear them but as soon as you go into combat u loose your town clothes. I was really hoping for at least to be able to transmute my current items with the skins but that seemed to be too easy to do arena net. With these type of backwards policies going into place taking out some of the best things that made GW1 I may slip up and start referring Arena net to Trion, or worse SOE. Thanks for killing my fun.

P.S. just because people play rogues doesn’t mean they want to only dress like pirates or in trench coats. There is a real lack of style in armor compared to gw1.

Yeh this game is lacking, they made it cosmetic based but didn’t build a good system, lotro is the best game when it come to cosmetics. They need to play lotro and learn from that game.

The game was only just released, this is just the first event. I’d wait a bit before I call it lacking, personally.

That said I’d have appreciated being able to use the clothes in battle, too, but I bought them knowing they were town clothes, so I’m not bothered, honestly.

I think this is one of the most stupid things I’ve seen so far.

A game about cosmetics, but the cash shop skins can’t be used in combat.

I want to spent my gems so badly on Phantom Hood or even the other 2 costumes, but they’re essentially 100% worthless and useless as I’m not going to blow my gems for a skin to use as I afk in town……

Biggest dissapointment so far, besides the lottery greed chest skins and expensive crafted weapon skins.

i actually kinda like that its town clothes, makes for a quick swap and i can have it with me forever dont have to overwrite gear with transmutes. and i like that its account bound instead of soul bound so i can swap it around chars too. plus it make it very hard to tell what your fighting in wvw if every female light/heavy/medium all wore the witches outfit etc etc.

I agree with the OP – the town skins should be able to be transmuted to armor. That would make them soulbound, so you’d have to reeeaaallly be sure before doing it, but it should be there if you wanna do it.

Yeah I didn’t realize the difference when I bought it, I am still new to the game. It was a huge disappointment. I have been playing for a few weeks now, and I never see anyone running around in their town clothes. I was deciding on purchasing the Med armor set in there. But had not pulled the trigger yet. I saw the new set tonight and didnt waist a second. I even bought the Phantom mask to go along with it. Now I have some really great looking items that cost me quite a bit. But I can only use when I am not adventuring. :/

Honestly, I would REALLY dig having them available for use in Combat. I can understand the thought-process; they don’t want the game to feel too “silly”. Still, these outfits just look absolutely AWESOME, and perfectly fearsome enough to look right at home on the battlefield.

Hopefully, they are a bit more lax in regards to “Town Clothes” in the future, as I think they would be a lot more appealing if you could use them in-combat.

I also wish vanity gear can be worn outside of capital cities. I thought this was the case because if one allowed vanity gear to be worn when killing monsters, it would diminish the cool-ness of armor that requires a lot of effort to obtain.

However, I saw that they now have vanity weapon skins from the Halloween event which look really cool! This nullifies my previous point that vanity isn’t allowed in non-city settings to take away the wow factor of the time/effort it takes to get weapons and gear.

My motivation to get a legendary weapon has decreased because I can cover my weapon as a Halloween theme item and it looks equally as cool in my dark and humble opinion.

Costumes should be unlocked instead bought as units, and wearable in combat, just like in GW1.

Each Town clothes slot should have a checkbox in the lower-right corner. Activate it, and it’ll replace the corresponding armor piece when showing armor.

And once you buy them and unlock them once, an NPC should have them in their list available for you for a small fee.

As they are, it’s not worth paying for them.
It’s already bad not being able to use Rytlock’s miniature because there’s no way to re-create it, although I already suggested the perfect way to solve that.

Cosmetic system in GW2 is generally very lacking, in my opinion.
Especially if compared to either GW1 (which was pretty limited) or to what competitors offer (LotRO stands out and proud).

Playing with cosmetic items in GW2 is disproportionally expensive in both in-game and real currency, because:
- unlike in GW1 or in LotRO, you need to buy a separate costume set for each character you’d like to use it on
-if you want to switch between different costumes (that are not town clothes), you either need to have
o Multiple underlying sets (for stats)
o buy multiple copies of the costume and keep on applying transmutation
- in general, having multiple costumes is in itself punishing because you run out of storage and you need to buy more of it (unlike in GW1 when costumes were “created” and you were not further punished or required to spend more money on storage)

As for Town Clothes, I really dislike the idea. It’s like saying “want to RP? Sure, but RP only out of combat!”.
That’s silly in an MMO that is mnostly combat based. I like the Witch set but really, paying 700 gems for something Iwill be able to display like 5% of my game time? Not likely….

Try to keep the thread going. If you agree and don’t care to leave a message just leave a 1. If we get enough people together maybe they will change it.

As for Town clothes I think it works on paper but the issue is I want to look cool while out adventuring. I don’t care to hang around the old Trammy bank showing off my white wyrm and spitting on the lowbies (old UO Reference) I would rather spend my time out in the land with my comrades killing things and dungeon crawing. I spend like less then 2% of my time in town. I stop at outpost for supplies. Isn’t that what the game was designed to be??

I don’t consider costumes using the town clothes slot as disappointing, I expected it. Where else is it going to go? There is no other option right now.

I would rather see Anet spend the man hours, the time, the money to fix most of the class and weapon bugs that have been documented and reported on. THAT to me should be the priority.

I understand why Anet did the Halloween event… they HAD to… they have a reputation for the best Halloween event in gaming. I am glad they did.

When Anet gets more time maybe they will add multiple “clothes skin slots” to the character options. Maybe add holiday clothes skins to the Collectables area so they can stored and not lost, so they don’t take up vault space.

I like it. I like that all the town clothes are turning into costume brawl kits, including the existing town clothes being retrofitted. It gives them purpose, enhances their ethos as items that are there for messing about in non-combat social areas, and by keeping them out of real combat it means that players don’t find themselves fighting alongside chefs and boxers in ‘serious’ fights.

As for ‘rather seeing them spend their time on fixing bugs,’ they’ve already stated in several places that they have teams for bug fixing and teams for new content. If they don’t move forwards, they’ll fall behind. Sink or swim.

It’s good.

Nah, I don’t buy the whole keeping combat serious thing. First as someone else pointed out they already have weapon skins for chain saws and stuff. Two I used the witches costume and others, dyed and mixed with different helms in gw1 with no problem looking serious. Some costumes are battle ready. Maybe someone wants to roll play as a rockem sockem robot. Letem play they the way they want to. I thought that was the whole point of removing healers from the game and making every class a little more well rounded was to allow people to play the classes they wanted to. If you don’t like fighting beside people with boxing gloves, chef hats and 1980’s police man sunglasses join a guild that is a little more serious. I think if anything it would add a little more individuality to the game. I feel restrained as it is playing a thief and only having three outfits (one i cannot afford) to choose from because all the others are trench coats and pirate suits.

I don’t really mind having some outfits as costumes/town clothes only. That way if they ever want to release truly silly stuff (like, say, a Quaggan costume, lol) it can be for non-combat situations only. And it gives them the opportunity to release “toys” with fun RP abilities, like the broom. However, I personally don’t give a hoot about town clothes, and wish they’d release more armor skins!

The costumes for Halloween look very nice, but I’d have been much happier if they’d have released light-medium-heavy armor skins in the gem shop instead with a spooky touch. Maybe a ragged witchy looking set for light armor, something gothic for the medium armor, and a scary set with skulls for heavy armor.

Hopefully, we will see more armor skins in the future. Nothing against costumes, but I find their use too limited for my purposes and I doubt I’ll ever buy one.

I agree with all of the comments on how ridiculous the cosmetic system is in this game. I have something like 250 fine transmutation stones from BLCs, but that is no the bottleneck as it should be and probably intended (especially considering it is the part that costs gems). No, the bottleneck is the gold and storage space I need to buy a million and one sets of armor with decent stats and other armor with the look I want. For example, I love the vigil armor look but it costs almost 10k gold to buy the look and another 10k gold for the exotic armor to transmute it onto, so if I want it on two different sets (ex magic find and condition damage) I’ll end up spending over 40k gold. And that’s for ONE look. I want some variety too, but don’t want to have to base my look on whether I am farming or not (using magic find gear or not)… meanwhile I’ll never run out of transmutation stones in a million years.

I must be one of the few that have no problem with the Town Clothes system. We already have purchasable combat skins in the Gem Store, the advantage of the Town Clothes is that they can have abilities. I for one am excited for the Witch Outfit (picking it up tonight). The Cauldron will be a great way for people to spontaneously have fun doing a costume brawl at any point in the year! In WoW my wife had the Foam Sword Rack item and it was always good fun dropping that down in a crowded area and watching everyone go at it.

I do like the Witch outfit, and while it would be cool to have a combat armor version of it, I’m still pretty happy with it as Town Clothes.

If your worried about the abilities then I am fine with keeping the broom itself a in town item. As for things like npc/mob costumes I thought that’s what tonics were for.

I just think they needed to keep costumes the same as in GW1 where u can wear them when u want. I mean I’m paying for them. The restriction seems to be a bit ridicules for not only “fluff” but “limited fluff”. It’s bad enough paying real cash for something that doesn’t really exist but to pay that for something you really would never use?

I agree however that some new spooky armor skins would have been nice as well. The biggest problem I find in this whole mess is the hype for transmute stones but when it comes down to it, I find nothing worth transmuting. I mean I made it to lvl 80, 400 leather craft and never used a basic stone because all the gear was trench coats and pirate ruffles. a cloak, robe “HOOD” would be nice. I could even go for some straight black leather skins. I just find trench coats too bulky for a thief. Seems to work great for engineers and rifle men. No good for acrobatics and keeping quiet. The only real thiefy getup they seem to have is the duelist outfit. I guess I was hoping the costumes would give a little change for a bit.

I will just say what others are saying. I was ready to pan out $30 for costumes (my account and the wife’s) but A Net just doesn’t seem interested in my money.

I will say a red moderator’s feedback would be nice to least suggest these post are being made… sigh

I’m also disappointed in how GW2 town clothes work. I preferred GW1, it allowed me to play with Raiment of the Lich Costume on my ranger and made playing the game more enjoyable.

But in GW2, since town clothes are limited to…non-combat situations. I have less of a reason to use them as I’m rarely in towns. So I have no urge to buy them as they will be left in the dark and forgotten about, similiar to minipets.

I originally wanted to support Arenanet by buying costumes in GW2 as that is what I did in GW1 but they just aren’t appealing enough for me to buy them.
