The US has four “times”, as you put it.

I thought they said 12am GMT (1am BST), which is when the dailies seem to reset on every server for me. So I’m assuming that it’s going to update when the dailies normally reset.

If a dev said that it goes live at 12 am US time then he’s obviously wrong as there is no US time.

Also, Facebook only says “later this afternoon” and since the world is on a 24 hour cycle, it will be afternoon SOMEWHERE when it goes live. It’s not false advertisement because the world doesn’t revolve around your timezone.

It’s 12 AM PST – West Coast of the US. So that’s GMT-8.

Also the US has 4 time zones. Just because you’re mad, doesn’t mean you can make ignorant generalizations. We’re a huge country.

ACT 1 of the “Shadow of the Mad King” update will go live late this afternoon (Pacific time), do not expect it until past midnight GMT. ^AT

I would like to just point out Anet promised access to Stress tests for all people who preoreded but were scheduled during the US workday so we didnt get to play. Really, why is this any different? I keep bring these points up, no one seems to want to actually respond. Guess its just to easy to sit their crying rather than discussing.

Just a note to Arenanet: there’s this MMO game company that has a Halloween event, look at their announcement page – it has dates, times and even timezones!

Keep in mind that this is an entire content update not just a Halloween event. Also, with the massive uproar from the community ANet is in the position where they probably want to fix a lot of the pressing issues with this update and make sure is READY before promising exact times. Guild wars itself is an old game so update times for a standard event are probably pretty predictable. Anyways, with that aside, did anyone actually concrete a time for the release?

I think the launch time being ‘unfair’ arguments are ridiculous. The world is a big place not all times are going to suit all people someone is going to have the patch in the middle of the night. Let’s all be thankful we do not live in Asia or Oceania so have nothing going on at practical times!

However, the issue of clear communication is something that should be addressed. Arenanet know they have a global game, they have also known for some time now when Halloween is so their deadline was pretty clear! If you want happy customers you do not give what appears to be solid information and then alter it.

Samrogan your idea that they should not release a time but can release a date so that the patch can be ready suggests it only takes a few hours to finishes tweaks and make sure they are tested and ready to go live, personally I hope they are not working to such close margins!

ArenaNet promised everyone access to the Beta Weekend Events, not to the stress tests. The stress tests were scheduled at a time that suited ArenaNet: they were scheduled at that time to enable ArenaNet staff to tweak and modify the servers as they were being used during the ArenaNet work day not because it suited European players. That was just a happy coincidence that ArenaNet could get a bunch of players during their work hours (for European players, but apparently it annoyed you).

What’s happened here is that they’ve built up a load of anticipation for a patch that they said would be released on the 22nd of October and we find out on the 22nd of October that roughly half the players won’t get it until the 23rd of October.

The obvious solution is to release it earlier in the day (say about 11 am PST) so that most of their players will get to play it on the same day. If they did that then both you and I would be able to play it when we got home from our jobs.

Okay, let’s be honest here: Was I annoyed when I stayed up till midnight PST in hope of the halloween event only for nothing? A bit, I was more amazed at the total lack of information given. Absolutely no one had a solid answer on when it would begin. But really? We’re getting a ton of free content for a game with no subscription fee, with plenty of stuff we won’t have to pay a dime for. Yeah, I feel really bad for the guys that took off work only to find out they wouldn’t get the update until tonight, but it’s not the end of the world.

So it’s a great plan to be releasing it at 5pm, right at probably the highest possible concurrent user time (just before euros log off), and right as the majority of on-site employees head home for the night, right as the customer support lines close…?

Another MMO developer fails to understand the concept of timezones. Seriously Anet, you DO realise that saying “for euroean players” is a little vague, don’t you?

Are we talking 0000 GMT/UTC or 0000 CET?

And why advertise that it will be ready on 22nd when in fact it will only be available to part of the world at that time?

I think everyone who is saying that it’s going to happen at a time that makes it on the 22nd in the US, and the 23rd in Europe is correct. I’m in the US, but using a UK version of Windows. If I go to the GW2 site, it tells says ’Available from 23 October to 5 November" in some places, and lists the 22nd in others.

If I go there from one of my US OS machines, it says “Available from October 22 to November 5” everywhere.

I cant believe how botched this is.They should have said the 23 cause frankly that is when it will be released not the 22 with a couple of hours. That makes EU 24th Lol.
They need clear communication since day 1 and havent shown it except to talk down to gamers.

Welcome to the world of Marketing. You always say the earliest and latest dates possible while still being technically correct. That’s how it works. Not only ANet does this. Almost every company out there does this. And remember, come Wintersday they’ll be doing the exact same thing. So be ready for it when that time of year comes.

I’ll pray for all of you that are getting angered because you couldnt tell that 22nd goes all the way to 11:59 PM… and shocking enough, it is based on PST, where our game is actually based.

Funny way to define ‘botched’ since it was clearly stated in the release that all times given were PST. Pass the popcorn.

I thought it would be obvious that they use their own time zone when announcing worldwide events.

If they release the event at 11:59pm tonight then that is perfectly within what they have stated.

Ahh, I see. I work under a timeline where if something is due on X date it is due open of business hours on that day. So if I have a report due tomorrow it is due at start of business (0800) … not at the end of the day.

I wouldn’t doubt it if people took the day off of work today so that they could play the Halloween events. I’d be kitten if I did that, but my world doesn’t revolve around games.

@Grim, perhaps obvious to anyone within the same time zone / country. But as we know, the world isn’t just the United States.

To the rest of the world, UTC / GMT / Zulu Time is often quoted because it is a constant time standard, unlike “local time” which can fluctuate depending on the time of year. Therefore, using such a standard avoids unnecessary confusion that can arise when quoting a “Local Time”.

This situation being a classic example of the sort of confusion that can occur.
Anet are providing a service across multiple time zones. Therefore, they should stick with a universally recognised constant time standard. Even better would be to quote the start time using multiple time zone standards to help those who cannot calculate the different between their own local time and the constant.

I do hope you know that PM is not AM.
And neither is 24:00.

OMG Agreed! I said that in a separate thread on the same topic. Have some respect people, we are a large country and we have 4 time zones. Personally I live on the East Coast which means my time zone is 3 hours ahead of ArenaNet’s offices. People are getting attitudes with this update – it’s really bringing out the worst. And they say we American’s are self centered, geez!

So currently it’s only 2:20 pm in ArenaNet’s offices. It’s early afternoon. Plenty of time to get the update out.

The entirety of this playerbase doesn’t just reside in the US. Internationally recognised constant time standards exist for a reason.

As for ArenaNet’s details, they didn’t really leave anything out. It’s pretty standard for a gaming company to start events at a time that works for their own time zone since they need to be in the office to finalize it and start things off. It’s common knowledge that ArenaNet is on the West Coast of the US. So let’s start there.

Also, ArenaNet did give details in a clear and standard way. Noted at the bottom of the preview page:

No one can play the event at the moment doesn’t matter what time zone you are in. Or about Internationally recognized treaties or interstellar dimensions. We are all in the same boat.

I agree! None of us can play right now and while it sucks for the Europeans and their time zones to be a day late, there is still confusion in America. So, the best we can do is just sit and wait…although, I guess for Europe it is sleep…^^;

From what I understand the Acts 1-4 that they mentioned are going on for a few days at a time so I don’t think you’ll miss any of the timely stuff. Aside from the Acts, the rest of it will be going on all week.
