I can’t figure out what jewel to put into the Mad memoirs complete edition backpack. I have tried brilliant jewel, embellished and exquisite. None are working.
What should I do? This is the only good backpack I have at the moment because my storyline is bugged at level 76 and I can’t have the one from the story.
Sorry but until ANet fixes this particular item, you can only upgrade it with the lowest grade of gemstone since accessories will only take upgrades that are the same level or less as the respective accessory. Since the Mad Memories books have no level restriction…

I saw someone in game who somehow used a transmorgify to put a gem in their bag, the best one that I could see, making their book a lvl 80 only. I wish I had the screen shot of what they posted in game…..
I did it with a Exquisite Emerald Jewel. You just copy the skin and keep the stats over your level 80 back pack you get from personal story or guild armorer. Copy the jewel you want too and there you go.
For those not bugged like the OP you can transmute it to your level 80 personal story back brace (or whatever it is called) and can thus use a max level gem in it. I did so myself today.
I think they purposely didn’t give it a level so you can use it on any level alt or character you are able to get it with but still have the option to transmute.

Adorned gems (with the filigree) are the ones that can only be used in Jewelry (Rings, Amulet, Accessories). Regular gems can be used in everything.

Incorrect. The backbrace you get from the class story has an exquisite gemstone in it, so back pieces can recieve the super deluxe gems that take filigrees and Ectoplasm to make. It is just that the guild backpacks and the book are bugged and don’t take them.
To put a gem in it. You use a level 80 transumation stone. Put your current backpack and the quest one in.
Transmutation goes like this:
Top Pick the Halloween one to get the graphic.
Middle Pick your old backpack. (The problem is the Halloween one isn’t level 80)
Bottom Pick your gem in your old backpack.
You will still get the special text like I have in my screenshot.

That’s because back items are considered accessories (accessories meaning jewelry in general, not ear pieces), from what I can tell. Likewise, you cannot put a rune in them, so they’re not functioning as armor.
The book is not a bugged item, because you can put in an adorned (copper filigreed pebble) into it. It is working as intended as a level 0 item based on the current game mechanics that items cannot receive upgrade components that are higher level than the item itself.
Whether the reward should be a level 0 item would be a design discussion, but not a bug.
