You don’t NEED the Halloween skins and costumes from the gem store to participate in the slightest, the only thing you need costumes for is the brawl and you can get free ones from climbing in the mystic forge, also the weapon skins are vanity, which again are not required to participate in anything, rare skins are expensive because they are rare, I don’t see the problem here.
… it was obvious gem prices would skyrocket since it’s based on demand. I suspect most people who wanted to buy something converted gold to gems prior to the event. Some did it simply for profit.

You want costly I opened 40+ chests to get a single skin for a 1hs. I was trying to stop myself after the first 20 but figured it was just bad luck a few things have to drop eventually. /facepalm

I’m not denying that, personally I think it was greedy of Anet to make every cool looking skin RNG or hundreds of gold and gems, what I’m arguing about is people saying you can’t participate due to lack of gold or time, buying expensive skins from the gem store or TP is not the same as participation, again there is nothing stopping you from taking part in every Halloween activity.
The RNG is being used to make the items more unique… the other method is extreme price like the t3 cultural. Either method will cause QQ. If by “money grab” you mean that they’ll be taking all that virtual gold to the bank, then I totally agree!
I feel somewhat bad for not having bought anything since launch… I should really make an effort to blow 10 bucks of gems a month or something.

Nothin in the event requires gems in any way, shape or form.
If you want to buy something which is on the cash shop for a limited period of time then that’s a different matter.
But guess what? I want ANet to be able to afford the server hosting. And the server bandwidth. And the power, upgrades, maintenance, support, ongoing development and many more costs which come with running an MMO, especially when there is no subscription fee.
So when they offer items for a limited period which give no gameplay advantage to encourage (not force) people to but gems, they have my full support.

Because if everyone could get them that easily then no one would care about them at all because everyone else has them, rare=want, give them to every player=bank trash. Maybe the skins will be available as a rare drop from the finale event, who knows? It’s only been a day.

How many people are walking around in their town clothes showing off their free devil horns? A very small percentage of the playerbase (and as they are free, the whole playerbase has access to them).
But the stuff that’s hard to get? You can expect whoever has them to have them proudly on display.

The actual content requires no gems – See scavenger hunt/candy corn/costume brawl.
However the costumes DO give you uses in costume brawl (Customized Mad King skills from what it stated), but in reality it will be for like? What a week? So in the end it doesn’t really matter. If it really bothers you. Log in on after the holiday is over and all this mess will be over.
Edit: As for the permanent looks for weapons etc, can’t those be crafted? I haven’t looked as I don’t care too much.
Honestly I think they could make better money if they followed SOE’s Station Cash store. Just sell the skins for a basic price in gems. The way the chests are set up now is closer to the rares in LoN packs. The main thing is people usually only go crazy on them once. If you get bupkis most won’t do it again.
I think if they just upped the drop rate slightly they would see more cash come in. I know buying a full case of LoN packs you would have at least ended up with a bunch of generic loots and 1 or more rares.
I sadly have to say I’m beginning to agree with the OP. I really like this game (which is really saying something being my main is a necro), but the cash grab is getting out of hand fast. What seems to be bothering me most is that Anet seems to be tweaking the game in a way to make more and more money. I recall my 1st week playing I got like 5-6 BL keys just playing the game. I thought this is decent I can get them farming or if I want to save time buy them. Since the first patch I don’t believe I have seen 1 key and I have about 120 BL chests in the bank. The key to a game like this is that players need to feel like most things they can reasonably attain or accomplish by playing as an alternative to saving time and buying. Maybe you can currently…but right now I personally don’t feel this way and I think many other players feel the same way.
Dunno what the fuss is about. I wont recognize any of the armours if I encounter them anyways. Either they will be rendered due to mass population or its cluttered. The only time you’ll really see it is by pressing the ‘H’ key.
well imo, everyone should have equal chance of getting the thing they want in a Halloween even no matter their financial position. i do agree that the company deserves profit as soemwhat of a reward for granting us this event, but the odds of opening BLC is way too low for players to have confidence in buying keys. also imo, it they should have tried to keep the gem prices low for people to buy it with in game money easier as opposed to letting them skyrocket and making these costumes and skin be inaccessible to the poorer population. i am a casual gamer as i only have about 180 hours on the account since release, i have gotten a decent amount of gold to get most of the stuff i want, but for many people who didn’t dedicate their time making money like i did, would not be able to purchase such items. for the issue of being special without everyone having it, Anet could make a hard and long “quest” for players to do and can make the items soul bound/account bound so we are not doing it for profit.

You don’t need skins, but you don’t need events, you don’t need Guild Wars 2. You don’t NEED a computer, or money, or even a house if you have a shelter and a fire and can catch your own food. There is remarkably little in the world anyone needs besides food, water and warmth, but needs don’t necessarily bring happiness.
If people have money, you have the product (Which essentially costs nothing being a digital item), and they would be happy with the item, why not give them the item and they give you the money, it’s a win win.

Now don’t pretend holidays outside games aren’t money-grabbing fests for companies. Heck I’d be surprised if I don’t see christmas stuff in stores before november even starts! All holidays cost money, and Arenanet has put a lot of time/effort and money into making this game. Even though I might not fully agree on some points of making money ‘back’ (the gambling with the chests) it doesn’t really influence gameplay. Besides something shiney the people who spend money don’t gain anything “better” than the players who don’t spend money.
I’m slightly sad about the weapon skins being so rare, but then again. That’s what they’re ‘rare’ for. I’m having plenty of fun participating in food fights, costume brawls, trick or treating and breaking my head over what the locations could be of those ghosts. All in all, I’m having fun, without spending real life money.
